Re: Announcing indentation

2021-01-18 Thread Brandon Olivares
As far as I know, there is no way. I’m a professional developer and have never
found a way to get VO to announce the indentation.

Nine times out of ten I really don’t need to, since my editor takes care of
indentation automatically. But if I do need to check, I just put the cursor at
the first non-space character of the line, then press down-arrow and see if
it’s still at the first character. If right arrow announces a space, then I
know there’s another level of indentation. But again this hasn’t been a big
issue for me.

Re: Touch bar tools / recommendations.

2021-01-18 Thread Janet Ingber
Hi Jonathan,

You can have the Touch Bar show different functions depending on which
application you are using. For example when in the Mail app, actions relating
to the app will be on the Touch Bar.

set this up by going to the Keyboard preference pane in system Preferences.
Next, select the Keyboard tab and go to the pop-up menu called “Touch Bar
Shows, .” choose App Controls from the menu.

You can also simulate function keys by holding down the FN key and pressing a
number. For example, to simulate F2, use the FN key and the the number 2.
Another option is to hold down the FN and VO keys and flick left or right on
the Touch Bar until you hear the name of the function key you want. Then just
double tap on it.

Hope this helps.

Janet

Yes, my thoughts exactly. Taking it in to a real Apple store isn't
outside the realm of possibility, but it's a great big 21.5" iMac, and
since it's going on four-and-a-half years old, the shipping packaging is
long gone. I'll give Apple a call in the a.m. and start trying to set
something up to diagnose this problem. I can certainly start with one of
the reports that gets generated when it happens, a copy of which I saved
recently. If anyone wants to have a look at it, help yourself.

It's probably time to find a hardware testing utility. You may need to
contact Apple for testing to be done.

More bad news. Now, even after switching back to a wired mouse, the
system did it again. I'm starting to think there's a real live hardware
problem in there. I'm also thinking of reverting to Catalina to see if
things return to normal with the trackball. Any good ideas on how to do
that? Would a manual re-install do it, or would I have to wipe the boot
disk and do it that way, which means I'd wind up deleting some key
stuff, like Mail settings and other third-party applications that have
been installed, like Acrobat, Dropbox, etc.?

it goes almost all the way down to black, then an error window appears which says
something went wrong, there's a long long report displayed, and a couple buttons

Try getting rid of Kaspersky Internet security.
My gut says that is your problem. These types of applications are resource
hogs that are always running in the background.

Re: Announcing indentation

2021-01-18 Thread Brett Lewis
Hi,
Thanks for the suggestion.
Sadly VO-t doesn’t seem to do anything in Visual Studio Code.
I just tried it here in the message and it only did font size/type/color.
Anyway, I learned a new command.
Thanks,
Brett

Announcing indentation

2021-01-18 Thread Brett Lewis
Hi All:
I aim hoping I have missed something, but I can’t seem to figure out how to get
Voiceover on the Mac to announce how indented my caret is.
Ideally, there would be a way to get Voiceover to announce the number of spaces
or tabs at the beginning of a line.
Short of that, is there a way to get my current caret position announced?
I am specifically interested in doing this in a code editor (visual studio code
in this case), but any idea would be great.
I have tried setting a web Spot on the control that announces the ln and col
but this fails about half the time.
Any ideas would really be nice.
Brett

macos big sur and installing apps from the app store

2021-01-18 Thread William Windels
Hello,
I just wanted to install apps on my new macbook air m1 from the app store. I
typed the app that I want install but from then, It was difficult to go from
the search result in the app store to the step to download the app.
IS this more complex with big sur or is it just another way of working?

Thx for any response, William

Touch bar tools / recommendations.

2021-01-18 Thread Jonathan Cohn
Well, my office just bought me a new MacBookPro with the touchbar. I am getting
a little used to it, but want to know if there are any addon applications
useful to VoiceOver users with TouchBar Macs. I generally, use an external
keyboard, since I use numpad commander extensively. But up until yesterday, I
just ignored any discussion about the touch bar.

Thanks!
Jonathan Cohn

Re: vo speaking a different language

2021-01-18 Thread Jonathan Cohn
I was reading a blog this morning, that seemed to use the same plugin. IIt
wanted me to push option-1 for screen reader mode or option-0 to shut it up. SO
I hit option-0 and found that Safari could find no links and no headings. So, I
pushed option-1 and links and headers appeared. My accessibility testing
machine is currently in limbo, otherwise I might have pulled that site apart a
bit and tried to figure out what was going on.
Jonathan

Best wishes,

Jonathan Cohn

Something to Watch Out For in Big Sur

2021-01-18 Thread Steve Matzura
After upgrading a 2016 iMac 21.5" i5 machine from Catalina to Big Sur,
an interesting problem has reared its quite ugly head. When a Kensington
Expert Mouse trackball is connected via Bluetooth and the system is shut
down in the normal way, it goes almost all the way down to black, then
an error window appears which says something went wrong, there's a long
long report displayed, and a couple buttons which can send said report
to Apple or not. Apple recommended a re-install of Big Sur, which I did
yesterday. The problem seemed to go away, but it's back today. When I
changed from using the trackball back to using the standard USB wired
mouse, the problem doesn't happen. I have a third option--the Kensington
Expert Mouse can connect not only to Bluetooth, but also to one of those
Logitech wireless receivers that work on the same principle as Bluetooth
but are technically not Bluetooth. I'm going to try this next and report
back. Has anyone had or heard of a problem with a Bluetooth pointing
device on Big Sur?
