Lol Simon. That was good. In all seriousness though, has anyone tried turning
off and on both Siri and dictation? I hear that supposedly any issue you've had
with those two things should clear up after toggling them on and off.

Okay, I have to Admit It, HomePod Is The Best

2018-02-16 Thread M. Taylor
I promise I won't flood the list with these kinds of posts but I have to
admit that I found myself doing something this evening that I haven't done
in over 10 years. I actually sat in my living room, with a hardcopy Braille
novel and enjoyed listening to my music on my HomePod, in front of my
fireplace. The sound was so pleasant that I can actually see myself doing
this on a regular basis.

During the past 10 years I've purchased over 10 Bluetooth speakers and none
have compelled me to just sit and listen and read. In fact, I ended up
giving all of them away but not this time.

Regardless of the lack of AI skills, the sound alone is definitely worth the
400+ dollars I paid for the device.

Okay, no more unsolicited testimonials' from me.

My only regret is that I cannot have all of you, my brothers and sisters,
here, so we can experience these beautiful moments, together.

Sincerely,

Mark

you aren't the only one. even simple sentences have been bolloxed badly. I have
seen changes in pronouns, had entire words appear that I didn't speak and even
had one sentence get badly mangled.
It's gotten so that I have to use a bluetooth keyboard to compose messages,

RE: Getting HomePod to See iCloud Account After Rebooting Phone

2018-02-16 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Simon,

Yes, I have an iPhone 8 Plus.

I do not need to reboot my phone, I choose to reboot it based on my activity
throughout the day.

Strangely enough, today, HomePod detects the device without using the Wi-Fi
on/off method, described in my previous post.

Haven't you got an iPhone 8 or +

That to me sounds extremely odd have you had to reboot your phone prior to the
home pod being added in to the network?

Hello Everyone,

For various reasons, I reboot my iPhone throughout the day, when at home.
After doing this, I find that HomePod cannot access the Personal Request
feature saying that the HomePod needs to be on the same WiFi network at my
iPhone.

The only solution that consistently works to resolve this is to tell Siri, on
my iPhone, is to turn off, then turn on Wifi. This takes less than 2-seconds.

Interesting.

Has anyone else experienced this?

What you guys need to realize is, Apple intended the speaker to be smart in
terms of the spatial awareness capabilities. Meaning it sounds great no matter
where you place it. Yes, I think we all would like Siri to be smarter, but

Simon,

It's a little more complicated than that. I can have two speakers, each
playing the same channel, thus it is not stereo sound. In true stereo sound,
the left and right speakers play different audio and are synchronized to make
things sound like they come out of one, the other or both.

Re: HomePods are staining wooden tables with a white ring, The Verge

2018-02-16 Thread lenron brown
I would rather buy some nice equipment than spend my money on a home
pod. Seriously come on I want a smart speaker not a speaker that
pretends to be smart, and only gives me really good audio.

I don't understand why you would want a mouse pad. I am waiting for the next
generation of Home Pod. I don't want an echo speaker as I like my Apple stuff
although one of these days I might get an ;El Braille although this is just a
aought rather than I want!

UEB and other commands using the Focus new Gen on the I phone.

2018-02-16 Thread Kawal Gucukoglu
 Hello All.

I have been using my new generation Focus 40 for just over a week now.

I have a few questions to ask regarding UEB as I normally write in UEB these
days as I can't remember the Standard English Braille Code although that is
what I grew up with!

Anyway, I have noticed that some of the operations have changed with this new
Focus, as before I could do Chord e for new line. Now this doesn't seem to work
and instead I am pressing dot 8 for a new line.

However, this is not the case when you want to send a message, as new line
sends the message. So how can I do new line which doesn't send the message?

Also if I want to put the at sign in, how would one do this, as I use to do
dot four a for the at sign but that is not the case and so I am just pressing
dot 4. Each time I press dots 2 5 6 it says DD rather than the full stop.

i hope that you David will reply although I am happy for anyone to reply to me.

thank you.

Kawal.

Hey Tim,

That's pretty much what I was afraid of. Adobe doesn't concern itself much

Windows 7 VM under Fusion. I need to switch between applications on both

full screen mode. I have been having trouble with getting dumped out of the VM,

Re: BaumUSA closing today

2018-02-16 Thread Katie Zodrow
Hi Donna.
Yes, I got the same news on the VarioUltra list that Baum USA would be closing
this afternoon. Very sad news for sure. 😞 The VarioUltra has been one of the
best and most reliable braille displays I have ever used. I use it all the time
at work and it's great with my iPhone too. Now I'm wondering what will happen
if this display will still be supported in the future? Guess we'll have to wait
and find out.
Thanks for posting this.

Re: HomePods are staining wooden tables with a white ring, The Verge

2018-02-16 Thread Mary Otten
It seems like entirely too many people are falling for the nonsense in the tech
press which is basically saying that the HomePod is meant to compete with cheap
devices like the echo. It isn’t. It is marketed to people who are in the apple
ecosystem want really good sound and don’t want to screw around with extra
devices etc. I don’t own one. I might get a stereo pair at some point, but not
now. I like the fact that you can get it and try it and if you don’t like it,
take it back. Depending on what Apple eventually does as far as opening it up
to other apps like Spotify, and how the whole airplay thing works out, it could
be a really good set up. I have aging big stereo equipment. So this is an
attractive looking deal for me in the hopefully not too distant future. I would
never consider replacing my good equipment with anything like an Amazon echo.
Just not.

RE: Accessibility of documents composed in illustrator?

2018-02-16 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi Donna,

>From memory illustrator is a vector graphics based application,
In most cases adobe aren't blind friendly but I wondered about OCR over
illustrator?

A pain in the A but worth having a look at.
I also wondered what other formats illustrator can save to as that would give
another option but as it's graphical it's probably not going to be friendly.

Yes. I don’t know why they want to use illustrator. The document is largely
text. But that is the preferred software in this case.

RE: Getting HomePod to See iCloud Account After Rebooting Phone

2018-02-16 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi Mark,

Haven't you got an iPhone 8 or +

That to me sounds extremely odd have you had to reboot your phone prior to the
home pod being added in to the network?

Subject: Getting HomePod to See iCloud Account After Rebooting Phone

Hello Everyone,

For various reasons, I reboot my iPhone throughout the day, when at home.
After doing this, I find that HomePod cannot access the Personal Request
feature saying that the HomePod needs to be on the same WiFi network at my
iPhone.

The only solution that consistently works to resolve this is to tell Siri, on
my iPhone, is to turn off, then turn on Wifi. This takes less than 2-seconds.

Interesting.

Has anyone else experienced this?

Mark

Re: BaumUSA closing today

2018-02-16 Thread Donna Goodin
Eric,

You might hold off on that braille edge. I have used both, and the quality of
the barrio is far superior!!! My understanding is that they are making
arrangements for devices to be supported. They said nothing about what that
would look like, other than it is not expected that people will have to sit
send their devices out of the country. Were are you, I would hold off and see
what support options you might have. Just my two cents.
Cheers,
Donna

Ha! You sound like my husband. He swears that Siri hates him.

This is interesting. I always got very good results from Siri until switching
to the iPhone X. Given that this phone supposedly has better hardware and a
faster processor, it makes no sense that dictation results would worsen. But
that has certainly been my experience.
Eileen, I’m somewhat relieved to hear that you are having a similar experience.
At least that makes it sound like it’s the phone rather than something that I
am doing.

Hello Everyone,

Well, first let me thank you for your replies. I really do enjoy a good
technology discussion.

Second, today I went to my local Apple Store and purchased the space gray
HomePod.

What I found interesting is that, at this location, anyway, they were really
pushing the device. In fact, the sale rep stated several times, "Well, buy it
and if you don't like it, just bring it back." I was a bit surprised at this.

It wasn't just him for as I browsed through the store, many of the sales reps
were talking to people and expressing the same sentiment. In fact, their
somewhat pushy demeanor almost turned me off my purchase but, as I did not have
a digital assistant, I decided to add HomePod to my Apple family of products.

As for the ring residue problem? I purchased a 3-dollar mouse pad to place
under the unit.

I'm looking forward to unboxing HomePod and taking it for a spin, this weekend.

And then how does the fusion drive work then?

Is the data closer to the middle or the edge of a fusion drive?

I think it is the oppisite. THe read/wright speed at the rim is fastest. It
has to be faster at the rim to cover for example 90 degrees of rotation then a
point at the center for the same 90 degrees.

My thinking was that if there are some things for which I want fastestt
read/write speeds it would be from the 2nd partition if it is created closer to
the edge of a platter, assuming a single one in a hard drive.

RE: HomePods are staining wooden tables with a white ring, The Verge

HomePods are staining wooden tables with a white ring By Chaim Gartenberg

Apple's HomePod is a great sounding but ideologically flawed speaker, and it
turns out there's another major problem with the smart speaker aside from its
lack of support for Spotify. Apparently the silicone base of the HomePod can
damage wooden furniture, with multiple outlets (including Wirecutter and Pocket
Lint) reporting that leaving the speaker on top of wooden surfaces can cause a
white ring to form.

Apple has confirmed the issue to Wirecutter, stating that "the marks can
improve over several days after the speaker is removed from the wood surface,"
with the company also recommending that users "try cleaning the surface with
the manufacturer's suggested oiling method" if the white rings don't fade.

Given that HomePods aren't meant to be put on a soft surface (the tweeters fire
down, so putting it on cloth messes with the reflectivity of the sound), it's
not the sort of problem you can solve by just putting down a cloth underneath
it, either.

Congratulations to everyone on their beautiful HomePods and sorry it secretes a
deadly acid that destroys your furniture
https://thewirecutter.com/reviews/apple-homepod/?utm_source=twitter&utm_medi
um=social&utm_campaign=social-promo#homepods-flaws-but-not-dealbreakers-home
pod-vs-echo-vs-google-home-max-vs-sonos-one .

Apple has also updated its official support page for the HomePod, explaining
that "It is not unusual for any speaker with a vibration-dampening silicone
base to leave mild marks when placed on some wooden surfaces." According to the
support page, the marks are apparently caused by "oils diffusing between the
silicone base and the table surface." In addition to the previous stated advice
about hoping the marks go away or cleaning the surface, Apple also said for
customers who are concerned about the issue, "We recommend placing your HomePod
on a different surface."

Update February 14th, 4:00pm: Added additional information about placing the
HomePod on soft surfaces. Updated post to reflect new information from Apple's
official support page for the HomePod.

Hi,

According to the product info page in the App Store, it does not include OCR.
It appears to be a good pdf reader app, but in my experience, if you wish to
have OCR functionality, it will cost more than $10 to $20. PDFPen does include
this, but is around the $100 mark and there are likely others, but I know that
PDFPen is accessible and does the trick. The Mac version is very accessible,
although the iOS version is not as accessible from a VO prospective.

Thoughts on my new Homepod

2018-02-16 Thread christopher hallsworth
Good evening to the list.
Here are my thoughts on the new Homepod I received today after ordering it
directly from the Apple online store yesterday.
I just cannot get over the sound quality. It's amazing! It actually sounds
bigger than what the Homepod really is, a small, cylindrical but heavyweight
speaker, weighing in at 2.5 KG (5.5 pounds). For a music speaker, the features
are great. From what I have seen of Siri, it has done what I asked it too. But
the feature I absolutely love is the ability to remotely control media playback
from not only the iOS device that was used to set up Homepod, but also other
iOS devices connected to the same wi-fi network as the Homepod, and even iTunes
on your Mac and I assume PC, providing all devices are running the latest
update, 11.2.5 or later on iOS, iTunes 12.7.3 or later for Mac and again I
assume PC. I also tried Airplay, and that works like a charm. For me who wanted
it as more of a music speaker rather than something equivalent of an Amazon
Echo, it was worth every penny. Before I sign off, setup was a breeze on my
iPhone 6s running iOS 11.2.5.
I would say if you are on the fence, do it! i don't think you will regret it.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE:
1.
Make certain that VoiceOver is enabled.

2.
Open a tweet containing a URL, @, or # link.

3.
Attempt to activate the link using standard VoiceOver gestures.

I am posting this review as a means of requesting that the Twitter
developers address this problem as soon as possible.

Thank you,

Re: Accessibility of documents composed in illustrator?

2018-02-16 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

Most apps within the Adobe Creative Suite are not very accessible at all.
Adobe uses a ton of custom elements that do not allow VO to hook on to. I have
been on their case about some things, but I don't have a big enough impact on
them. There may have been some improvements lately that I haven't learned of,
but I fairly sure that you'll find them mostly inaccessible.

Getting HomePod to See iCloud Account After Rebooting Phone

2018-02-16 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Everyone,

For various reasons, I reboot my iPhone throughout the day, when at home.
After doing this, I find that HomePod cannot access the Personal Request
feature saying that the HomePod needs to be on the same WiFi network at my
iPhone.

The only solution that consistently works to resolve this is to tell Siri,
on my iPhone, is to turn off, then turn on Wifi. This takes less than
2-seconds.

Interesting.

Has anyone else experienced this?

Mark

Re: I Want to Buy a HomePod But, ...

2018-02-16 Thread Saqib Hussain
Hi. The HomePod doesn’t support multiple timers. You cannot pair it to your
phone either. You can do this with the Amazon Echo. This HomePod has been
rushed into the market and it’s cost Apple around £250 to assemble and they
can’t price it less than what it is right now. I’m happy with my Echos as they
do all the things that the HomePod can’t. I admit Sound is excelent on the
HomePod but that’s about it. Even Siri is dummer than the Siri you have on your
phone and neither can compete with Alexa or Google voice assistant offerings.

I was really considering buying a HOmePod. However, as I am not subscribed

does not have such a port.

Perhaps I'll wait until the next generation model in hopes that they will

 Thoughts?

Re: Has anyone noticed Siri getting exponentially worse?

2018-02-16 Thread Donna Goodin

At least that makes it sound like it’s the phone rather than something that I
am doing.

I find issues with it sometimes. I swear siri hates my voice because,

Re: Has anyone noticed Siri getting exponentially worse?

2018-02-16 Thread Eileen Scrivani
Donna,

Yes, I have found dictation greatly lacking lately. That is on my IPhone 10.
Yesterday, I was dictating a message and after completing it (several
attempts), Siri would not even come back with asking me if I wanted to send it.
I had to find the send button on the screen and tap it.

In the past I have noticed when my phone starts acting quirky there’s a pending
update I have needed to install. I checked that yesterday, but the phone is up
to date.

2018-02-16 Thread John JD Denning
Are use dictation quite a bit. Every day. On my iPhone as I’m doing now, and
out on my HomePod. And I have very, very little problem with it. Sometimes when
Siri fumbles, I know it’s because I did.
I’ve not done any, editing on this message. It’s all straight dictation.

HomePod question

2018-02-16 Thread Donna Goodin
Hi all,

If memory serves, something I read said that the HomePod can't do stereo sound
the way the Sonos speakers can. Does anyone know if that is a hardware or
software limitation? I was thinking about picking up a HomePod this weekend,
but eventually having the ability to have stereo sound would be important to
me, so if it's a hardware issue, I'd probably be better off waiting.
Cheers,

Re: Mark on HomePod

2018-02-16 Thread John JD Denning
Well, congrats on the HomePod. If you’re in the Apple ecosystem as I am, I
think you’ll really like it. In fact that’s probably why they’re urging people
to take it home and give it a try, many more are liking it then not. Are used
to use my AirPods for listening to podcasts while I was working, it was easier
to pause and resume them then it was from my iPhone. But now I’ve been using
the HomePod I love it. I don’t regret my purchase at all. I hope you enjoy.
