Re: OT: anybody on the list using Linux in VMWare or on a separate machine? Pls answer off list

2020-03-26 Thread 'Janina Sajka' via MacVisionaries
OK, Andrew, I understand your situation. I'll give you my advice. But,
as you've undoubtedly already learned, advice is cheap and various
people will be passionate about their views.

So, let me give you a first things first approach as my top suggestion.
Keep it simple, and keep the main thing the main thing. Linux is a "some
assembly" required kind of environment. If you break it, you get to keep
both pieces.

So, forget vmware or any other virtualization. Not because they're
unworthy, they're perfect for their task, but they're complicating
factors that will only frustrate you. After you have experience and some
knowledge, you can always go back there. But learning linux management
under some vm isn't the next thing, it's getting a unfctioning linux in
the first place. I can't stress this point enough.

That seems to leave us with a 13 year old laptop. Forget about running
Orca or any graphical Linux desktop on 13 year old hardware. It ain't
happening--not with your level of Linux skills (no offense intended).

Could I, with my decades of Linux experience get an accessible desktop
working on that machine? Maybe, but not very likely. So, a word to the
wise, and all that.

You can expect to run the text console environment, though, and that's
where the real power and attractiveness of Linux resides, actually. Yes,
Orca is cool and leads in some compelling feature developments. But, Mac
and Windows are far more accessible, imo.

So, if you're uninterested in learning bash (or zsh) console based
computing, you probably want another project.

However, if you're still on board, take heart. You have options, and you
should be able to make Linux talk and drive your braille display with
multiple console instances on each boot that you can readily switch
among.

Now, getting an installation becomes the problem. At this point I again
remind you to keep it simple. Forget wifi. You configure that once the
machine is booting reliably, not as a condition of installation. Plan to
connect an ethernet cable where you can avoid driver issues. The main
thing, remember?

Forget Fedora. It's a powerful Linux distribution and it powers my Linux
vps. I'm sending you this email via my Fedora server in the cloud. But
the installation isn't accessible, so forget it. It just came off your
list--and never mind that someone on some list said they figured out how
to install Fedora with Orca. That ain't you. We're keeping it simple and
keeping the main thing the main thing, right?

Fedora is wonderful to use, but you can't use it if you can't install it
in our current scenario, so you're going to forget it--at least for now.

Debian is good. It has a cadre of true believers that wouldn't have
anything else. Only criticism with Debian is that it's arguably too
conversative, i.e. what you get tends to be older, more user tested
versions of kernels and applications. I do believe it's installation
remains quite accessible, though I don't know the particulars. I'd
google for that info, and also see my additional resources item below.

Arch is what I run on my personal machines. There's an accessible Arch
installer here:

https://tarch.org/

Note there's a fundamental philosophical distinction between Linux
distros like Fedora and Debian which "snapshot" into releases from time
to time on the one hand, and distros like Arch which never have releases
but rather practice rolling updates day by day and hour by hour on the
other hand.

You can also forget vinux and sonar. As you've discovered, they're dead.
There are newer replacements both actively maintained and in process of
development with varying stages of maturity. I have no direct
experience, so I won't say anything more than to note that the community
continues to spin up distributions of Linux aimed at making the process
easier for newbies. Years ago, I was personally involved in such a
project myself.

Lastly, you need to be on the lists with people who focus on Linux as
blind users. Chief of these is the blinux list:

https://www.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/blinux-list

Note you can find additional resources on the Tarch page noted above.

Remember, you're offering up 13-year old hardware for your Linux, so
your goal is console only. In that environment you'll have Speakup
and/or Fenrir for screen readers, and brltty for your braille display.
Those will be your main choices whether you go Debian, Arch, or
something else.

And, you'll be using these either on bash or zsh sells.

Or, you may decide to learn emacs and emacspeak--but that's yet another
kettle of fish that comes well after getting a function, accessible
system working.

Good luck!

Best,

Janina

I tried others and got a lot to talk, but the boot manager on macs is a beast.
So far linuxMint is the only fighter, and it found all of my hardware.

Just my two cents (American).

2020-03-26 Thread Petrus Tuerlings
Yes, she’s finding it hard to get motivated sometimes but she’s doing okay.
She’s in a team of four others and they set up Zoom so they can still have
their meetings. It was odd coming home from work last night and I could
actually smell what the neighbours were cooking for dinner instead of the smell
of Burger King from down the road.
Hey, but at least my coffee pods just got delivered so I’m set.

Re: Question please regarding the option-t time check

2020-03-26 Thread Brandon Olivares
Hi,

Yeah you have to edit the script. For me it’s in
/Library/Scripts/VoiceOver/Time Of Day.applescript

Just scrolling through the script, I think you can remove these lines:

-- readjust for 12 hour time
if (currentHour > 12) then
set currentHour to (currentHour - 12)
end if

Hope that helps.

Re: Cut and paste from Mac to iphone

2020-03-26 Thread Brad Snyder
Sometimes, when the universal clipboard doesn’t perform as it should, I go back
to the source and re-highlight and do the copy action again. Usually things
work as expected the second time.

Hi,

When it comes to the universal clipboard, there are some considerations. I
don't know the specific time restriction, but there is one and I believe that
it is less than 30 seconds, may even be 10 or 15. So, It is best to have the
iPhone open and ready after copying the text from the Mac. Also, the Edit item
in the rotor is not always in the same location, sometimes you need to turn
quite a few times to find it. Lastly, if it doesn't work for you, confirm that
the copy actually took. That is, for fun, try pasting into a TextEdit document
on your Mac. If the text pastes, then it's an issue with the universal
clipboard, if it does not, then it was an issue with the selection/copy action.

Hi Brad and others,

I’m glad I’m not the only one experienced hand off not working. I was starting
to think I was alone with this.

I have restarted iPhone and Mac, turned off Hand off and turned on again on
both devices. I’ve tried selecting on the Mac and pasting on the iPhone in an
edit field. Only one time did the Edit option show up in the rotor and it
didn’t have a paste option. Most times that option is missing but I have a
select text option.

So if anyone has some tips and tricks I’d be happy to try them.

I’ll probably try again to clean out my app switcher , toggle the settings,
restart the devices, and see if those steps bring it back up again.

I’m guessing you’d have to directly edit the script itself. I am not sure

might be easier on the ear. I haven???t got one myself but I think there are

As far as the lack of a headphone jack goes on the new phones,, you do get an

Re: Cut and paste from Mac to iphone

2020-03-26 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries

If the text pastes, then it's an issue with the universal
clipboard, if it does not, then it was an issue with the selection/copy action.

edit field. Only one time did the Edit option show up in the rotor and it
didn’t have a paste option. Most times that option is missing but I have a

So if anyone has some tips and tricks I’d be happy to try them.

I’ll probably try again to clean out my app switcher , toggle the settings,
restart the devices, and see if those steps bring it back up again.

Re: Mail in Catalina

2020-03-26 Thread Eric Caron
Hi Tim and others,
Sluggish moving of mail messages solved.

Well, In the process of trying to get hand off to work again I turned off and
restarted my computer. And though I’m still working on solving the hand off
issue the sluggish mail moving behavior is gone. Got to love that restart
problem solving technique. Keep reminding me of this next time I have an
unusual behavior not seen by others.

Thanks to all those working with me through these computer quirks.

I don’t think I would have upgraded to Catalina If I didn’t know this support
list was out there.

but have you looked at Android phones as well? They might have some voices that
might be easier on the ear. I haven???t got one myself but I think there are

As far as the lack of a headphone jack goes on the new phones,, you do get an

Since the group is set to show people as via the group address, it's not that

If I can't answer your linux questions, which is quite possible because I am
primarily a graphical user of linux, not a command line user, perhaps I can get
you in contact with those who know more. There are a number of different linux

Re: Finding system dialogues on Mac 10.15.4

2020-03-26 Thread Brad Snyder
Hi Brianna,

This is a standard VO Trackpad Commander gesture, and it works without
positioning your hand sideways, with the palm oriented toward the center of the
trackpad. Just keep your fingers close together, and the outside finger close
to the edge of the trackpad, and the gesture will perform the action as you
described.

Hi,

You need to make sure that the window is either in List mode (cmd-2) or Column
mode (cmd-3) and you should interact with the table or column browser to have
many commands work well. You can use option-up to get to the first item in the

commands like VO-fn-left to get quickly to the first item in the table or
browser, and VO-fn-right to get to the last item.

Re: Viewing songs in an album.

2020-03-26 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

Not sure why that would be happening for you. Normally, after selecting
Albums, then interacting with the Grid, interacting with the album name, then
VO-spacing on the album name, then using VO-right to get to the album tracks,
you should just see them all. That's how it works for me anyway.

Hi,

How often are you replacing files on this device? If often, and you are
adding, deleting, emptying the Trash lots, then this often happens. I suggest
you use Disk Utility to wipe the drive again which should get rid of directory
structure issues that may be slowing things down.

To clarify, you are using a 2018 Mac mini without a monitor. Are you using a
DVI or VGA to HDMI adapter plugged into the HDMI port to simulate the presents
of a monitor?
I have been under the belief that either a monitor must be connected to a Mac
mini, or an adapter must be plugged into the HDMI port to simulate the presents
of a monitor. I have been told this was the case on 2012 and 2014 minis.
Perhaps this is no longer the case with the 2018 model.

Re: Mac Mini Now On Order

2020-03-26 Thread Brad Snyder
Sounds like the requirement that a monitor or video adapter be connected to a
Mac mini may no longer be the case, as Apple has put more of a focus on server
and related implementations for the mini. I would be interested in learning
what you experience.

Sounds like you ordered pretty much the same mini that I have on my list. I
wasn’t planning on spending the money for 64 GB RAM, but may go with 32 GB, and
I wasn’t planning on going with the high speed Giga-bit ethernet port either.
Again, this seems something aimed at server implementations.

It's precisely the kind of thing I didn't know.

I was also unaware that the monitor connection is essential. I can cope
with it, but I appreciate knowing not to bother until I can do that. The
pieces I ordered are arriving separately.

Here's what's on order. I went to the higher end because I like my
machines to have long years of service. My typical replacement cycle
seems to be about every 8 years on Linux, and my Airbook is 6 years old.

Here's what's coming:

Also coming is an HDMI cable, the bluetooth keyboard, and a bluetooth
mouse (for my sighted assistants). All that brought the total price
just over $3,300.

I guess the only high-end item I passed on was the 10Gb ethernet port. I
just don't see myself using that anytime in the next few years.

Thanks for this. My issue is that zoom is not listed in the table of apps for

I’ve started using the music to ringtone app to create my own ringtones, which
I really love aside from the fact that if you want to use strictly your IPHone
and not go through Apple Music to sync them, you have to use Garage Band, which
I’m finding not to be as easy as I thought. Under the share option, I found
the option to copy to Garage Band, but once I have it copied, I see no option
to import the file as a ringtone, only options to mix/add tracks to it and the
like. Can someone please explain to me how this is done?

to find a CD with some MP3 files on it and I’ve not got them labeled. How do I
find the DVD drive so I can see what is on the CD?

Hi,
how do you turn of snooze for alarms etc in a 10S?
Thanks for any advice.

Hi,

My understanding is as follows:

1. If Snooze is disabled in the specific alarm settings, just press the side
button or one of the volume buttons to silence the alarm.

2. If Snooze is enabled, use the Home gesture to dismiss the alarm, or the
side button or volume buttons to snooze.

Myself, I don't bother with having snooze enabled, so just have to either press
the side button or the button on my Apple Watch.

RE: a question about voiceover voices on IOS?

2020-03-26 Thread Simon A Fogarty
Hey Tim,

Bad luck,
If you could fly in to NZ then you’d automatically go into 14 days isolation
which means Petrus has time to hide or hunt you down before you got to him.

Yeah I’m in the high risk status also as a type 1 diabetic and asthmatic

But I’m not going to be able to stay hidden away for four weeks so I have to
get out and go for a walk each day,

There are still people out and about both on foot / exercising and also driving
around in all types of vehicles.

I’m blown away by how something so small and crazy can stop the world
functioning in a normal state.

I don’t believe the 1918 spanish flu caused this much trouble to the worlds
population at the time.

Everyonee take care and keep your hands to yourself, so you can’tcatch unwanted
buggs.

Hi,

If Petrus wasn't so far away, I might have to linch him ;). Couldn't fly down
there right now either, so I guess you're in the clear Petrus.

Hope all is well down there for you. My wife is in the high-risk category, and
my daughter just made it back from the UK early Sunday morning, so we're in
self-isolation mode at our place. I'm a geek, so working from home is not an

2020-03-26 Thread Simon A Fogarty
One way I found worked for me is to remotely connect to their machine and over
the phone or facetime etc you can listen to voiceover speaking once you've
enabled it.

The only way I know apart from the above is when you have a mac server in the
middle which both machines are connected to and then activate voiceover on the
remote machine to be able to listen on your machine

Re: OT: anybody on the list using Linux in VMWare or on a separate machine? Pls answer off list

2020-03-26 Thread 'Andrew Lamanche' via MacVisionaries
Hello,

A few years ago I had a go at trying to learn Linux but I failed and gave it
up. I never quite parted with the idea of ever returning to it. So firstly I’d
like to find out what distro I could most reliably install in VMWare Fusion or
on an old Del laptop from 2007 I think, and whether I could accomplish it
without sighted help. I’ve been doing a lot of research on it over the last
few days given I have lost my work due to coronavirus and am having to stay at
home. When researching the accessibility of Linux, some say Fedora is better,
others recommend Vinux or Sonar but both Vinux and Sonar have folded and have
not been updated although some pages are still on the web. Debian is supposed
to be accessible and I tried the last distro but while I was able to start the
installation after having burnt the .iso to cd with sighted help, the
installation failed because I was unable to connect it to my wifi: Linux wasn’t
finding the name of my wifi at home - something wrong maybe with drivers ,
goodness knows. Debian is supposed to have Orca and Braille support. So yes,
if I could successfully install and run a Linux distro with orca and Braille,
I’d like to have a go at learning Linux. It’s a tantalizing prospect given
linux reputation for stability and safety. But I’m rather inexperienced in
terminal or command line so maybe I will fail again. Still, nothing ventured,
nothing gained. So if I could find out a bit on which distro might be best for
me, and perhaps some contacts off the list to ask question, or even if a
proficient linux user who’s blind has the time and would be willing at some
point to give paid tutorials on Linux, I’d certainly feel more secure in this
venture. Linux requires a whole new vocabulary whose terms I’m trying to
understand.

Re: Zoom, and Voiceover accessibility information

2020-03-26 Thread 'Janina Sajka' via MacVisionaries
Does anyone know whether the rather nasty security flaw in the 2019 Mac
Zoom client has been thoroughly fixed?

I should hope it's now all in the past as the news is about a year old, but I
prefer caution to assumkption.

Threat report is here:

https://nvd.nist.gov/vuln/detail/CVE-2019-13450

Here's a plain language story about this vulnerability from Yahoo:

Re: Zoom, and Voiceover accessibility information

2020-03-26 Thread 'Janina Sajka' via MacVisionaries
Jonathen Mosen is offering a free audio book about using Zoom with
screen readers. His setup uses JFW, but also IOS and Voice Dream. Here's
the link:

https://mosen.org/zoom/

Zoom is considered one of the more accessible teleconference platforms
out there. And, they have a corporate policy supporting accessibility
that's been in place for some time. Read about that here:

Re: Mac Mini Now On Order

2020-03-26 Thread 'Janina Sajka' via MacVisionaries
Apropos monitor or not, I note that a number of the high end reviews of
the 2018 Mini, and I think Apple itself talk in terms of some industrial
applications where a stack of Minis provide some kind of aggregate
service.

So, if these Minis are stackable in a server environment, it's highly
unlikely each and every one of them would have a monitor attached.
Things don't work like that in server rooms, imo.

Indeed, having shopped now for KVMs, the higher end of KVM gear supports
8 o 16 units via a rack mountable KVM switch. I guess that's at least a
dummy connection, I suppose.

OK, Matthew. Thanks! While I plan to provide a monitor for my sighted
assistant, I'm happier not needing one, especially at the first.

Re: Mac Mini Now On Order

2020-03-26 Thread 'Janina Sajka' via MacVisionaries
Ah, fascinating.

I expect I will rework my setup to be directly driving at least three,
possibly four separate machines. I expect to put a modern, HDMI enabled
KVM in the path, and I've done shome KVM shopping but haven't ordered
anything yet.

It'll be interesting whether I end up with a PC keyboard or the Mac
bluetooth keyboard as my main work keyboard via the KVM. It appears
there is both Windows and Linux support for using a Mac keyboard. So,
I'll likely play around with each for awahile before settling on
something based on experience.

PS: In addition to the KVM I'm planning to upgrade my hardware audio
mixer. Still investigating good options there.

Best,

Janina
