Well, Simon, I guess when it comes right down to it, there's nothing
like personalized human assistance--especially if they're paid well
enough so you can get away with being grumpy sometimes!

Frankly, and in all candor, I'm not convinced that the self-service
world we is much of an improvement.I prefer humans to apps for many
things. But, come to think of it, not all things. I guess my screen
reader does a better job of reading my mail.

So, there I go, ambivalent again!

Hi, I know that with the apple AirPort Extreme I can have a guess network. Is
that save enough though? I mean can I get a virus if they get into something
they are not suppose too? I always worry about that. Maybe they are dumb
questions but I guess it don’t hurt to ask since I know there lots of you
that know more than me!! :)

Would I be better off with a VPN or just create a guessnetwork?

Re: Routers

2018-08-22 Thread Jonathan Cohn
Hello,

I don’t pay as much attention to network technology as I used to, but I
remember some words about 6 - 12 months ago that a fix was coming for reducing
the ability for clients of a wireless base station from stealing traffic. My
faint recall was that even if there was no security set for the network, it
would still encrypt traffic between the base station and the client device and
would include protocols to randomize items that might make hacking easier.

There is a new update to the Take control book on Wireless networks that I am
sure lists all the current technology, and if you are being cheep, I expect you
can even find it on bookshare instead of spending the small purchase price.

Sorry, I am being long winded for not giving you much of an answer.
Best wishes,

Jonathan Cohn

Adding another language without VO going nuts

2018-08-22 Thread Krister Ekstrom
Hi all,
I want to add an english keyboard layout to my Mac, but i want it to be below
the Swedish keyboard layout in the layouts table. The reason is that if i only
add the keyboard layout and it goes above the Swedish keyboard layout,
Voiceover starts to speak swenglish, that is some words are in Swedish while
others are in English and i find that very annoying.
Can someone tell me how to do this if it is at all possible?
/Krister

RE: Routers

2018-08-22 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hang on,

So you have family over at the weekend and there is a lot of them using your
network so you wish to have your network blocking them from being able to use it
But still allow them to use wifi in your house?

 That's not vpn
You want to split or segment your network so that your side of things are
secure and not able to be accessed.

Is that correct

If so then a lot of the newer model devices including the apple network access
points / routers have Guest network abilities so that you can setup a guest
network that stops people accessing your main network but still get internet
access.

No extra costs to setup things you don't need.

Hello,

Mark your probably right, since all this is very confusing to me. The only
reason I am trying to run a VPN is because on weekends there is always
family using my wifi and I will feel better if I am secured. I do not know
anyone that can help me with this so will probably have to pay someone.
Although, I am more inclined into buying a Mesh router and like you said have
guess account and have more control over it. Thanks everyone for their
suggestions.

Hi Jonathan,

Are you meaning AD
I've seen a few devices coming out with it and wondered if it had been ratified
already.

I would suggest delaying purchasing new network equipment as my understanding
is that a new 802.11 standard is being finalized. That being said, most of the
press I have read about mesh networks says they are easy to set up and add new
routers to the mesh as space requires with the only major issue being that each
vendor has its own protocol for maintaining the mesh so you get stuck with that
vendor unless you swap out the entire network.

In terms of VPN, you might have an issue of double NATTING, this can prevent
VPN software from working. Generally these days you need to allow your ISP to
allocate your private address space and not attempt to have your Airport router
do this. That could be an issue if your ISP limits the number of active devices
allowed on your account. If you are using smart devices you also might want to
set up a separate LAN at your house that has no real Internet access to reduce
chances of hacking.

Hope this gives you some ideas.

RE: Smart refrigerators

2018-08-22 Thread Simon Fogarty
Actually Janina,

The first one was a trick,

I'm gluten free so I can't drink beer.

 But cyder is an option,
But no it's still not good enough,

I'll have to find myself a small servant person to do everything I don't want
to do.

No. No little robots hanging around performing tasks we use our hands and some
kind of tool to perform.

Yes. If the expiration date is tagged in machine readable form, which is the
idea, then yes. Note that it can only tell you the chicken "use by"
date has passed. You still have to do the tossing yourself.

Yes, I can see this use case being met as well, though I expect this will come
in version 2.0

So, how do you feel about 2 out of 3?
