Re: correction

2021-03-03 Thread Brad Snyder
Sounds to me like you have already interacted with the Favorites bar, and your
VoiceOver is focused on the Draft button.

When you first place VO focus on the Favorites bar, you should hear VoiceOver
say, “Favorites bar, Group”
When you interact with the Favorites bar, you should hear VoiceOver say "In
favorites bar, Group, 5 items, Mailboxes button:”, where 5 is the number of
Favorite Mailboxes on the Favorites bar, and Mailboxes button, is the item upon
which VoiceOver is focused..

Yes, I am trying to balance giving you the answers you request with the tools
to find out the information yourself. Hopefully, I haven't sounded to annoyed,
if I have, it is because of other things I am concerned with.

I can tell that you are learning quite a bit about Macintosh and VoiceOver
over the last month. You are doing a great job at keeping at it.

. Have you tried using the Macintosh in a language you are more familiar with?
Though one problem with this, is I expect that if you are using a non Roman
alphabet, that most of the VoiceOver commands would no longer work. You could
re-map the quicknav keys in the commanders section of VoiceOver Utility, but
commands like go to next bold text (VO-commmand-b) might be difficult.

Do you mind sharing what your native language is?

Best wishes,

Jonathan Cohn

Hello,

Did you attempt to find this command on your own? My apologies for asking, but
you continue to ask fairly basic questions here.

Try pressing VO-H twice and then typing in either interact or table. and then
pressing down arrow a few times.

When I did this I quickly came across

toggle table interactivity control option command equals

On the US keyboard the equals sign is the key directly to the left of the
delete key. As recently discussed Windows calls this key backspace to
distinguish it from the forward delete key though I am fairly sure that my
electric typewriter with correction tape called it delete. Just another case
where Microsoft messed with norms. Best wishes,

Re: Apple mail on Mac

2021-03-03 Thread Jonathan Cohn
It changed in Big Sur. In Catalina and earlier, before the list of Mailboxes
was a separate grouping of Favorite Mailboxes.
In Big Sur they are not a distinct groups, the easiest way to see Favorites in
the newer system is to go to the top of the list of Mailboxes. The first line
should say something like:
Favorites 6 items add button.
If you click the add button you can add additional mail folders to your
favorites.
The big advantage to favorites is the builtin commands for them.
command-1 will open the first favorite folder and. command-control-1 will move
a message to the first favorite mailbox.
These commands work up to at least 6 favorite folders.

Best wishes,

Jonathan Cohn

Re: Finding someones e-mail address.

2021-03-03 Thread Jonathan Cohn
This somewhat depends on the distribution system that the list is using. Also,
AOL / Verizon e-mail addresses are generally more difficult to find in the
standard way.
Generally, for non-mailing list and mailing lists senders who don't have their
from changed to the the origin of the mailing list, the below procedure should
work.

1. Interact with the headers
2. Interact with the sender until VO has you interacting with the text
(VO-LEFT/RIGHT) move by work)
3. Press VO-space

This should bring up a contextual menu with options like copy address send
mail…

Az I said at the beginning, in some cases on the MacVisionaries list this
brings up the correct e-mail address other times it brings up
macvisionai...@googlegroups.com
If you get the second result, you can view all headers and look for
x-original-sender:. This works at least in GoogleGroups.

I had started to write an AppleScript to parse all this out when I was
unemployed but that is no longer the case. If somebody wants the starting code,
I should have it stashed away somewhere.
Best wishes,

Jonathan Cohn

Re: command to turn off grouping for the current table?

2021-03-03 Thread Jonathan Cohn

Re: Comparing VoiceOver And NVDA

No matter what I do, I cannot open the context menu for any item on the dock.
It just goes back to the finder, unless voiceover is reporting it wrong, I
guess I could try control clicking with the trackpad on my laptop but for the
mac minis, nothing works.

the way I do this is when I'm in the email press command-option-u. vo says raw

eventually you come to sender.

If you create a reply or forwarded message, in most cases, you should be able
to find the sender’s address in the heading information for the original
message.
If you look in the line below my signature/name, you will find your own email
address.

Re: Feedback update Mantis Q40

2021-03-03 Thread joseph hodge
I wrote this last night but it keeps coming back trying to post again.

Full disclosure I work for APH. However I am totally blind myself and I would
not try to miss lead anyone.

The Mantis for me is a great keyboard. I like that I can switch from my Mac, to
my Windows, to my iPhone easily all one keyboard. I mention this in my demos
but I used to work in insurance and having a keyboard and a Braille Display
drove me nuts because your constantly fiddling where they both are. With this
its one device. I think the terminal where you connect to IOS and such is
wonderful. We have had issues with IOS do to the new Hid standard and Apple
just not getting it right, but these will be worked out shortly.

Thickness its thicker than my MacBook Pro lol. However it goes in my bag fine
where I would put a laptop.

I like having an editor but the older I get I would be just fine with a dummy
device only that connects to my devices I need. I don’t need the extras they
are nice but Bookshare locally I only use for testing because I just use
Voicedream reader and sync between all my devices.

The one thing and place I think I wouldn’t reccomend the Mantis is travel. I
mean the Mantis is small and usable on the go, but if your in a taxi cab do you
see yourself really using a qwerty to type and be productive? If you never use
a display in this manner then it won't bother you, but if you are someone who
uses their display a lot on the go you may not like the size.

Me personally I think I could see this sitting on my desk full time or maybe
take it out to my recliner but I would prefer a skinnier display to take with
my more powerful devices on the road.

RE: command to turn off grouping for the current table?

2021-03-03 Thread Fazil
Thanks much, Jonathan. I do appreciate you for asking me this question.

Please rest assure that I bring the question to the group only when all efforts
are exhausted on my part. I might often be missing something very obvious, and
there

Are two main reasons for this, 1.

I am new to Mac and 2. English is not my First Language.

I am thankful to you for putting up with my goofy questions.

Thanks!

Re: What does Voiceover does or say when a webpage opens completely?

2021-03-03 Thread Jonathan Cohn
I believe there are a few settings in VoiceOver Utility / Web / General that
can effect this.
1. Speak Summary when page loads…
2. Automatically speak page

I have the second checked and usually have the first unchecked. Right now in my
beta copy of Big Sur, with this setting, I get the title of the web page
followed by the words "web content" followed by one span of text from the web
page. I usually don't get more than that. If I click the speak summary, then
after "web content" I get a list of the links, headings and landmarks on the
page.

Hi, Group.

I am sorry for asking this silly question,

What does Voiceover do or say when a web page has finished loading? Or does
Voiceover do different things for each webpage?

Thanks!

Re: Feedback update Mantis Q40

2021-03-03 Thread 'Donna Goodin' via MacVisionaries
Hi Tracy,

That's one drawback to the Mantis. When you switch devices, you have to do it
manually from the device. I didn't keep mine, so I don't remember the exact
process, and the latest update may have made the process more streamline.
Joseph can speak to that better than I.

Using the keyboard in your lap is, in my opinion, a place where the Mantis
truly excels. I loved being able to just put my phone or my iPad on the coffee
table, set the Mantis in my lap, and just do everything from there. If you're a
qwerty user, that feature alone is truly awesome!

BTW, the reason I did not keep the mantis was because I wanted a more robust
editor. I don't care much about calendars, stopwatch timers, and stuff like
that, because I just use my phone for those things. But I do want the option to
do editing independently of my i-device. Mostly, the editor on the Mantis is
pretty good, but it has some file size limitations that didn't work for me.
That said, I'm still very interested in the Mantis, and I suspect that
eventually, I will own one.

The staff at APH are very helpful. I found them to be great to deal with. The
user list for the Mantis is full of helpful people, and when I returned my
unit, the return was handled promptly, with no questions asked. The one
drawback is that at that time--and I think maybe still--the Mantis was
back-ordered. So they had my money for a good month(ish) before I got my unit.
I imagine that either has changed, or will change, because the back order was
due to supply chain issues related to COVID.

Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Donna

My apologies, I guess that message went out as plain text as the links did not
work.
First: the better is linked in this message to the site.
Note, I had never before seen any references to this app. Just for fullness the

The web page does have a nice philosophy, and it sounds like you can either buy
it from the app store or download it for free with a contribute as you see fit

Secondly, the article I included can be found here

Hi all,

So something I’m still not clear on when comparing older braille displays and
new ones, is the multiple connections. My 4th gen Focus 14 connects to one
device at a time, however it does automatically connect. So, if I am on my
iPhone using it, lock that phone and move over to my iPad, the Focus works with
that device.

Is that the difference? The new displays connect to multiple devices, but I
need to reestablish the connection?

Back to the Mantis specifically, could I use the keyboard on my lap?

As far as I understand, I’d purchase Mantis directly through APH right? I’m not
super familiar with them as far as a store goes. Last year I bought some slate
& stylus supplies. :) That’s the extent of my consumer experience.

Thanks,
Traci

Re: Apple mail on Mac

2021-03-03 Thread Brad Snyder
Good point. Should have caught that myself.
I don’t think I've ever had a VIP folder on my Mac Mail app. I’ve had several
different Macs over the years, and don’t remember ever having one, or doing
anything to get rid of it. I could be wrong, and probably am.
I do see the VIP folder as an option on my iOS devices, just not on my Macs.

Re: command to turn off grouping for the current table?

2021-03-03 Thread Jonathan Cohn
Hello,
Did you attempt to find this command on your own? My apologies for asking, but
you continue to ask fairly basic questions here.
Try pressing VO-H twice and then typing in either interact or table. and then
pressing down arrow a few times.

When I did this I quickly came across
toggle table interactivity control option command equals
On the US keyboard the equals sign is the key directly to the left of the
delete key. As recently discussed Windows calls this key backspace to
distinguish it from the forward delete key though I am fairly sure that my
electric typewriter with correction tape called it delete. Just another case
where Microsoft messed with norms. Best wishes,

Jonathan Cohn
