Should I upgrade to Catalina or Big Sur?

2020-11-10 Thread 'Donna Goodin' via MacVisionaries
Hi all,

I would love to hear from any of you who are running the Beta of the new MacOS,
without violating disclosure, of course.

I’m still running High Sierra, in part out of laziness, and in part because
work is crazy busy. It’s occured to me that if I want to upgrade to Catalina,
I’d better get on it before the new OS is released. So my question: how stable
is the new OS? Should I upgrade to Catalina, or just skip it and go to the new
OS?
TIA,
Donna

Blood oxygen feature on the iPhone 6.

2020-11-10 Thread 'Kawal Gucukoglu' via MacVisionaries
Hi.

I opened my Apple Watch 6 after it had been sitting in my cupboard for over a
three or two week period as I waited to get my I phone 12 Pro.

So when I started it, it was speaking a foreign language and voice over didn’t
give the English option. So I waited for my cleaner to come and pair the watch
for me as she could hold it up to the camera on my I phone. How does one line
the watch to their I phone camera? If I were to pair it manually it would
probably take me half a day!

Anyway, it’s all set up. So my question is how do you get the Blood oxygen to
work? The only thing is if I wash my hands or dishes it will count down the
seconds. Clever though, it knows when you have your hands in the water.

Kawal.

2020-11-10 Thread 'Donna Goodin' via MacVisionaries
Hi Kawal,

Pairing the watch manually isn’t that hard. I’ve always set up my watches that
way. A code is sent to your watch, and you just enter it on the phone.

Re your other question, Blood oxygen is an app. So, press the Digital Crown to
go into your apps, and then scroll down to Blood Oxygen and double tap. The
watch will guide you through the rest.
HTH,
Donna

Re: Blood oxygen feature on the iPhone 6.

2020-11-10 Thread 'Kawal Gucukoglu' via MacVisionaries
Hi Donna.

I know pairing the watch manually isn’t hard. But I can’t remember the numbers
that is why it can take me half a day if I were to do it. I can’t remember
numbers due to too much oxygen and I think it affected that part of my brain.
I am good at English music and other things but my maths is terrible and I
need a braille display in order to remember numbers as I need that tactile
feedback. I wonder why that is. Mind you if I write stuff on the computer I
prefer to have Braille support. So I wish that the Mac had good Braille
support like windows.

Kawal.

Re: Should I upgrade to Catalina or Big Sur?

2020-11-10 Thread Brad Snyder
Catalina is extremely stable.
I would recommend that you upgrade to Catalina, and wait a while on Big Sur.
Give it some time and see how it works out. Then maybe upgrade to it.

Donna,

I will be very interested in your findings as well if/when you do in fact make
the move. I’m running Mojave, and haven’t upgraded mostly because I was
concerned about the fact that anything higher doesn’t support 32-bit apps, and
I didn’t want to bother figuring out exactly what, if anything, I was gonna
lose by upgrading.

Given the Apple event today, I'm probably going to download Catalina this

Re: Should I upgrade to Catalina or Big Sur?

2020-11-10 Thread Anders Holmberg
Hi Donna!
I think you should upgrade to Big Sur if you can.
The operating system is pretty stable and there are some braille issues in
safari with Catalina.
But that depends on how much you need your Mac for work.
But it should work right out of the box when its released.

Re: Should I upgrade to Catalina or Big Sur?

2020-11-10 Thread Karen Lewellen

Hi Donna,
Granted I am not personally facing the issue, but my general advice is to
consider what you cannot do now that you desire doing. or what might be
done with greater ease?
If upgrading will do things better, without breaking things that work,
then moving to something equally stable makes sense. If not? And the
next os might bring you more? then wait.

Just be certain you are gaining by making the move.
best,
Kare

Tips on navigating News on Mac

2020-11-10 Thread Traci Duncan
Hi all, I’m stumbling my way through navigating the application news. Does
anyone more familiar with it have tips? It looks like headings are a key
navigation. Also using VO-j to jump into the main feed.

Any tips are appreciated.

I’ll tack on another question. Do you all use a RSS app as well? On the Mac.

Thanks,
Traci

Re: Video screen recording on mac,

2020-11-10 Thread Herbie Allen
Zoom is a great option for that. It’s vary easy to set up and you don’t have to
do any customizing. You simply need the free account set up meting ID, Make
sure your recording settings are good, and your VO is set to system default.
There are of course other options I think Quicktime can do some screen sharing,
but I never got VO to come through that way.

what would you reommend for a Mac mini that I got at the very end of 2014? I'm

2020-11-10 Thread Pete De Vasto
Lorie, you and I are in the exact same position, so I’ll be interested in what
others say as well because I, too, am comfortable with I have now. I so far can
do everything I want to, and since I’m retired I’m not in a work situation
where I would depend on it more than I am now.

Re: Should I upgrade to Catalina or Big Sur?

2020-11-10 Thread Christina
I'm still on Mojave because of the Overdrive app. I probably should upgrade,
but I keep holding back because I'll have to learn windows if I want to use the
Overdrive app.

Did I do something wrong?

2020-11-10 Thread Kerryann Ifill
Hi all:

I’ve been noticing a strange behaviour today. My Mac is no longer identifying
persons with their assigned name in my contact list. Eg. The phone number
234-6892 may be associated with John Brown in my contacts and on my iPhone it
will say “Joh brown” is calling or if it’s someone who has a specific tone
associated then it would ring that way. Now it just calls out the number
without the contact name or single.

What did I do wrong?

Theiphone contacts are fine, but not not he Mac. I ran the latest Catalina
update that came out yesterday and it started doing this. Any suggestions for a
fix?

Thanks
Kerry

Hi Phil,

To the best of my knowledge you will need the Dot. You will use the Alexa app
to pair the microwave with the dot.

specify what you are recording eg a video on the net (there are download
apps and browser extensions), video sharing others gave ideas already, or
computer video capture eg for a presentation/tutorial?

 Hi Donna,
Granted I am not personally facing the issue, but my general advice is to
consider what you cannot do now that you desire doing. or what might be
 done with greater ease?
If upgrading will do things better, without breaking things that work,
then moving to something equally stable makes sense. If not? And the
next os might bring you more? then wait.
Just be certain you are gaining by making the move.
