Screen reader support for Office 365 on Macs

2019-06-10 Thread Antonio Guimaraes
Hi all,

I am back with the same problem I had 7 months ago. Not that anyone will
remember, but I could not read by column title when navigating in Excel. I am
compiling a list of things that do not work so I can make the case at one of
this year's consumer conventions that this be addressed.

I would appreciate any input about features in any of the Office 365 products
that do not work, can not be performed with VoiceOver on the Mac.

If you think these products are adequate on the Mac side, let me know, too.

Best,

Antonio

Re: high quality speakers for mac mini

2019-06-10 Thread B G
Thank you. I've found a pair on Amazon for £230 which is reasonable I
suppose. I wonder, are they wall mountable?
Thanks also to everyone else for their recommendations.
I was going to buy a monitor with built-in speakers but then it
occurred to me that for £120 I might not get the audio quality I would
be happy with. There's nothing worse than tinny, substandard speakers
to assault your eardrums. There we are. *smile*

regards, Ben

RE: Using selective sync in dropbox?

2019-06-10 Thread hermanfermin
That is a temporary work around. That is not an acceptable solution though.
Please don’t let dropbox tech support lead you remotely to that as a possible
solution. Especially when you are able to do this independently on other
platforms.

I would start the process by asking for an update regarding this since as of
six months ago, it was escalated to engineering for a fix. In the meantime,
Phil’s suggestions if you don’t want to wait for Dropbox to get back to you,
are absolutely doable.

Isn’t there a “select all“ button somewhere in that selective sync screen? I
believe we all had a workaround about this where you could simply select all,
and then go through the list hitting on the ones you don’t want to sync.
Another potential workaround is to use Be My Eyes app. People there would love
to help you know which folders are selected and which aren’t as you move down
the list and select and deselect folders.

On the windows side of dropbox, you can check, and uncheck, the folders you
don't want synced to your computer.

I can't seem to figure out how to do this on the mac side.

Re: Good Quality Speakers for the Mac Mini

2019-06-10 Thread 'Dan' via MacVisionaries
Hello,
I'm also looking for good quality speakers for the mac mini.
I am attempting to find USB speakers. Not just USB powered, but also using the
USB connection for audio as well, not the 3.5 MM jack.
I have found external sound cards. I've also found many USB powered speakers
but they still use the 3.5 MM jack for the audio. Not what I want.
I'm still looking.
Any suggestions?

Re: Good Quality Speakers for the Mac Mini

2019-06-10 Thread Mary Otten
I have the Bowers and Wilkins MM one speakers. They have been out for quite a
few years, but I absolutely love them. When I bought them years ago, they were
$300. I would hope that by now they will have a come down some. They are
wonderfully musical, particularly if you like classical and jazz. Amazing
frequency response for the size of the speaker.

RE: high quality speakers for mac mini

Hi, I found the name of the speakers I have and really love: IK
Multimedia iLoud Micro Monitor Ultra Compact Studio Monitors.
I paid $230 on ebay but I think list price is higher than that.

Re: Good Quality Speakers for the Mac Mini

2019-06-10 Thread jeff `greene
Hi, I like the Audio Engine A2+ speakers they are really sweet! Also
some of Logitech's higher-end speakers are pretty good, I'd stay away
from the under $100 models though. I have a really good pair plugged
into my mac mini but can't remember the name, I know the name has the
word "digital" in it and they cost like $250 a pair. One last note
I've often found that that site called something like top 10 reviews
has been invaluable in the past. Just do a google search for the best
pc speakers in 2019 and you'll find it.
Hope this helps! Jeff

Re: Using selective sync in dropbox?

2019-06-10 Thread Phil Halton
Isn’t there a “select all“ button somewhere in that selective sync screen? I
believe we all had a workaround about this where you could simply select all,
and then go through the list hitting on the ones you don’t want to sync.
Another potential workaround is to use Be My Eyes app. People there would love
to help you know which folders are selected and which aren’t as you move down
the list and select and deselect folders.

Re: Is there a limit on the number of devices you can have signed in to iCloud drive?

2019-06-10 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

I've not noticed a limit, but I really haven't put more than four or five
devices using iCloud Drive at a time. I believe that there is a limit of 10
devices that can be associated with your Apple ID, so that may be a limitation.
Although, that may also be different now that HomePods and Apple TV's are
associated with your Apple ID. It would be annoying to use up the device count
just because you like multiple HomePods and Apple TV's in your house.

Re: Not Bourne Again

2019-06-10 Thread 'Jason White' via MacVisionaries
In preparation, under Mojave I used chsh to change the shell to /bin/zsh.

You can do it as follows:
chsh -s /bin/zsh

I am yet to learn much about zsh. It's mostly Bourne shell compatible,
apparently. It's also available under Linux, of course, for those of us who use
Linux as I do.

Hi Michael,
I experienced this as well. What usually helped was closing iBooks completely
even from the App Switcher. After reopening it worked as expected.
All the best

Re: iBooks

2019-06-10 Thread Michael Busboom
Hello.

I, too, use the Books app on my iPhone XR and am very satisfied. The only
really frustrating issue for me (or it was frustrating when I last encountered
it about a year ago) is that it is very difficult, though possible, to use the
app when the screen is locked. With Voice Dream Reader, you can lock the
screen and the book keeps being read aloud. However, when I tried locking the
screen while the reading of an iBook was in progress, reading stopped. I
couldn’t make this work with the Books app, even though I had turned „Speak
screen“ on.

Best regards and happy reading!

 Hi Donna,
What do you mean when you say you will be adding Amazon? The only Amazon

that. Hulu has just started having audio description. I think they only
have a couple of things. But I’m unsure about what you can “subscribe to“

accessibility of the actual apps on the Apple TV, because I use my Fire TV
for Amazon prime, where it is of course, very accessible.

Hi Mary,

I've actually spent some time googling who has more of the shows we like. It's
pretty much a toss-up each has one or two programs that the other doesn't, but
many of the shows we would watch are on both. Weighing in in favor of Prime of
course is all the other stuff you get as a Prime member. So for now, I'm
leaning that direction. I just thought I would check here first to see if
there were any known accessibility issues with either of them. thanks for your
input.
Cheers,
Donna

Re: Using selective sync in dropbox?

2019-06-10 Thread Michael Busboom
Hello.

I have been wanting to selectively synch specific folders, but not others, for
a long time, too. Is there a specific person at Dropbox to whom we can address
this question, or should we just use supp...@dropbox.com
, provided that email address exists?

Thanks,

Virtual Uber trips on the iPhone?

2019-06-10 Thread Michael Busboom
Hello everyone,

In the next few months, I will be traveling outside of Vienna, Austria, where I
live. In order to plan just a bit, I am wondering if it is possible to
simulate a location and then from that virtual location, determine
approximately how much a trip to a nearby destination would cost, were I to use
Uber. I am only looking for ballpark cost estimates.

I have the Uber app, as well as BlindSquare installed on my iPhone XR. Do I
need to temporarily disable Location Services, and what other steps do I need
to take to accomplish this task?

Thanks in advance,

Mike

RE: new mac books

2019-06-10 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi Janina,

 To late,

I've grabbed the 16GB I7 pro and as for the keyboard well that's something I
can't get around as apple don't make a better option.
If I get stuck I'll just make changes with a hot stick or something.

Hi, Simon:

Being limited to 8Gb RAM might be a problem if you're running Win10, and
especially if running in a vm.

But, I should think a keyboard you don't like would be even worse.

Can you hold out to see what comes from Apple later in the year? A lot of
people are having issues with the newer keyboards. Seems reasonable Apple will
do something about those complaints.

RE: Amazon or Hulu on Apple TV?

2019-06-10 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi Donna,

I have prime membership but don't use it a lot,
The other I've never heard of.

When I have used prime it's worked ok for me.

Hi Mary,

Unfortunately, it's not that simple. We are not currently Prime members. so
our decision is between signing up for Prime--and getting the free TV--or
signing up for Hulu. If you get Hulu Premium, they cost about the same..
Cheers,
Donna

Hello Robert,

I assure you that I, too, experience this same issue. It has been around for
the longest time.

However, a little bird, from the Apple orchard, sent me an email, a couple of
days ago, stating that this glitch should be resolved in iOS13 and that I
should update my bug report on it, once confirmed.

As yet, I have not downloaded a beta of iOS13 to confirm the claim, but we can
certainly keep our proverbial fingers crossed, eh?

Happy Travels,

IOS 10 and
iOS 11 Maps App Card Grabber TimeOut VoiceOver Bug

DESCRIPTION:
In iOS 11, only when VoiceOver is enabled, the full-screen Card Grabber
display, times-out after 10 seconds, when reviewing the live route details list.

Steps to Reproduce:

1.
Make certain that VoiceOver is enabled.

2.
Open Map and activate a route by selecting a destination and tapping the GO
button. Siri will announce a direction instruction; for example, "In one mile,
turn left onto Main Street."

3.
Single-finger, double-tap the "Arrival" label, located near the lower left of
the display in order to activate the Card Grabber which will bring up various
route options.

4.
Select Details. A directions list will be displayed. Unlike for a
non-VoiceOver user, for whom this list will remain on the screen until the DONE
button is activated, after approximately ten seconds with or without screen
activity, the list will disappear as if the VoiceOver user activated the DONE
button.

Please check this out.

Thank You,
Robert Cole

RE: mac book pro 2017

2019-06-10 Thread Simon Fogarty
Yeah Just checked this out.

So apple have made changes this year to the touch bar models of the mac book
pros,
But not to the non touch bar models.

The device I was looking at is the non touch bar and therefore the 2.5GHz I7
model of the mac book pro and as there is only $50 between the model from
refurbished and a brand new model I got the refurbished.

 It should hopefully arrive Thursday.

The only thing I don't get is the new butterfly keyboard with the silicon
membrain beneath the keys to catch food and dust etc under the keys.

We'll see what it does when it arrives.

So, I've been playing pretending I didn't have the boot chime and simply
holding in option for a longish time while pressing the power button second.

I still want the chime, but I can see making it without it. I can reliably
get to all three of my available environments.

I'd go for the greater processing power of the I7. In the grand scheme of
things, that's a steal for only $50, because you get to live with the benefits
for a long time.

Hi Anders,

Apple created a new keyboard called the butterfly keyboard,

It’s a lot flatter and to me less definition between keys

But it’s what apple are putting gin all their mac book types now days.

disappointed. It looks to me like the only advantage of leaving my 2014

I'm back to looking at the small Thinkpad X1 Carbon machines for

returned to apple?
I just wondered if this might be a problematic model as there are 3 of
them showing in the NZ apple website refurbished list.

Cheers for any information.

RE: iBooks

2019-06-10 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi Ben,

Books on the iPhone works very very well.

I use it on my iPhone and iPods all the time.

I’ve not had any issues with it at all.

Thanks Anne , I just tried it on my mac with an old book I had purchased
awhile back and it seemed to work okay . I am anxious to see how it works on my
iPhone xr .

Thanks again ,

Hello Ben,

Both on the Mac and on iOS, iBooks is now just called Books. On iOS, it’s very
easy to use, rather less so on the Mac.
Cheers,

Anne

Do you mean on the computer or books on the IOS platform?

If on an iPad or iPhone then fantastically accessible
I use it all the time.

If on the mac OS platform then I can’t really say as I don’t use it but I’d bee
surprised if it wasn’t accessible
