RE: shutting down my Mac

2021-05-31 Thread Les Kriegler
I understand. I do have a USB hub, so I should be fine. I will have 14 days to
make certain this is what I want. I am looking forward to returning to the Mac.
I ordered a book in braille from National Braille Press on using the Mac which
I will use for reference, along with I expect to be great assistance from this
list. I have numerous messages saved in a folder called Apple for reference as
well.

Best,

Les

The TouchBar is not that big of a deal. Once you get use to it, the absence of
regular F-keys is a non-issue. I really don’t miss having F-keys. I would
much rather have the extra USB ports

I have tried using CTRL + Delete on both my 2018 Mac mini, and my 2019 MacBook
Pro 13, and have not been able to get this key-command to initiate a shut down
on either machine.

I am able to use CTRL + Eject, on my 2018 Mac mini, with an Apple wired USB
keyboard, to bring up a shut down dialogue.

This key-command does not work on my 2019 MacBook Pro 13, because TouchBar Macs
do not have an Eject key.

If you leave your Mac sitting long enough, it will go to sleep, and eventually
lock itself.

The key-command CTRL + CMD + Q, will lock your Mac, and put you on the unlock
screen.
You can use CMD + OPT + Escape, to open the Force Quit dialogue.
Force Quit is also located in the Apple Menu on the MenuBar.

I believe this feature is called “Show Lowercase Keys”.
It is found in Settings > Accessibility > keyboards.
When enabled, it changes the Key-labels on the iOS software keyboard, to
reflect whether the Shift/Caps Lock key has been pressed.

The key-command CMD + OPT + Shift + Escape, will Force Quit the current
application.
If the current application is Finder, Finder will restart when the key-command
is performed.

Re: problem with my Mac mini

2021-05-31 Thread Brad Snyder
Lori,

Sounds like you had some sort of process running that was hanging up your Mac.
When this happens, a full shut down, and restart usually fixes whatever is
causing the problem. Sometimes, I find that my Mac mini is really hot, when I
haven’t been doing anything with it. When this happens, I always immediately
shut down, and restart the system, and the issue goes away.

Sometimes I have the same issue where I can’t access the MenuBar with VO +M,
but I am able to access MenuExtras by pressing M a second time.
When this happens, I resolve the issue by restarting Finder, by holding down
CMD + OPT + Shift, and then pressing the Escape key.
This is a faster resolution, then doing a full shut down and restart.

HTH.

Re: problem with my Mac mini

2021-05-31 Thread Brad Snyder
A warning that the Mac will shut down in 60 seconds, and then these seconds
counting down, is standard behavior when selecting Shut Down, from the Apple
Menu. Not sure why there was a hang-up and the Mac did not proceed with the
shut down.

Perhaps there was a ongoing process that prevented the shut down, as Tim
mentions, though in my experience these processes tend to resume themselves
once the Mac is rebooted.

Seems that Lori said the hissing sound was coming from her speakers. She
didn’t specify if her speakers were plugged into the headphone jack on the back
of the Mac mini, or if she was using the mini’s internal speaker.

Hi,

I’m wondering if the hissing sound was the cooling fans for the Mini. There
may have been some process happening in the background, such as an update, that
had caused the machine to work hard and require cooling. With the Mini saying
that it would shutdown in 43 seconds, this also makes it sound like something
was happening that it wanted to finish before shutting down.

As usual, Brad’s suggestions are on the money. If the machine does need time
to do something, allow it to do so, then shut itself down. If the 43 seconds
drags on to minutes, then there is something problematic going on that a forced
shutdown may remedy.

Yes, this is a non-VoiceOver key-command to place keyboard focus on the MenuBar.
Beware that pressing CTRL + F1, may toggle this and other non-VoiceOver
key-commands on/off, or non-VoiceOver key-commands may be disabled altogether.

Re: problem with my Mac mini

2021-05-31 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries

Later…

Re: Retroarch question.

2021-05-31 Thread Jessica Moss
Ok, I’m confused, what is? If we’re talking about my activation key, I have
that copied and pasted already, I’m just not sure if I’ve pasted the url
correctly, so that’s something I need some help with.
Will I find that there as well? I’ve read the example in the users guide
repeatedly and tried to match that, but have apparently done something wrong.

However, even after reading the user guide, enabling accessibility mode,
downloading several emulators within the app and testing them with both
narrator mode and speech mode on several SNES games I know have readouts,
 it’s not reading a thing.
Am I missing a step, or is this something that’s just hit or miss, and
seems to be more of a miss with the games I’m trying to play?

For Sale in the UK: Mac Mini, M1, 2020 (16 GB RAM, 2 TB SSD) @ £1200

2021-05-31 Thread 'Sabahattin Gucukoglu' via MacVisionaries
I have a barely-used 2020 M1 Mac Mini with 16 GB RAM and 2 TB SSD for sale in
the UK. It’s going for £1200 including postage, which is a £500 saving over the
current sales price from Apple. Included: Mac Mini 2020 M1, UK power adaptor.
I’ll ship it to you with the latest stable operating system installed and ready
to set up, just as though it were fresh from Apple.

If you (or somebody you know) are interested, write directly to
listse...@me.com (don’t reply to this message).

I have permission from the list moderator to send this ad.

Thanks,
Sabahattin
