Turn your phone into a magic wand and kill time at Disney, CNET
CNET News - Tuesday, July 17, 2018 at 5:00 AM Turn your phone into a magic wand and kill time at Disney - CNET Count on Disney to do the impossible: Make waiting in line more fun. The new Play Disney Parks app takes the least magical part of a theme park -- the dreaded long lines -- and jazzes them up with themed games that can only be played while standing in line for rides. At times, your phone can even become a remote control to activate special effects. I'm not talking about some Pokemon Go-style, augmented-reality gimmick. The app can activate physical things seen in the real world. At Space Mountain, watch rockets fly above your head just before you board your ship. At Peter Pan's Flight, players can make Tinkerbell appear inside a lantern. Players begin with a map of the park. Icons tell you which rides have games or other challenges to unlock. Disney To pull it off, Disney taps into location tracking and Bluetooth beacons (along with a secret blend of other behind-the-scenes tech). The games can even tell where you are in line and how fast you're moving along, adjusting the gameplay through the queue. Yes, games. On your phone. While on vacation. I know what you're thinking: I'm traveling to get away from screens. I don't want to be sucked into an app when I'm with my family. Disney's teams felt the same way. "We work very hard to immerse people in these worlds, and the last thing we want is having guests' noses buried in their device," said Josh Gorin, an executive with Disney's Imagineering team. His creative group collaborated with the digital and technology teams to make something that didn't just keep you busy on a phone -- but also tells a story and engages you with your travel party. At Peter Pan's Flight, players need to share their happy thoughts before finding Tinkerbell's trinkets hidden in line. Disney There's a bit of a family-game-night feel to it all. Everyone in your party shares one phone and passes it around, with people working together to accomplish the missions. And in some, the clues to play are hidden on the walls of the line itself, forcing you to look at the world around you. Disney's Play app, released last month, is free on iOS and Android. It works at the two parks at Disneyland Resort in California and the four parks at Walt Disney World in Florida. Players on each coast will have different experiences. The Tinkerbell special effect is in Disneyland, for example, and the Space Mountain effect is only at Magic Kingdom in Disney World. I had a brief test with the app during a visit to Disney's Hollywood Studios in Florida. I was there to check out the opening of Toy Story Land in June, and I played the games for Toy Story Mania and Slinky Dog Dash. (You can see what it's like in the video above.) Wait times can also change your experience. Since beacon sensors know your place in line, gameplay will scale, so you feel like the narrative is complete, no matter if you waited 20 minutes or (gulp) two hours. "The hope is that no matter how long the wait is, we have enough content to keep you entertained," Gorin said. For now, only a handful of Disney's rides have these special games. But there are layers of other content to keep you busy -- some of which you can play outside of the parks. You can test yourself with trivia, poke around animated maps, and, if you are on iOS, stream theme park music on Apple Music. Expect more to come. Gorin said the team wants to expand into park-wide quests and scavenger hunts. There will also be challenges tied to the upcoming Star Wars-themed land, Galaxy's Edge, opening next year. Daniel Soto, vice president of digital experience at Disney, called the upcoming Star Wars content a "next-level experience." I don't go to Disney parks to stare at my phone, but a hybrid entertainment application like this can be helpful when crowds swell, especially when Star Wars land opens. Annual industry estimates show park attendance on the rise, with last year more than 20 million people visiting the Magic Kingdom and 18 million visitors showing up at Disneyland. Even on vacation, when you want to cut down on screen time, it's easy to be tempted to pull out a phone when you're stuck in line. At least with this app, Disney can get you playing with family and engaging with the parks in new ways, instead of mindlessly scrolling through social media posts. MacOS Mojave shows recent apps in the Dock. Here's how to hide them , CNET
CNET How To - Sunday, July 15, 2018 at 3:07 PM MacOS Mojave shows recent apps in the Dock. Here's how to hide them - CNET In addition to Stacks, Dark Mode, a new screenshot tool and an improved Finder, MacOS Mojave has added a new element to the Dock. It now shows your three most recent apps. This new recent-app section sits between your collections of app icons on the left and the section of the right that shows your open apps. If you've got your Dock set up just so, then you might not want this new recent-apps section crowding your Dock. Hide recent apps in Dock The new recent-apps section is smart enough that it shows only recent apps that aren't already in your Dock. It can be helpful to return quickly to an app you recently closed, but since I have my Dock loaded with all the apps I use with any regularity, it has basically been stuck showing me icons for Pages, Dictionary and Preview. I rarely open Pages, open the Dictionary only by accident and only open Preview by clicking on a screenshot or PDF. Thus, these recent apps sitting day after day in my Dock are not useful to my Mac workflow. Thankfully, you can disable the feature. Here's how: Go to System Preferences > Dock and uncheck the box at the bottom for Show recent applications in Dock. Verizon will no longer activate your old 3G-only phone - CNET
CNET News - Tuesday, July 17, 2018 at 7:50 AM Verizon will no longer activate your old 3G-only phone - CNET Sorry tiny iPhone 4S from seven years ago, you can no longer be activated on Verizon. If you have an old iPhone 4S from 2011 sitting around and want to activate it on Verizon, you're out of luck. Going forward, the carrier will no longer activate phones that only support the 3G cellular communications technology. Instead, new activations will require a 4G-capable phone, like the iPhone 5 from 2012. The reason is that Verizon wants to transition away from the older phones and networks. Here's what a company spokesperson told CNET: "For several years we've been publicly saying that our 3G CDMA network will remain available through the end of 2019. Virtually all traffic on our network is on our 4G LTE network. "To facilitate a smooth transition to 4G LTE capable products and services, we are no longer allowing devices that are not 4G LTE capable with VoLTE to be activated on our network." The US is in the midst of moving to ultra fast 5G cellular networks, expected sometime in 2019 or 2020. In the meantime, and for years afterward, 4G networks will continue to be the standard. But hey, those old 3G phones will work in Cuba. Re: SHIPT Grocery delivery
I find it to be decent, but it can be a bit quirky at times, and things can be improved with every update, then with the next, those improvements are broken, then fixed again depending on what the app developers have decided to “improve,” but it’s a little better than it used to be. The only thing I find to still be off, is selecting a different payment option; you can select one, but I’ve never been able to get it to stay selected without playing around with it a lot and then not knowing what I did in the end to make it stay. > On Jul 17, 2018, at 4:31 PM, 'Marshall Scott' via MacVisionaries > wrote: > > Hi, > Has anyone tried SHIPT grocery delivery service? Can't Use "Free Conference Call" App
Is anyone on this list able to use the “Free Conference Call” app on their Mac? I’ve launched this program - both from the Dock and by way of the FCC web page and all it does is “click at me” when I type in key-strokes. This is likewise the issue on iOS as well. Does anybody have any suggestions?
