Re: how to save attachments

2018-01-21 Thread Gabe Griffith
Hi,

I generally focus on the attachment and press VO space. This brings up a menu
that you can arrow through. It includes open, open with..., save, save in
downloads, and more. If you click on save attachment it brings up the same save
dialogue you would have in text edit, pages or other applications.

Hope that helps.

Re: the sogga of the bricked iPhone X

2018-01-21 Thread Eileen Scrivani
Sarai,

You bring up an interesting point on the phone. I have been using Face
Recognition and it mostly works for me, but there are enough times when I have
to manually type in my pass code – enough to annoy me. Other than that issue,
I’m happy with the phone. I know that I have to slide one finger up from the
center bottom edge of the screen to let it recognize my image, and when it
doesn’t work correctly I’ve assumed it had to due with not being able to
recognize my image. I think now I get the fact that I have to get my finger
right on that home button before starting the slide up.

Once the phone is unlocked I haven’t had issues with only going a fraction up
the screen to get back to the home screen or pressing the side button (from
certain screens), kor sliding further up to get it switched over to the app
switcher.

I’m going to start paying more attention as to where and what my finger is
landing on and does as I wake and unlock the phone.

Well I finally got Dad’s iPhone back to working. Ran the DFU update again with
the Apple Accessibility folks. We finally got it restored. I have to say, I
hate this phone! I know your supposed to run one finger up the edge to go home
but it only works part of the time fore me. Even dad who is sighted misses the
home button. He says there are too many gestures.

How to Read United States Public Library eBook Titles via the iOS OverDrive App

2018-01-21 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Everyone,

Well, Rebecca, a list member, and I had a nice phone conversation regarding
the Overdrive app today. During the conversation, I provided instructions
on how to search for, and download audio books.

I told her that one cannot read ePub formatted eBook titles in Overdrive,
via VoiceOver. This continues to be the case.

However, a short time after our conversation, she contacted me stating that
she had successfully borrowed and downloaded a Kindle formatted eBook via
Overdrive. I was absolutely surprised and delighted for it never occurred
to me to attempt to borrow a Kindle formatted title.

I then contacted her to discuss the steps necessary to accomplish this. She
provided the broad strokes of the method stating that she wanted to explore
the feature more thoroughly before posting to the list.

I have just confirmed her findings and am delighted to say that Kindle
formatted eBooks work beautifully with VoiceOver, as one would expect since
the titles are displayed from within the iOS Kindle app, itself.

Below my signature, you will find the steps on how to borrow and return
Kindle formatted eBooks via Overdrive. You may use either the web or the
iOS/Android app to actually obtain the titles.

Please note that the steps listed below assume that you know how to use
Overdrive in order to search for, and borrow titles. It also assumes that
you have an Amazon.com account and that you are familiar with the Kindle
and/or the Kindle app media system.

Remember, the purpose of OverDrive is to make available, for free, all of
the books owned by the US Public Library system.

Even though the steps below may seem complicated, they are not. In fact, I
just downloaded two Kindle formatted eBooks in less than 2 minutes after
borrowing them from the library.

Remember, unlike Overdrive audio books, with the eBooks, you will borrow
them via OverDrive and read them on Kindle.

Using my Focus 40 Blue Braille display with my iOS Kindle app, I can confirm
that OverDrive titles are equally as accessible as their commercial
counterparts.

A very special thanks to Rebecca Ilniski for bringing this feature to my
attention.

Mark

How to borrow and deliver Kindle Books

1.
Open your library's digital collection (you can find it using
www.overdrive.com).

2.
Find a Kindle Book to borrow. You can: .Tap or mouse over a title, then
select more to go to the title's details page. The details page lists the
formats available for that title, including Kindle Book (if available).
List of available formats on a title's details page. See instructions above.
Note: Some Kindle Books from your library (including many picture books,
read-alongs, and graphic novels) are not supported on certain Kindle devices
or reading apps. To check if an eBook has Kindle device or app restrictions,
look for a Device restrictions link under "Available formats."
.Run a search or open a collection, then select Kindle Book under the
"Format" filter.
.Use the advanced search and choose Kindle Book in the "All formats"
drop-down menu.

3.
Once you find an available Kindle Book, select Borrow.
If prompted, sign in.
4.
Find the eBook you've borrowed on your Checkouts page (under your Account).
>From there, select Read now with Kindle.

You'll be taken to Amazon's website to complete checkout and send the eBook
to your Kindle device or reading app. If you're already signed into Amazon,
continue to step 5. If you're not signed into Amazon, skip to step 6.

5.
If you're signed into Amazon, choose a device or reading app from the
"Deliver to:" drop-down menu, then select Get library book. The book will be
sent to your Kindle device or reading app.
Get library book button and Deliver to drop-down menu on Amazon's website.
See instructions above.
Note: You must complete this step for the book you borrowed to appear in the
"Your Content and Devices" list in your Amazon account. If the book does not
appear in this list, you won't be able to download it on any device.

6.
If you're not already signed into Amazon, select Get library book. You'll be
prompted to sign in.

After you sign in, choose the device or reading app where you'd like to send
the book you borrowed, then select Continue. The book will be sent to your
Kindle device or reading app.
Amazon's Kindle Book delivery page
Note: You must complete this step for the book you borrowed to appear in the
"Your Content and Devices" list in your Amazon account. If the library book
does not appear in this list, you won't be able to download it on any
device.

Your Kindle eReader must have a Wi-Fi internet connection to download
library Kindle Books from Amazon. If you don't have a Wi-Fi connection,
you'll need to transfer the title via USB.

Once a book is on your Kindle device or reading app, you can open it from
your device or app's home screen and read it just like any other Kindle
Book. For specific help reading on your device (like how to change the font
or save a bookmark), visi

Hi,

I usually go to finder and select the file I want to attach with
command C.
I then go to my email and paste it in. I do this when in the body of
the email I’m sending.

I hope that helps.

Hmm, strange. I’ve confirmed the setting is indeed set to on. I’ll try a few

I wonder though, is there a key command to get the display to advance

Interestingly enough Tidbits had an article on this issue this week. I find it
very useful to subscribe to their list you only get one message a week, and
they cover most of the important news in it.

The important sentence for iPhone X is:

iPhone X, iPhone 8, and iPhone 8 Plus: Press and release the Volume Up button,
press and release the Volume Down button, and then press and hold the Side
button until you see the Connect to iTunes screen. 2 of 2

What to Do If Your iPad Gets Disabled By Too Many Passcode Entries

I gave my mother an iPad for Christmas. She had a Mac in the past, but after it
died, she started using an old netbook running Windows XP that I had left lying
around her house. The Asus 1000HE, dating from the first days of the Obama
administration, was literally wheezing and I didn’t even want to imagine what
security vulnerabilities its copy of the long-abandoned Windows XP had.

The iPad was her first iOS device, and she was thrilled, especially with Touch
ID. But I failed to explain that Touch ID would require her to enter her
passcode every few days. And when we had set up the iPad, she had insisted on
an alphanumeric passcode. So when it prompted her for a passcode, she entered
her Apple ID password. And again. And again.

Until finally, the tablet seized up, displaying this message: “iPad is
disabled; connect to iTunes.”

After I ranted about this situation on Twitter and in our TidBITS Slack team, I
discovered that most techies don’t even know that this is something that
happens, because they don’t forget their passcodes!

Alas, I know this problem all too well because I have a tech-addled toddler who
likes to use the iPad Lock screen as a drum, so he disables his iPad regularly.
And before you ask, no, this feature is not related to the Erase Data feature
in Settings > Touch ID & Passcode that erases the data on your iOS device after
10 incorrect passcode entries. This is a
 built-in security feature that
cannot be disabled.

How many incorrect passcode entries it takes before the iPad locks is up for
debate. Apple’s support document says six. In my testing, that isn’t true. It
took only five tries with random passcodes to disable my iPad for 1 minute.
However, Apple seems to have measures in places to prevent accidental
disabling. I tried as a passcode over 20 times without disabling the iPad.
I then entered 9874 another 20 times with no problems. But after that it took
only three random passcodes, without entering the right passcode to reset the
count, to disable the iPad.

Once you kick off the process, it works like this: the device is disabled for 1
minute. There is no way to bypass it being disabled — you just have to sit in
time out like a naughty child. Once that time is up, you get one chance to get
the passcode correct or your device is disabled for 5 minutes. Get it wrong
again and it’s disabled for 15 minutes! The next failure disables it for
another 15 minutes. After that, 1 hour. Get it wrong one more time, and you
won’t be able to get in directly on the device ever again. Your only solution
at that point is to erase all content and settings and restore from backup.

As I’ve worked on my test devices to replicate this behavior, I’m amazed at how
persistent my mother was in entering the wrong passcode. But I think one of the
design mistakes Apple made here was in not explaining why the iPad is disabled.
The more technically adept will likely figure out what’s happening quickly, but
it’s not necessarily obvious to a less experienced user what’s going on.

A more helpful message would be “iPad is disabled for five minutes for your
security. Please verify that your passcode is correct and try again.” At the
very least, that would ensure that the user had been told explicitly what they
had done wrong.

How I Fixed It -- If your iOS device is disabled, the main way to fix it is to
use iTunes to erase it and restore from backup. So instead of this being a
simple confusion I could clear up over the phone, I had to head to her house
with my MacBook Pro in tow. To add insult to injury, since my MacBook Pro only
has Thunderbolt 3 ports and her iPad only came with a Lightning to USB cable, I
had to dig out an adapter.

(To those who would point out that I could have loaded iTunes on my old
netbook, no, that wouldn’t have worked because the current version of iTunes
requires at least Windows 7.)

I

use it at last. I think learning to use Face ID really helped me do other
things with my I phone.

I am now in a position to sell my I Pal reader as I won't be using that any
more!

If anyone in the UK wants an I Pal reader, let me know.

Kawal.
