Want to Clean Up an Anti-Virus App

2020-12-28 Thread Bill Gallik
I had installed an anti-virus program on my Mac Mini that I became quite
disillusioned with to the point that I installed MalWare Bytes to replace it.
I’ve been able to “unschedule” the original app so that MalWare Bytes does all
the scheduled. But I am not able to simply delete the app from the
Applications folder; when I try to do so I get an error message that the
program is running and cannot be removed.

Short of opening the Terminal app, executing a “ps -a” and “kill -9” from the
shell, is there a different way to kill the unwanted anti-virus process so I
can remove it?

I like Alex, and sort of like Daniel sometimes, but are there additional
voices for purchase or free? Just wondering. I like Fred's voice, but he
doesn't speak clearly. haha.

Re: Finereader or docuscan.

2020-12-28 Thread John Panarese
I thought FineReader Pro was $99 and DocuScan Plus was $299? Did that change?

Here is the simple comparison. FineReader Pro is fantastic and does a great
job. DocuScan Plus is also a great OCR app and is specifically developed for
blind users. You can’t go wrong with either, but DocuScan’s interface is a bit
more straight forward through the scanning steps.

Re: additional voices?

2020-12-28 Thread Jonathan Cohn
There are approximately, 285 voices that are available as downloads from Apple.
If you pick the name of the Voice in the Speech category of VoiceOver utility,
and go to the last item in the pop-up list this will be "customize".
Pressing this brings up a dialog with a table of voices. Each voice has a
checkbox next to it to determine if if it will be enabled for use in VoiceOver.
After the list of voices is a play, cancel, and a OK button. The Play button
lets you hear a sample of the selected voice. The OK button accepts any changes
and requests System Utility to download the new voices the next time it checks
for updates.

Best wishes,

Jonathan Cohn

John,

Thanks, but just to make sure I understand, should I do these steps after doing
a VO+O to get into the notification area, or as soon as the call comes through
do it right where the VO focus is at?

VO-command-space on the notifications and VO-down arrow down the options. You
can then VO-spacebar.

  Hello All,

Since I updated to Big Sur on my 2014 Mac Book Pro, I have not been able to

answer/accept button on incoming calls. I am able to place out-going with Face

Does any one else have this problem and know the solution? And, second, is it
a bug or just my problem with not knowing what to do?

I called Apple Accessibility to ask for some assistance and I was told that I
really should not update as soon as the OS updates come out, but rather wait a
year or even two. It used to be so simple to either swipe on the track pad or
VO+ Left/right-arrow to the needed button.

Seems to me it has something to do with accessing the notifications since I
could not even get a screen sharing session going with their tech support.

Thanks for any pointers in the proper direction.

Re: Want to Clean Up an Anti-Virus App

2020-12-28 Thread Jonathan Cohn
Well, the command "killall" is a shell script that essentially does a ps and
pipes the results through a few other commands. There is a reasonable chance
though that Launchd would then restart it.

The launchctl command can be used to discover and start stop and disable
Launch daemons.
To list just run
launchctl list
Probably the rest is best to discover on web pages.
Also, I suggest using a programm like app cleaner, Clean My Mac or TInkertool
System .
AppCleaner is entirely free, and only does Finding related files to an
application. You can open it ask it to open an application file, and then it
will list all the associated support files. You can examine then or just click
the erase button at the bottom.
The other tools I mention have some cost involved and can do other utilities to
help unbreak a Computer.

Best wishes,

Jonathan Cohn

Re: SSL Certificate Madness (Rant)

2020-12-28 Thread 'Janina Sajka' via MacVisionaries
Hi All:

This is a note of thanks to the several folks who offered suggestions
for resolving my frustration with Apple Mail. I'm not sure who's
suggestion did the magic, but the issue is now seemingly well resolved.
Sending and recieving mail is working as expected.

As I say, I'm not sure what the exact trigger was that caused my account
to update its SSL data. I rather think accessing my domain web page with
Safari may have actually been that trigger.

In any case this is probably worth a bug report should anyone know where
to file that. Details showed that OS X was aware the old cert had been
revoked, but that didn't seem to be enough to trigger an attempt to check for a
newer cert as
it should have.

Best,

Janina

Re: A Problem Answering Incoming Face Time Calls?

2020-12-28 Thread John Panarese
If the focus is on the window, you should be able to VO-arrow to the, accept,
button and then VO-space. If you have to use the notification center to answer,
then use the approach I mentioned before. Usually, for me, the VoiceOver focus
is right in the FaceTime call window and I just have to navigate to the,
accept, button.

I would like to have one good scanner app on my Mac.
But what scanner app is the better of Docuscan or FineReader?
FineReader is more expensive but you need to register to Serotek in order
 to get DocuScan to work.
 Any thoughts?

It’s hit or miss. I’m not sure if it’s based on what you are doing at the

When last I looked, FineReader for Mac hadn't been updated for a long
time. This naturally prompts the question of whether they're still
developing it. I had contemplated making a purchase, but decided not to
for that reason.

Here is the simple comparison. FineReader Pro is fantastic and does
a great job. DocuScan Plus is also a great OCR app and is specifically
developed for blind users. You can’t go wrong with either, but
DocuScan’s interface is a bit more straight forward through the
scanning steps.

FineReader is more expensive but you need to register to Serotek in

When you are in the voices area did you find:

if you did then you need to interact with this table and then follow my

mouse hovering

2020-12-28 Thread Lorie McCloud
a couple months ago we had a discussion on here about sites like Amazon that
have ratings or advertizements that you can close but as soon as you do, the
open again because the virtual mouse is hovering over them. this is in Safari
on a Mac. somebody outlined instructions about how to change safari's behavior
on such sites from the vo utility. I did this but when I upgraded to Catalina
my settings seem to have gone away. I can't remember how to do it. can anybody
remind me?

thanks.

See if this will help:

1. Open the VoiceOver Utility, using VO + F8.
2. From the Utility Categories table, select Navigation, or press CMD + 4.
3. Navigate to Mouse Pointer, and select “Ignores VO Cursor from the combo box.

I called Apple Accessibility to ask for some assistance and I was told

Seems to me it has something to do with accessing the notifications

Thanks for any pointers in the proper direction.

You can create a VoiceOver activity and specify a web address. I don't have
confirmation that this works. You can also create a commander that does "Toggle

Re: A Problem Answering Incoming Face Time Calls?

2020-12-28 Thread 'Eileen Scrivani' via MacVisionaries
Hi Herbie,

As John describes in that message below, prior to the Big Sur update that is
exactly how it worked for me – just and easy swipe or VO-left/right and press
the accept button. Now, with the update to Big Sur there is no simple way to
just navigate to the accept button when the call comes in.

Re: additional voices?

2020-12-28 Thread Karen Lewellen

 Jonathan,
Do you know if any details about each voice is provided..anywhere?
Its characteristics, frequency ranges, etc.?
Surely there must be some reason that makes each voice distinctive from
each other besides the name.

That such a number exists is honestly astonishing.
Karen

There are approximately, 285 voices that are available as downloads from Apple. If you

Re: Adding Items to the Dock Accessibly

2020-12-28 Thread Brad Snyder
You can easily add items to the Dock “accessibly", by selecting the item you
would like to add to the Dock, and then use the keyboard command CTRL + CMD +
Shift + T.
Once you have added an item to the Dock, you can rearrange Dock items using CMD
+ Option + Left/Right arrow.

Re: A Problem Answering Incoming Face Time Calls?

2020-12-28 Thread 'Kawal Gucukoglu' via MacVisionaries
I have a similar questions for notifications on the Mac.

How do you get rid of notifications once you have them? If I put my cursor on
any, I get a bleep. I get lots of bleeps when something isn’t working with Big
Sur.

I hate messages on the Mac now as it’s not easy to delete the messages now and
I wish that Apple didn’t change the way the messages were on the Mac. I know
this is unrelated but I had to say this as it’s stressful.

I'm reading very long documents on my Mac?

2020-12-28 Thread maurice Mines
Hello, I find myself having to read a very lengthy document on my Mac, I've
heard of several potential ways of doing this but none of them are working. So
I'm looking for suggestions? I am using a 2020 MacBook Pro running Big Sur
11.1. Add anyone found anything to be affective? My wordprocessing
possibilities in terms of applications to read this document are Microsoft word
but the Mac, or tax edit. Along time ago I had pages but I don't anymore. If
this is the appropriate application to use to do this, where do I download it
from? And has it been updated to run on the current operating system?

Two important notes, one my comments and questions above I am asking as a
person. Not a representative of of the national Federation of the blind deaf
blind division. I do however sit on the board and 85% of the emails that I sent
from my computer are related to that, I am very much a volunteer and that's
endeavor. Two the above text hats made it to the computer by means of apples I
built in dictation software. So if there are errors above, they may be the
result of the dictation process, Or action software. If there's something that
you truly do not understand please reach out to me and asked me what my
original intent may have band I will do my very best to help clear up any
potential misunderstandings that may arise from the text. Thank you for reading
this.

Re: A Problem Answering Incoming Face Time Calls?

2020-12-28 Thread Herbie Allen
Messages is pretty easy, Select the conversation you want to delete and do VO
Shift M for the context menu. You will then see the delete option. As for
notifications, do VO O for the notification and widgets. Interact with
notifications and VO right to the one you want, do VO shift space and you can
select your option that you want to do.

VO-command-space on the notifications and VO-down arrow down the

Re: I'm reading very long documents on my Mac?

2020-12-28 Thread Maurice Mines
I DES you are simply this, how do I read it in a document from beginning to
end. In this case it is a magazine. So it is definitely longform reading and
what I'm looking for is the exact voiceover keystroke that will allow me to do
this? I'm happy to know you use textedit if it were to use it. Thank goodness
texted it reads word d documents. Because that's 99.9% of the reading but gets
downloaded that our download it. Another words the bottom line here years what
voiceover I keystroke well allow me to read continuously from the beginning of
the document to the end of the document. That's the main the reason for the
questions.

Please note I set my comments above our mind, they do not reflect the views of
the national Federation of the blind, or the national for the blind deaf blind
division. Note number two do you wear that I am dictating this to the computer,
bicep apples built and software. If there's something that I'm written that you
don't understand, please reach out to me and asked what my original intent
wires. I will do everything I can to help clear up any misunderstandings that
may occur due to the he talks written above. Thank you for reading this.

Re: additional voices?

2020-12-28 Thread Jonathan C. Cohn
Well, I believe they’re only 40 English voice says, and of those at least 10 or
totally useless. Generally they’re marked them as different genders and
sometimes is a compact and a non-compact version. One example of a totally
useless one, is the bells voice that was around since macOS eight or possibly
seven.

Can't open the contextual menu on the dock

2020-12-28 Thread Jason Judy
Greetings everybody,

A braille user here, I'm having trouble opening the contextual menu on the dock
on my 2015 Macbook Pro.

Basically, when I press VO + shift key + m key, it doesn't open the contextual
menu on the dock. The focus would simply jump to the desktop, leaving the dock,
after pressing the contextual menu shortcut. I also tried to open the
contextual menu by holding down the Control key and clicking the trackpad, but
still, the focus would jump to the desktop as well.

Do any of you have any suggestion to get the contextual menu to open?

Another question, is there a keyboard shortcut that will remove an icon from
the dock if I can't open the contextual menu to do so?

Many thanks,

Jace

Re: Can't open the contextual menu on the dock

2020-12-28 Thread Brad Snyder
Sorry to hear you are having trouble opening the shortcut menu for Dock items
using a braille display. I am able to open the shortcut menu using a keyboard,
and the VO + Shift + M command, but I am kicked back to the desktop when I
attempt to select an item from the shortcut menu.

One workaround is to route the mouse pointer to the shortcut menu using VO +
CMD + F5, and then using CTRL + a 1-finger click on the trackpad (or just a
2-finger click on the trackpad).

This is a bug in macOS 11.1. Apple has been made aware of this issue, and
hopefully it will be remedied soon. In the meantime, I wouldn’t worry about
removing items from the Dock. Besides, you need to access the shortcut menu
for a Dock item in order to remove the item from the Dock, so for now you are
stuck.

Re: additional voices?

2020-12-28 Thread Karen Lewellen

What defines a voice as useless?
I suppose a voice named bells, is just a ringer not a talker?
Are the voices say for English first in the order, or must one go down
the list finding non-English speaking voices mixed into the options?
Clarity is an absolute requirement, and I mean strictly on the mac.

Thanks so much,

There are approximately, 285 voices that are available as downloads from Apple. If you
pick the name of the Voice in the Speech category of VoiceOver utility, and go to the

Pressing this brings up a dialog with a table of voices. Each voice has a
checkbox next to it to determine if if it will be enabled for use in VoiceOver.
After the list of voices is a play, cancel, and a OK button. The Play button
lets you hear a sample of the selected voice. The OK button accepts any changes

for updates.
