Re: Hey Siri not working well on HomePod after update

2019-10-31 Thread João de Sousa e Silva
I have that problem. Restarted, Siri off/on etc. Called to Apple and it
is a general recognized problem. They said that a fix is on the go in
the next few days. Ohhh I am so tired of these bloody updates…

RE: Reformating iMac and Installing Catalina

2019-10-31 Thread Simon A Fogarty
Hi angus,

Firstly both of those will work, but you will need to have a wifi network
available to connect to as they need the internet to get to your installation
media which in those cases comes from apple.

As for your SD card,

I’d try these 2 options.

On start up if you can see enough
Hold down Just the Option key and kleep holding it until you hear the chime

This will give you all available bootable devices currently available on your
machine,
Including your SD card.

Once this screen shows the devices,
You tab to the SD card and hit enter then just wait for it to start up on to
the installer,

It will either show the language to run as or the utilities.

Then follow your prompts as required.

Or even easier and not needing sight,

Start the iMac up as normal,
Go in to system preferrences
Scrole down till you find the start up disk,
Open this,
Unlock if you need to,
Find the SD card bootable disk if it’s there vo keys plus space bar to select
it,
Then select the restart button which you need to do twice and wait for the
machine to boot from the sd card and as abopve follow the prompts.

If you are going to use the command r or command shift r options then you wont
need the SD card as those both use the interwebness to install MacOS.

Or even better and as tim said,
Just run the installer and it will install over your current system which means
you wont have to worry about backing up and recovering everything.

Hope that helps.

Have you simply restarted the home pod to see if things change?

Yes, you can turn hey Siri off and on. I have also tried holding down on the
play button on the HomePod itself, which will activate Siri. It certainly helps

Ah, thanks. I’ve not come across this yet, but then I haven’t got a Facebook
account or Twitter or anything like that. I do have WhatsApp on my phone and
even. Find that annoying. Suppose you could call me an anti social media person.

Hi,

Two-Step Verification (2SV) is used by many sites like Google, FaceBook, Adobe
and others whereby a six digit SMS message is sent to you that you need to
enter. It is very similar, but has some distinct differences. Specifically,
you need to have a mobile number where the 2SV code can be sent. Google does
have ways around this with Google Prompt, but most others do not. There are a
number of people, especially in Europe and parts of Asia who primarily use
services where they do not have a specific phone number that is a part of the
regular exchange system, so 2SV is sometimes a hurdle. It is more secure than
going without using any of these methods, but I find 2FA easier and less of an
annoyance.

Hi,

I find that 2FA is very easy to deal with. You set it up once, and unless
you're adding new devices, or accessing your Apple ID on numerous devices other
than your own, it never asks for codes again. 2FA is different than Two-Step
Verification which is more annoying.

Sometimes after setting up 2-factor, you will receive a message on your Mac
that you need to login to your account in order to take advantage of all
features.

Should this happen, just login and if you are already logged-in, then log-out

Is it just the silicon ear peace into the ear canal!

iTunes Store and Touch ID

2019-10-31 Thread Petrus Tuerlings
I was wondering if this was normal behaviour with Touch ID on the iPhone and
the iTunes Store? After updating to 13.2 I wanted to purchase a couple of
albums in the iTunes Store and my Touch ID wouldn’t work. I had to go back into
the phone settings and turn off touch ID for the App Store and iTunes Store and
then turn it back on again in order for it to work. Can’t say that this has
happened before as I’ve only started using Touch ID with iOS 13. But once I
turned it off and back on it worked again.

Display brightens itself after Macbook wakes from sleep

2019-10-31 Thread Ibraheem Fakir
Hey list,

An observation I’ve made with my new MacBook Air and Catalina. Every time my
screen locks after a period of idleness or I put my computer to sleep and I
return to unlock my screen or awaken my computer, the screen returns to a
setting of full brightness. I always keep my screen’s brightness at 0%. I do
not turn on the screen curtain feature as I never had to with my previous
machine. I simply kept my display’s brightness at 0% all the time so didn’t
really see the point for screen curtain.

Do I have to use screen curtain now so that my computer screen remains turned
off when waking my computer up from sleep? Is there a fix to keep the
brightness set to 0% and not to restore when unlocking my screen?

Thanks so much!

All best,
Ibraheem

Re: Hey Siri not working well on HomePod after update

2019-10-31 Thread Mary Otten

Yes, I suppose one can do that. It’s just really started acting up today.
Yesterday it seemed OK. I think I would actually like to reset the HomePod. But
after the trouble people had with the update, I really don’t want to go there,
even though they say everything is fixed. When my phone is recharged, I will
try turning Siri hey Siri often on and maybe that will help.
I am wondering if anybody else is having this problem.

Ah, thanks. I’ve not come across this yet, but then I haven’t got a Facebook

even. Find that annoying. Suppose you could call me an anti social media

Re: Two factor authentication

2019-10-31 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries

It is more secure than
going without using any of these methods, but I find 2FA easier and less of an
annoyance.

Re: Two factor authentication

2019-10-31 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries

Should this happen, just login and if you are already logged-in, then log-out

Re: Reformating iMac and Installing Catalina

2019-10-31 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

There is no real need to do a reformat if you are going to use Time Machine to
bring apps and data back to your iMac. This process is redundant. The
benefits of a reformat are seen because you create a clean install of the MacOS
and bring back apps and data via the App Store and other locations. The
reformat then restore from Time Machine ensures that everything is brought back
from the backup including settings. When doing this, you defeat the purpose of
the clean install. With your explanation of what you hope to do, I suggest you
simply install Catalina over your existing MacOS. You will not see any
benefits from the reformat/install process you're asking about.

I’d suggest just insert your sd card with the Catalina installer on it and boot

That way you will be able to use voiceover from start to finish with no reall

Hi,

It depends on which Drag & Drop method you're using. The VO-comma can begin to
drag an item and VO-period will drop that item. There are limitations to this
method as once the item being dragged is out of the VO visible area, the drag
will fail. The second method is a little more finger intensive and can be used
in more diverse situations. The key combination is a toggle, so the first
depress of VO-shift-cmd-space starts the mouse-down action of the drag and the
