Re: A TTS Engine instead of a Human Voice for Reading a Novel? Maybe

2019-04-15 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Mark,

I read ebooks using the Daniel voice all the time. I also listen to Audible
books and sometimes, the Daniel voice does a better job than the human reader.
However, when a good human reader does the job, it’s definitely better.

Cheers,

Anne

Hi Mark,
I have a question about your experience. You describe the tts voice as
your beloved Samantha, suggesting that you spend allot of time with her
as a major part of your listening?
If true, might your personal history with the voice, the inflections the
pronunciations impact your appreciation?

Will let you answer if you are so enclined before making a comment.

Thank you, Mark, it’s very reassuring. I’ve listened to a few podcasts for
earlier versions of Apple watch, and the presenters were talking about holding
down “Friends” button - a rectangular button. But I couldn’t see that button
on the series 4 in the shop, and there was nobody on hand to ask. So your
response is very helpful. Does that mean that the “friends’ button has been
dispensed with?

I’m very excited about my watch coming. I’ve. waited for a number of years to
get one, and now it’s coming.

RE: My Apple watch series 4 is arriving tomorrow

2019-04-15 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi Andrew,

I'm probably late in answering this as others would have said the same thing,

Turning the watch on is very simple,

There are only 2 basic buttons on the watch,

The digital crown that's the winedy thing,
And the power button
Same side of the watch smoothish below the digital crown,

When you get the watch and unwrap it from it's plastic covering hold the watch
up with the digital crown top right and the power button is below it flat
smooth button,

Hold that in for approx. 2 seconds and then let it go,

Wait a few seconds say 10 to be sure and then press the digital crown in to the
watch 3 times quickly
This should start up voiceover,

>From there just follow the prompts from the watch and you should be good to
>go.,

Good luck.

RE: Apple watch series 4 question on cellular

2019-04-15 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi Andrew,

I believe if you get the cellular version then yes you would need to put a sim
or have it connected to your mobile phone plan to get the full benefits out of
it.

The cellular version can let you run the watch with out the phone on you all
the time but does cost in most cases slightly more dependatnt on your providers
charging plans.

Here in Nz we don't even have the cellular versions just the gps as our
providers cant' sort themselves out re charging

So really unless you need to have a watch that can make phone calls directly
from it then just go gps
You can do everything from the watch via the Bluetooth connection with the
phone
F

Good luck and hope you find the watch great which ever version you get.

Subject: Apple watch series 4 question on cellular

Hi,

As for Apple watch series 4, I am a little confused. I’m interested in the 44
MM watch but I’m not quite clear what they mean by cellular & GPS. Does it
mean it will cost me more to run on top of the monthly payment for my iPhone
because it uses cellular? Or is the use of Apple watch series 4 cellular
somehow incorporated into the SIM plan I have for my iPhone? I’ve been
searching for an answer on Apple’s website but it’s not clear on that point at
all, which is very annoying because I don’t know which Apple watch series 4 to
go for. I really want the sport type but with a larger display hoping it might
be easier to perform gestures on it or use onscreen keyboard. Any comments,
please?

Andrew

A TTS Engine instead of a Human Voice for Reading a Novel? Maybe

2019-04-15 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Everyone,

I love the iOS Kindle App because it works so well with my Focus 40 Blue
Braille display.

However, for whatever reason, until recently, I've never used the VoiceOver
Samantha TTS engine to read an entire novel in the Kindle app.

Not long ago, I was searching for a book in Audible, because it is not
available on BARD or on Over Drive, and found it. The price of the audio
book was $19, $17 in Apple books. Since the audio length of the book was
just over 5 hours, I decided to see if a Kindle edition was available. Yes,
it was and for a mere $1.99. So, I purchased the Kindle version and used my
beloved Samantha TTS engine to read the novel.

After I finished the Kindle version, a friend of mine purchased the audible
version. So, I decided to give it a quick listen to see if I would like the
book any better or less with a human narrator at the proverbial helm.

You know what? I discovered that I actually preferred the Kindle version
wit the TTS engine, better. The funny thing is, I am absolutely certain
that I would have thoroughly enjoyed the human narrator edition had I not
experienced the TTS engine rendition, first.

Now I'm certainly not saying that a TTS engine is better than a human
narrator but I am saying, that for me, at least, a TTS engine is definitely
a viable option for reading novels, especially when it comes to saving a few
dollars.

RE: Dropbox Changes

Hi Donna,
Didn't think of that.

Cheers for the heads up.

I thought iCloud drive was more like that.

Simon,

iCloud is basically just a folder. You can organize it however you want. So
you could have a folder for books one for music, etc.
Best,
Donna

RE: My Apple watch series 4 is arriving tomorrow

2019-04-15 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Andrew,

OopS!!!

Please disregard my previous post to this thread.

I gave you the wrong instructions.

Okay, to turn VoiceOver on and off, you do, in fact, press the digital crown 3
times.

However, to power on the watch, you press the long side button for about 5
seconds.

Andrew, I am so sorry for any confusion I may have caused you.

I use the digital crown so offen that I focused on it, instead of the correct
steps.

So, when you get your watch, you will feel a long, rectangular button, just
below the digital crown. That is the side button and the one you will use to
both power on and power off the watch.

Mark

Thank you, Mark, it’s very reassuring. I’ve listened to a few podcasts for
earlier versions of Apple watch, and the presenters were talking about holding
down “Friends” button - a rectangular button. But I couldn’t see that button
on the series 4 in the shop, and there was nobody on hand to ask. So your
response is very helpful. Does that mean that the “friends’ button has been
dispensed with?

I’m very excited about my watch coming. I’ve. waited for a number of years to
get one, and now it’s coming.

Hi. The rectangular button is now the side button. At least on my Series 4 that
button is right next to the digital crown.

RE: My Apple watch series 4 is arriving tomorrow

2019-04-15 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Andrew,

Do not be nervous with regard to how to power on your Apple Watch.

The watch is powered on by simply pressing the Digital Crown or what would be
considered the stem on a regular Braille watch.

Just press and hold the stem in, for about 5 seconds and the watch will power
on.

I cannot remember if VoiceOver starts up at the power on but if you do not hear
anything after about a minute or so, press the stem/digital crown 3 times to
enable VoiceOver.

Please let us know how it goes.

Mark

Hi Listers,

In advance of my Apple watch series 4 arriving tomorrow, I’ve listened to a
number of podcasts on how to set it up. One thing I’m not clear is how to turn
it on & off. Please give me a tip what to look for on the watch to start it.
I’m feeling terribly nervous.

Many thanks

Andrew

Re: Apple watch series 4 question on cellular

2019-04-15 Thread Georgina Joyce
Hello,

Cellular means that it will take a SIM card. Some providers offer a second SIM
to work on the same number as your phone and yes they charge extra for that.
You could get a SIM with another number and that will cost too. As someone else
as already suggested ask your provider what they offer for a cellular smart
watch.

The advantage is that you can leave your phone at home and receive and make
calls from the watch. But it is limited because using cellular eats up the
battery.

The GPS version means that to receive and make calls you need to have your
phone close to the watch.

I have only used an Android watch but found it harder to talk to my wrist than
getting my phone out of my pocket / hand-bag. Although, I know that the Apple
Watch experience will be a lot better than the Android experience. Especially
as far as volume.

Any comments,
please?

Andrew

Re: Dropbox Changes

2019-04-15 Thread 'Shawn Krasniuk' via MacVisionaries
I understand that. While things most certainly shouldn't be entirely free, I do
say there should be more pricing plans. When you're on a fixed income and
you're paying for other services, $10 a month is a pretty steap price. Not only
that, but I certainly do not need a terabyte of storage. If they had a similar
pricing structure like iCloud, I would consider paying for them. But
unfortunately, that's not the case. This is why I'm trying to figure out this
PCloud thing and while Jessica's suggestion is ok for others, I don't want the
app on my phone. I work on my Mac most of the time. So I'm asking this again,
what do I have to do to be able to share files? It's not showing up in the
share menu.

2019-04-15 Thread Petrus Tuerlings
See, now I find that interesting. I can’t really complain about download
speeds. I noticed comments on different lists stating how long the IOS 12.2
and the latest Mac OS took to download and install. But honestly, it only took
about 10 or 15 minutes on the iPhone to download and install. The Mac took
about the same time. I used to get very slow uploads when using Dropbox, b but
haven’t tried it for a couple of years now.

Hello, a point of clarification here. The restriction on devices is
for quote free accounts only. Those of us who have paid for dropbox are
not affected in any way shape or form. So while this thread goes on, and
on. Remember the state quote discussion about free services if you want
free you get nothing. There is no such thing as a free lunch ever! If
you want service, unfortunately you must pay for the service. I know I
may sound harsh and nasty but that’s the answer I got dropbox. They
will try to address the concerns about things such as blindness specific
applications that link to their service. In the next release. But that
fixable only be for paid customers. I think all the other services will
adopt similar policies to dropbox. Unfortunately this is a capitalist
system. I think I’ve said enough on this one. Please do not send me
flaming emails they won’t be read they will just simply be deleted.
For the record, I don’t work for nor do I have any financial
relationship with dropbox other than what a normal customer would have.

I think the fastest way to do this, is to have the app on your phone as well,
then from there, you just select what you want, locate the share button next to
the item you want to share, then select how you want to share it.

Hi Phil,

there’s no way to importeml files on your iPhone into Mail.

You could either import them on a Mac using Mail and importing them via IMAP or
use eml viewer to open eml files from your Dropbox on iPhone:

https://itunes.apple.com/de/app/eml-viewer/id1232389519?mt=8

This is a link from the german app store. Don’t knwo if that works. But just
look for eml viewer and you should find it easily.

All the best

2019-04-15 Thread 'Donna Goodin' via MacVisionaries
Simon,

iCloud is basically just a folder. You can organize it however you want. So
you could have a folder for books one for music, etc.
Best,
Donna

RE: Not All Apple Stores are Created Equally (Smile)

2019-04-15 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi Mark,

Glad to hear you had a great experience.

I'd love to know 2 things,

Firstly if you ever come to newzealand will you find an apple store to shop in?

And secondly, what's an apple store?

Subject: Not All Apple Stores are Created Equally (Smile)

Hello Everyone,

I just returned from a short vacation to Hawaii.

While there, I discovered that there is an Apple Store located in the beautiful
Royal Hawaiian Hotel and Resort down at Waikiki Beach.

Wow! To say that the customer service was world class would be the
understatement of the highest degree.

Now I've never been to any of Apple's flagship stores, here on the mainland,
but I'll bet, beans to bacon, that the Royal Hawaiian location mirrors them,
precisely, in terms of enthusiasm, class, and that ineffable quality that sets
Apple apart from other tech companies.

As for the Apple representatives? Well, they were the most attentive and
gracious employees I've yet to encounter at any Apple Store. In fact, I was so
impressed that I actually visited the store twice, just to see if my initial
impression was accurate; and yes, it was, indeed.

Now when I travel, I like to purchase products from significant store
locations. For example, I have purchased items from the first Starbucks store,
the first Nordstrom store, Amazon Go, etc.

So of course I had to buy something from the Royal Hawaiian Apple Store
because I may never get that way, again. The problem is that I couldn't think
of anything I needed, (smile).

In the end, I decided to buy a secondary iPad charger for my new iPad Pro.
I am using it to more rapidly charge my beloved iPHone 8 Plus.

While all of my local Apple stores are great places to explore the world of
Apple, I can definitely say that the Royal Hawaiian location is a cut above and
has forever changed my idea of what world class customer service looks and
feels like.

I loved Hawaii but, as the saying goes, there's no place like home.

Aloha,

Mark

RE: Dropbox Changes

2019-04-15 Thread Simon Fogarty
In iCloud can you set it to save different media types to different folders etc?

I've got a lot of music and audio books but next to no photos

I would imagine that storage is good regardless of which platform since
iCloud Drive uses shared folders,

Do not unlink any devices and you are safe. Dropbox is on 5 devices here.
The limit is 3 but unless I unlink any of them its good.

RE: Exercise & Apple watch

2019-04-15 Thread Simon Fogarty
I've never been able to get my watch to do distance.
Time hr have been all I really get from it which is why I use a distance &
cadence monitor with external heart rate monitor and my iPod.

Hi Andrew,

I use my watch to work out on an elliptical machine. It shows me calories,
length of time, and heart-rate, so yes, you can use the watch for that. When I
use the watch for an indoor walk or run, it does show me distance, too, so I
would think it would do the same for a stationary bike, though I'm not sure how
it would measure it. Try starting a work-out, and choosing in-door cycling,
and see what happens.
Cheers,
Donna

RE: Exercise & Apple watch

2019-04-15 Thread Simon Fogarty
Yes I used my watch for similar things however I always questioned the results
as they differed to that of my cadence and heart rate meters which I peared
through my iPod touch on my bike.

I used an app called wahoo fitness which worked with a number of different
devices

Hi,

I have started working out on a stationary bike. I was wondering if Apple
watch could help me know while exercising the various parameters sighted people
can see on the display in front of them, i.e. heart rate, distance, speed,
calories burnt etc. Do people on the list having Apple watch find it useful in
this regard? I’d appreciate your experience.

Andrew

Re: Not All Apple Stores are Created Equally (Smile)

2019-04-15 Thread Charlie Doremus
Mark,

As someone who has lived in Hawaii for 20 years and, for a time, three blocks
from the Royal Hawaiian Apple store you speak of I must first wholeheartedly
agree with your impression of the store. Many good times spent purchasing
products and learning to use said products. As a matter of correction the store
is not part of the Royal Hawaiian Hotel it is in fact a stand along located in
the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center not far from The Cheesecake Factory.

I have sent you kind words to a friend who works there.

Aloha,

Charlie
