Re: Buying a macbook Air - the latest

2019-05-08 Thread B G
Yes, running VM would be nice but it's not part of my use cases for
this machine. I will try it and see what happens. Will be reporting
my findings here.
What kind of files software did you have in mind for which you believe
256GB might not be sufficient?
as for a case I have asked a friend - an Apple fanatic - to lend me a
hand to pick a good one on Amazon. He's emailed me a couple of links.
I actually wanted one with the Apple logo on it; tells you how much of
a showoff I am I suppose. *grin*

Now, can you tell me a bit more about this Magic keyboard please? What
makes it so special for VO users?
Thanks
Ben

Re: Windows 10 Releaces to install on my mac mini

2019-05-08 Thread 'Danny Keys' via MacVisionaries
Hello,Thanks for that.
Here’s one of the problems I had with my MBP 2014 year machine. I had windows
installed and everything was going just fine. Then I decided to uninstall it
after a few weeks. Then a few weeks later, probably in February this year, I
reinstalled windows 10 on that machine again. Then after a whole bunch of
updates, and after I was done with windows at that point, I attempted to
uninstall it. But for some reason, I was unable to uninstall it. Not only would
boot camp not uninstall it, I had to reformat the SSD and reinstall the Mac os.
So, I’m wanting to avoide these kinds of problems. That is why I asked about
the next installable release of windows.
Later.

RE: Windows 10 Releaces to install on my mac mini

2019-05-08 Thread Simon Fogarty
It's not yet out,

But yes there is an issue in boot camp installing win 10 1809 as you said,

However the known solution is to install windows 10 1803 which works very well
and is fully accessible during installation
And then once you have that installed you can update to 1809 with out issue and
still with full accessibility

I've been able to set this up 5 times this year on different machines without
assistance.
Hope this helps.

Hi list,
Here’s another question regarding installing windows 10 on my new mac mini OS X
14.4.
I know there were some problems with installing the October 2018 release of
windows 10. I also know that the April 2018 release of windows worked ok for
installing on the mac.
Here’s my question.
When will this year’s April release be available for mac users to download and
install?
TIA.

As for keyboard, you can't go passed the apple magic keyboards Bluetooth

Hi,
The latest is a MacBook Air 2018 with 16GB ram, 256GB ssd. I'm going to assume
it will be powerful enough for my xcode (programming) needs.
Judging from the responses it'll also be fine for running VM and Windows 10.
Can the list think of anything else I should be mindful of? What about the type
of carry case or sleeve the list favours, external keyboard, trackpad, etc.
any last minute advice would be gratefully received.
Thank you

Re: sd cards

2019-05-08 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

Use Disk Utility. Depending on how you're going to use the SD card will
determine the format options. You can choose to format it MacOS or MSDOS. If
all you're going to use it is with your Mac, then MacOS will do just fine.

Re: Magic keyboard for mac

2019-05-08 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

That's great to hear. Yes, connecting it is quite simple. Normally, all you
need to do is plug the USB charging cord into the keyboard and the Mac and the
Bluetooth connection is automatically made.

Glad you are pleased thus far.

Windows 10 Releaces to install on my mac mini

2019-05-08 Thread 'Danny Keys' via MacVisionaries
Hi list,
Here’s another question regarding installing windows 10 on my new mac mini OS X
14.4.
I know there were some problems with installing the October 2018 release of
windows 10. I also know that the April 2018 release of windows worked ok for
installing on the mac.
Here’s my question.
When will this year’s April release be available for mac users to download and
install?
TIA.

Dan

Re: Buying a macbook Air - the latest

2019-05-08 Thread Georgina Joyce
Hello,

I use a plastic shell cover that is in 2 parts, simply clipping on the top and
bottom of the Air. I use a clear cover and I have my name on a card underneath
it, so should I let it out of my sight others know that it is mine. These cases
are cheap and can get scratched. Taking it out of my bag to put on a table I’ve
knocked it etc. I simply unclip the case top and bottom off and put a new one
in it’s place. The brushed alluvium is as new. So for 6 years £11 worth of
cases has kept my Air in good condition.

I don’t know if I have purchased from this seller and have no connection to
them. But just as an example, here is an example of the type of case I use:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Plastic-Hard-Shell-Case-Cover-for-Apple-MacBook-Air-11-with-Keyboard-Skin-Clear/233181381968?hash=item364ab18550:g:UbUAAOSwBRlcnMZn

Good luck and enjoy.

Hi Anne,

yeah, the Acadians have a unique version of French. Overall, the regional
french speaking Canadians often have negative feelings towards other regional
speakers. The Quebecois claim that they can't understand Acadian French or
Western Canadian French, even though they all evolved from the same roots. I
appreciate your wording as "interesting" as opposed to less understanding
adjectives.

I think this means that all songs downloaded from the iTunes Store will have
the M4A format, whatever your import settings may be.
My converted purchased albums play fine from the USB key I put them on.

Re: Exporting Albums from iTunes

2019-05-08 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello E.T.,

You don’t need to go through all that burning a CD stuff.
In iTunes, open the preferences and click the Import settings button and select
MP3 from the menu. Click the OK button and another OK button and you’ll be out
of Preferences.
you can now select all the tracks on the album and go to the File menu. Go down
to Convert and you’ll find MP3 as an option.
After the conversion, you’ll have two of each track.
Go to the Finder and open your iTunes library.
Find the album and sort the folder according to Type. All your MP3 versions
will be together. Select them all and copy them. Create a new folder somewhere
else such as in Documents and paste them there.
You’ll need to delete the unwanted versions from within iTunes or iTunes will
get very upset!
I did this very recently with purchased music.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: Does a mac Mini have to be plugged into a display at all times?

2019-05-08 Thread Mike Arrigo
Older mac minis did require a monitor connection, or you could use an
adapter called the fit headless which emulates a monitor. This is no
longer required however.

Original message:

Hi,
Something else I read a while ago, that for a Mac mini to work well or
to work at all it had to be plugged into a monitor which is rather
superfluous for most VO users. I seem to remember also reading about
a sort of adaptor, a dongle, which could be used instead of a monitor.
Anyway, over to the list.

Re: Thinking of Downgrading Back to iPhone 8 Because of Lack of Touch ID - Finding Face ID not as Efficient and Slower

2019-05-08 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

A couple of things to consider:

1. Like with a finger-print iPhone, if the iPhone is off, it will require your
pass-code.
2. Know that as soon as you wake the iPhone, it will start searching for your
face. Consider this for the next item.
3. Make sure that Raise to Wake is turned off. This is in Settings, Display &
Brightness. Disable it as it can cause the iPhone to start searching before
you're ready.
4. As you note during the Face ID setup, the iPhone is looking at your face
from multiple angles. Thus a perfect alignment is not necessarily needed.
Make sure though that the face of the iPhone is pointed towards your face, and
that it is a foot or more away when you hit the side button. As soon as the
side button is pressed, the iPhone will begin searching for your face to
authenticate. If you get the double-haptic vibration, it has accepted your
face and you're ready to go. If you get the triple or quadruple haptic
vibration, then it failed. In that case, press the side button, wait a second
then press the side button again to let it try once more.
5. If there is a notification on the screen, like an iMessage, you can
authenticate with Face ID, then simply double-tap on the notification to go
stragiht to Messages without the need to do the swipe up from bottom to unlock
gesture.

HTH.

Re: Buying a macbook Air - the latest

2019-05-08 Thread 'Jason White' via MacVisionaries
I would suggest buying the machine first, then deciding whether you want an
external keyboard or other devices once you've spent some time with it.

If you're coming from a Microsoft Windows background, Mac OS may take a while
to become a comfortable working environment. In my case, I wasn't coming from a
Windows background, but rather from a mixture of Linux and iOS experience, as
well as other operating systems before those - so I was able to become
reasonably competent with the Mac user interface fairly quickly. If you know
any version of UNIX or Linux, the Mac OS terminal environment will be fairly
familiar.

Hi Mark,

Again another interesting article.

Thanks for this and it also answer the question of auto switching between
devices
I can't get auto switching to work but the control panel and select works great,

That will make life easier although stil not what I would hope for.

Tips, tricks, and customizations for your new AirPods

Here's how to get the most out of your AirPods -new or old -with AppleInsider's
extensive list of tips, tricks, and customizations.

Second generation AirPods
AirPods basics
Getting the basic use out of the way first. The setup process for AirPods is
legendary. Open the case near your iPhone/iPad and it walks you through the
steps. That action also is how you can check the battery life of your AirPods.

Open the case and your battery life will appear on screen. It will show your
AirPods case as well as your AirPods.

AirPods battery status
If you remove one of the AirPods from the case, the on-screen card will then
show you the individual battery life of each AirPod. A small charging indicator
will let you know which, if either, of the two are charging so you know if they
are receiving power.
Something few know is that you can use one AirPod at a time - not just both.
This is handy if you want to hear what is going on around you but still want to
have your headphones on. As AirPods have no way to let in outside audio, this
can be good practice in something like an office environment.

Making them your own
You can easily customize your AirPods by heading into the Settings app.
First, make sure your AirPods are connected and say as much in the Bluetooth
settings. If they don't show as connected, just make sure to open the case.
Leave the case open, or pop the buds in your ears.
Then tap on the i icon to the right.
The AirPods themselves can be renamed. If this is your second set of AirPods it
may be named by default something along the lines of "Andrew's AirPods #2"
which you could change to "Andrew's AirPods" if you no longer have your
original pair or simply want a different name.

For more customization, you can control what happens when you double tap on the
outside of each earbud. By default, it is set to go to the next music track on
both. It can be changed to previous track, activating Siri, playing/pausing, or
nothing at all.
We recommend going with previous track on the left ear and next track on the
right here. Music is automatically paused when the earbuds come out of your
ears and Siri can now be activated on the second generation by just saying that
well-known key phrase "Hey, Siri!" That leaves previous and next track controls
the most intuitive.
Automatic Ear Detection can also be toggled off, if you so choose. Ear
detection automatically transfers audio to the headphones when placed in your
ears and disables it when removed.
AirPods automatically transfer audio to either the left or right microphone
based on which it thinks sounds best/clearest but that isn't always the best
route. By designating this manually, you can be sure the best option is chosen
for your environment. If you leave this on, another quick tip is by taking a
phone call with one earbud in at a time. If the battery starts to die on that
earbud, you simply put the other in your ear, then remove the first and it will
route the audio to freshly charged earbud letting you talk for far more than
the five hours Apple quotes for the second gen model.

All of your devices
Thanks to iCloud, AirPods are automatically available on any device Apple
device you own. That includes Apple Watch, Mac, iPad, and Apple TV.
On Apple Watch, swipe up from the bottom to enter Control Center and tap the
AirPlay icon. Now just choose your AirPods. On your Mac, open your AirPods and
select the audio icon in the menu bar (your battery life will also be shown).

AirPods being accessed from the Apple TV From the Apple TV, swipe down from the
top, go to audio section, and your AirPods should be listed. From the Home
menu, tap and hold the play/pause button to bring up the audio controls which
will also list your AirPods.
You need to be signed into your iCloud account on all these devices for this
feature to work.

AirPods battery on Apple Watch
>From Apple Watch, you have a few more handy options. In Control Center, if you
>tap on the battery icon while the AirPods are connected, you will see the
>remaining charge on each bud.
Since we are talking battery, the Battery widget on your iOS device also is a
good location to see the AirPods battery life without having to bring them near
your device.

Getting more out of AirPods
If you've ever misplaced your AirPods, you know what a str

Hi,

Totally doable. Simply select the song, songs, or titles within an album then
press cmd-i to Get Info on the songs. Either press tab until you find the
Genre field, or VO navigate to the Scroll area, interact with it and navigate
to the Genre field. When focused on this field, you can VO-space to choose
from the available genres, or type one in yourself if you'd prefer to create
your own. Navigate to the OK button and press it and voila, all done.

The big key here for running any type of Vmware based operating
system is that you'll want to have an ssd in the mac to give the best
 experience.
Give windows say 3 or 4 gigs and you'll do fine under windows unless
you are a user who uses lots of memory, then I'd bump it up to say 6
or 8 gigs if you needed too, but I haven't found that I have needed to do
 this.

Worth noting that VMWare Fusion allows you to share the clipboard
between Mac OS and MS Windows - it's like running another piece of
software on top of Mac OS; needless to say that it isn't without its
own set of challenges vis a vis sharing hardware resources and so
forth. Moreover, I'm not sure that even your 16GB ram will be
sufficient for running Windows on VM very smoothly. So you're
 probably better off with Bootcamp.
 Good luck

Thanks for the info regarding the sound card.
At this point, I’m not sure it’s even worth it. I’ll have to do a little

Do VMs work ok with the built-in sound card on the Mac Mini?

not really,

I don't mind face id now I've gotten use to it,
My phone is the x so I've had 18 months to get to know it well.

Subject: Thinking of Downgrading Back to iPhone 8 Because of Lack of Touch ID -
Finding Face ID not as Efficient and Slower

I got the iPhone 10S around launch time, and while of course face id
technically works with VoiceOver, I find its much less efficient and time
consuming than touch id. It seems to take more effort than it did with touch
id.

At least a few to several times a day I have to manually enter my passcode.
This was rarely the case with touch id, maybe with touch id, I might have to
manually enter my passcode a few times a week rather than a few times a day.

I have to concentrate a little bit to get face id to work where as the touch id
"just worked," it was kind of like breathing you never had to even think about
it for a nanosecond.

I wish someone did a study to see how much longer it takes VoiceOver users to
unlock the phone with face id instead of touch id. I would be shocked if it
the same or faster.

It probably takes, I'm just guessing, an extra 1-3 seconds on average to unlock
the phone.

I find it also is a much less natural movement to have to pull the phone pretty
far from my face to unlock it as opposed to using the fingerprint.

I am curious if the rest of you have this experience, or if you have gotten
face id to the point whereyou think its just as efficient and does not take any
longer than touch id.

I'm not sure if Jonathan Mosen still reads this list but he has mentioned as
an example and data point that he does not miss the touch id and he does not
find the face id to be less efficient.

I would hate to go backwards but I find the face id to be at least a moderate
annoyance when I was used to touch id working nearly perfectly 99% of the time.

Best,
Mika

Windows will run just fine on a mac with 16 gb of ram.
I have an Imac mid 2013 here and I run windows on it every day with out any
issues.
The big key here for running any type of Vmware based operating system is that
you'll want to have an ssd in the mac to give the best experience.
Give windows say 3 or 4 gigs and you'll do fine under windows unless you are a
user who uses lots of memory, then I'd bump it up to say 6 or 8 gigs if you
needed too, but I haven't found that I have needed to do this.

Worth noting that VMWare Fusion allows you to share the clipboard between Mac
OS and MS Windows - it's like running another piece of software on top of Mac
OS; needless to say that it isn't without its own set of challenges vis a vis
sharing hardware resources and so forth. Moreover, I'm not sure that even your
16GB ram will be sufficient for running Windows on VM very smoothly. So you're
probably better off with Bootcamp.
Good luck
Ben

Hi,
This discussion has come up regarding older mac minis. Can I use headphones
while installing windows using narrator, or will I have to use an external
sound card? Of course, I’m talking about the windows install process as a
totally blind person.

That machine will be fine for pretty much everything you will do,

As for native windows,
Use boot camp and you wont know the difference and get the correct drivers from
apple to ensure everything works fine for you.

RE: Trouble learning face-id

2019-05-08 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi Jarmy jo,

I have turned attention off on my phone as with it on you need to be looking at
the camera to get it to work,
However and this could be the same now on the iPhone also,
On my iPad pro the attention mode was automatically off with voiceover being on,
It appears that apple have thought about that one.

Hope it helps.

Hi, Cliff,

Thank you for responding to me but I have another question. Should the items
about attention be on or off. I looked at something in Applevis and it said
that attention should be off. Is that correct> How do you know when you face
is in the frame?

I hope I’m not being tough on you but just looking for it to work. I know you
and Matt will have the correct answer for me.

Hi,

Not really. The Airport Utility has a UI that makes setup and other processes
easy for the end user, but the troubleshooting log is not particularly robust,
and thus not particularly useful. I expect that there may be some other ways
of connecting that Apple Techs use that access more in-depth stats, but I
haven't found much else helpful. There is an Analytics option under the
BaseStation menu, but it is very limited and I don't believe that it would be
of much help to you.

This has happend in more then tuneinradio so i think its a wifi kind of error

And if need be you can plug a lightening to usb cable into it and run it as a

Means you can charge and use at the same time.

Hi,

Apple only sells the full size keyboard in a wireless version now. So, the
Magic 2 with NumPad, or extended, is the one you are looking for. I use them
and like them a lot.

Re: Thinking of Downgrading Back to iPhone 8 Because of Lack of Touch ID - Finding Face ID not as Efficient and Slower

Hi,

I find that if I hold the phone in front of my face and move it back a little
that generally works - I would say however, that the first time I set the Face
ID up I did it with VO off and my daughter helped me - then I did it again with
VO on and it works better - I think when I did it the first time I did it too
fast so maybe doing it with vo on is better.

But as I say if I just pull the phone away from my face a little so that it is
about 1 foot away that tends to work each time
