Tim,
No, I did. I had three with duplicate information, and one duplicate. All I
could do was to click on the merge button. Have no idea which ones were

Hi Petrus,

Sometimes, you can just change your locale and it will show up. I was able to
do that on my iPad and iPhone for a bit when the News app was available in the
US, but not here in Canada. It is available here now, so I can stick with
Canadian content.

Compared: Magic Keyboard versus Smart Keyboard Folio, Apple Insider

2020-04-23 Thread M. Taylor
Compared: Magic Keyboard versus Smart Keyboard Folio
By: Andrew O'Hara
Apple Insider
Thursday, April 23, 2020

Apple now sells two choices for iPad Pro keyboards. AppleInsider compares
the Smart Keyboard Folio to the new Magic Keyboard to see how they stack up
and which one is worth it for the price.

As it stands, iPad Pro users have two official options when it comes to
Apple-branded keyboard cases. Users could use any of Apple's Bluetooth
keyboards, but the Magic Keyboard and the Smart Keyboard Folio are the only
two available just for iPad.

Each of these supports the same models. There is both a Magic Keyboard as
well as a Smart Keyboard Folio for both the 12.9-inch and 11-inch iPad Pros
from 2018 and 2020.

On the surface, it appears the primary differentiator is the inclusion or
lack of a trackpad. But actual differences go far beyond that with a huge
array of functional, design, and cost differences.

Smart Keyboard Folio
Apple's Smart Keyboard has been around for several years now. Debuting with
the original 2015 iPad Pro before being redesigned as the Smart Keyboard
Folio in 2018 with the redesigned iPad Pros. The redesign wasn't
well-received and for the past year and a half users have been exploring
other options.

But the Smart Keyboard Folio isn't without its merits. Between the two, the
Smart Keyboard Folio is far lighter than the Magic Keyboard, lending itself
better to travel when you want to keep your weight down as much as possible.

The Smart Keyboard Folio also has the benefit of being almost entirely
water-resistant. Apple makes these keyboards from a woven fabric that is
stiffened around the keycaps. Because of this, no liquid is capable of
getting into the keyboard itself, and the same goes for dust or other small
debris.

There are two viewing angles on the Smart Keyboard Folio, a more vertical
one for watch media and a more inclined angle for productivity. It connects
via the Smart Connector and has minimal draw on your iPad's battery life.

Magic Keyboard
Apple's Magic Keyboard has much more going for it. It too uses the Smart
Connector but has a full scissor-switch mechanism-based keyboard and a glass
trackpad. This does eat up a bit more battery life, but not by all that
much.

Using a scissor-switch mechanism for the keyboard is a big change. It isn't
water-resistant like the Smart Keyboard Folio, but it is far more responsive
for typing. The fabric keys have a "click" to them but it is very soft and
can even become "stuck" even when they aren't being pressed.

Magic Keyboard is also backlit. It adjusts automatically based on the
ambient lighting in the room but can be manually adjusted from settings.

Overall, the Magic Keyboard is far nicer and more reliable.

Magic Keyboard arrow keys versus Smart Keyboard Folio
One small, but critical detail, is the arrow keys. On the Smart Keyboard
Folio, Apple has a compact design to the arrow keys but are a bit harder to
identify. Apple reverted back to the inverted "T" design with the 16-inch
MacBook Pro and they changed it on the Magic Keyboard for iPad Pro as well.

By choosing the Magic Keyboard, you are also adding a second USB-C port to
your iPad Pro as well. This is great for charging the iPad and leaving the
port on the side of the tablet free for other accessories.

While the Magic Keyboard is heftier, it is due to metal plates within the
keyboard itself. This makes it much more rigid and easier to move about. If
you pick up the Smart Keyboard Folio by just they keyboard, it bends and
warps while the Magic Keyboard stays firm.

Trackpad support on the iPad Pro through the Magic Keyboard
Trackpads are newly supported within iPadOS as part of the 13.4 update. It
makes a huge difference if dealing with editing text, spreadsheets, and even
video work. You can always use an external Bluetooth mouse, but having it
integrated right into the trackpad it is much more convenient.

Key features of the Smart Keyboard Folion versus the Magic Keyboard
Magic Keyboard, Smart Keyboard Folio.
Connectivity
Smart Connector, Smart Connector.
Key Type:
Scissor switch mechanism, Woven fabric.
Function Keys:
None, None.
Backlit:
Yes, No.
Arrow Keys:
Inverted "T" design, Block design.
TrackPad:
Yes, N/A.

Should you buy the Smart Keyboard Folio or Magic Keyboard?
The decision between the two is mainly down to if you need the trackpad or
if you want to spend the lofty price Apple asks for the Magic Keyboard. If
you don't want to spend the money, the Smart Keyboard Folio is a great,
durable keyboard that uses the Smart Connector and offers up some
protection.

But if you want the best of the best, you will have to shell out for the
Magic Keyboard. The keys are better, more durable, backlit, and the entire
body is more stable. You are also buying an additional USB-C port to the
iPad Pro and a fully articulated hinge -not to mention the trackpad. But you
will pay for the privilege.

Where to buy
The Magic Keyboard for Apple's new iPad Pro is available

A big Apple Watch problem, is it possible to fix this or should I just bite the bullet and retire the watch.

2020-04-23 Thread maurice mines
Hello everyone on the list, here’s the situation I have an Apple Watch series
3 that I kept after I upgraded to a series of five. Because of everything it’s
going on my sisters watch is now dying. So I figured I would just erase my
watch and give it to my sister. Apparently not so fast. Number one the Series
III has been sitting in a drawer for six months so I unfortunately could not
remember the passcode. Then while trying to get this fixed, they watch tells me
that too many attempts please reset and repair. Unfortunately VoiceOver was
running so when this potential fix froze there apparently is an alternative
method to accomplish this. The way was explained to me one holds the crown
down, and the button that’s just underneath the crown on the right side forcing
the watch to essentially reboot. Then it is apparently able to hold that same
bottom button down and Shut down then Meares button apparently should appear.
After spending an hour on the phone with Apple today, and having my cited knees
help me, it was determined that the watch was defective. Because the screen is
frozen, and VoiceOver can’t be turned off, sold us the watch cannot be reset.
That has to be sent back to Apple. But because the watch is out of warranty
it’s gonna cost a bundle to fix this. Any suggestions? Or is this really the
end of the road for this device.

Sincerely Maurice Mines.

Re: A couple of questions for the list concerning contact cards on the Mac and I phone and Skype on the Mac.

2020-04-23 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

Yes, that would be annoying. Skype should be accessing your contacts if you’ve
given the Skype app permission to do so. If you’ve gone through the process of
cleaning up contacts, it should eventually clean up those contacts within Skype
too. I’m not sure how Skype works when it gains access to your contacts
though. If it simply copies the cards over and makes its own contact list,
then you will need to fix things within the Skype contacts area.

Hi Dave,

The “Look for Duplicates” item will simply show you the duplicate cards in the
table. It does not automatically merge them, it simply isplays them in a list.
You can decide what to do with them yourself. You could decide to delete one
of them, merge them, leave them alone, all up to you.

Hope this answers your question.

Nice explanation. I tried the duplicate items process, but the only problem I

2020-04-23 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

Regarding contacts, I can help. For Skype, I’ll leave that to another.

The purpose for having so many contact categories has to do with how many
accounts you might have on your Mac or device. So, if you have an iCloud
account, a Google account, a work account and maybe a personal ISP account,
then you would possibly have four different accounts with contact cards. Some
people prefer to keep contacts separate, others like them consolidated, or
somewhere in between. So, All Contacts would display cards from all accounts,,
All iCloud would display cards from just the iCloud account and so on. When in
the Mail app, you actually have access to any of the active accounts, so it is
possible to send a message from your work account to a contact in your iCloud
account, and vice-versa.

When cleaning things up within the Contacts app, there are two menu items that
you might like to be aware of. Under the Cards menu, there is a “Look for
Duplicates” and a “Merge Selected Cards” item. If you look for duplicates
first, then select the duplicate cards, you can then merge the two or three
cards into one. So, for example, if you had two cards related to me, they would
show up as duplicates in the “Look for Duplicates” search. You could then
select them both and then “Merge Selected Cards” and the MacOS would make those
two cards into one. If there were two matchng phone numbers with the same
label, they should also be merged into one.

If iCloud is your main contact repository, then I’d have the new contact be
placed into this account. You can set this up in Preferences on the Mac, or
Settings on iOS/iPadOS. In Preferences on the Mac, the default for new cards
is in the General pane. In Settings on iOS/iPadOS, this is set on the main
page of the Contacts settings.

I use iCloud for my main repository myself, so I have the default set to iCloud
on both my iOS/iPadOS devices and my Macs.

HTH.

You received this

A couple of questions for the list concerning contact cards on the Mac and I phone and Skype on the Mac.

2020-04-23 Thread 'Kawal Gucukoglu' via MacVisionaries
Hello.

For the last couple of hours I have spent tidying my contact cards up on my Mac.

I discovered if I went in to the table of where you could select all contacts
or all iCloud contacts on the Mac, I had so many duplication and old contacts
that meant nothing to me. I even found old contacts of numbers that I had
under my own contact card.

So I’d like to know if I were to put a new contact card in to my I phone or
iMac, what column should I choose such as iCloud contacts, or all contacts or
All ICloud contacts? Why would Apple have all these columns in such a table
please?

My second question is concerning Skype on the Mac.

How should I answer incoming Skype calls and how to end the calls using the Mac
please? Skype on the Mac has got better. I need to use Skype next week to have
a job interview.

I also would like to share with you that I have a possible temporary job offer
to do with CV19 as that was really unexpected under the present circumstances.
So if you want a job and you are VI, if you think you can do a particular job,
go for it and sell yourself as I am sure there will be new opportunities for us
to shine.

Kawal.

Re: a good recording app?

2020-04-23 Thread 'Dan Eickmeier' via MacVisionaries
Hi Shirley, I’d highly recommend Amadeus pro. It’s available both in the mac
app store, as well as directly from the Developer’s website at:
https://www.hairersoft.com/pro.html .
Jonathan Mosen has an excellent tutorial on it, using it from a voiceover
users’ perspective, , which I believe you can still get from http://mosen.org
. Hope this helps.

Re: a good recording app?

2020-04-23 Thread Salvador Domenech Miguel
Hello,

Audio Hijack Pro may help you. But I use to use Amadeus Pro, because it’s the
application that I use for producing my podcasts, so it’s also de application
that I use for recording things.

Maybe you can test with the voice memos application, which is on the Mac since
the macOS Catalina publication.

Cheers,
Salva.

RE: An IOS app to control my windows machine or my mac

2020-04-23 Thread Simon A Fogarty
So you want an app that will let you see download status's on a windows machine
but from your iPhone or similar!

The only thing I could think of would be the Microsoft remote desktop client
which is usable but not fantastic as it's more graphical than verbal.

Although I have used it with narrator on but still very limited functionality.
