RE: i need help with formatting my mac

2018-09-30 Thread Simon Fogarty

Hi Wayne,

 To do this you have 2 main options,

Firstly and simplist is ensure you have a network connection either wifi or
wired and then turn the machine off and then hold down the letter R key and
keep holding it for approx. 30 seconds while you turn the machine back on.

Once the machine has been on for approx. 1 minute try turning on vo with vo
keys and f5.

This should have put you in to the recovery console.

This will let you use disk utility on your main installation partition

Second option is to have a USB flash drive with a bootable installer for the OS
on it and start up your machine holding down the option key and then once the
drives show click on your USB flash drive and once the utilitys show up use
disk utility to wipe your machines HD
Oh and of course you will have to start VO up as before.

Hope this helps.

Hi,

I may be wrong but in Disc Utility, in order to reformat a drive it’s the erase
tab you need as there is no dedicated format tab available. So you press the
erase tab and you will have to erase your chosen disc again and only then will
you be given a popup button where you choose the scheme.

RE: i need help with formatting my mac

2018-09-30 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Wayne,

Okay, in my opinion, the best way to perform a completely clean disk
wipe/format and reinstall is to use a USB key installer.

Now I don't know if you have read about such a technique and I will not attempt
to provide a comprehensive description of the method. But, genrally speaking,
you can create a USB install key containing Mojave. Then, with the USB key
inserted into an available USB port on your computer, you can boot to that key
and from there, you can format your internal storage and perform a clean
install of Mojave.

I will provide a link, here, that will give you the steps for creating an
install key.

As for booting to the correct drive from system Startup, assuming that you
cannot log into VoiceOver, you will need some sighted assistance in selecting
the correct drive. However, once that is done, you can enable VoiceOver and
perform the disk format and OS install, independently.

Now I'll tell you that this is not terribly complicated but it is not something
I would recommend for a novice, either.

The link to the steps on how to create an install key is:

http://osxdaily.com/2018/09/26/make-macos-mojave-boot-usb-installer/

Okay, good luck.

Mark

Yes, I assumed that that was what you were doing. You can’t format the drive
you have already booted from so you have to reboot holding down command+r

Re: Mojave VoiceOver and keyboard commander

2018-09-30 Thread Jonathan Cohn
Isn't sandboxing applications wonderful! I read some descriptions on Apple
developer site, and it sounds like in beta 6 and 7 these issues started to
occur. There were some suggestions to save the AppleScript file as a App and
then go into the info.plist to indicate that the application needs access to
other applications. Though perhaps that issue was resolved before the final
release. It sounds in general like the complete automation framework that Apple
has had in place for the entire life of OsX has been restricted and the
framework is fairly vague at how to correct. This Sandboxing has the potential
of limiting the flexibility of OsX automations much as it has always been
with IOS. For Apps that provide shortcuts to hundreds of applications
apparently each application that the shortcut utility wants to work with has to
be separately authorized.

This below sounds interesting:

Not authorized to send Apple events to Mail

I have a simple Swift-based macOS app that creates and executes an Apple Script:

let unreadEmailsScript = """
 tell application "Mail"
  get unread count of inbox
 end tell
 """
if let scriptObject = NSAppleScript(source: unreadEmailsScript) {
  var errorDict: NSDictionary? = nil
  scriptObject.executeAndReturnError()

  if let error = errorDict {
  print(error)
  }
}

I've added the following to my project's entitlements:

com.apple.security.temporary-exception.apple-events

   com.apple.Mail

When I execute this on the latest version (18A389) of Mojave the code prints:

{
NSAppleScriptErrorAppName = Mail;
NSAppleScriptErrorBriefMessage = "Not authorized to send Apple events to
Mail.";
NSAppleScriptErrorMessage = "Not authorized to send Apple events to Mail.";

NSAppleScriptErrorNumber = "-1743";
NSAppleScriptErrorRange = "NSRange: {33, 12}";
}

The system doesn't prompt me for authorization at app launch.

What is the correct way to send Apple Events to Mail via a Swift app under
Mojave?

TIA

In case anyone else runs into this problem... what solved it for me was this
the following. I added

NSAppleEventsUsageDescription
Please give Unread Mail access to Mail via Apple Script.

to my app's plist.

Now, upon first launch, the system prompts the user for permission. If
permission is granted the app's Apple Script works correctly.

Best wishes,

Jonathan Cohn

Re: i need help with formatting my mac

2018-09-30 Thread 'Andrew Lamanche' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

I may be wrong but in Disc Utility, in order to reformat a drive it’s the erase
tab you need as there is no dedicated format tab available. So you press the
erase tab and you will have to erase your chosen disc again and only then will
you be given a popup button where you choose the scheme.

RE: Voiceover freezing in Mojave

2018-09-30 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi Shaun,
Can’t rememner who made initial statement but I ment mine as more of a question
than anything
I startto wonder about these updates in older devices
They must have limitations in what they can run.
No intent to upset.

Hi Simon. I don't know if that comment was directed at me or not but it's cool.
Actually, I don't have that 2010 MacBook anymore. And even if I did, it
wouldn't be able to run Mojave on it anyway, which is good because that thing
would become more of a piece of crap than it already is. My 2017 MacBook Air
runs Mojave perfectly. :)

Shawn,

It’s only started doing this since I updated to Mojave last night. I have to
toggle voiceover off and on, then close and open the screen before it will
start talking again. Just toggling voiceover isn’t enough. I’m using Alex on
a Mac book pro 15 inch 2018 with touch bar.
Thanks for any thoughts.
