Have used amazon both with the app and on my computer and had no problem. The
only time I had to type in a captcha was when I reset my password, but that was
a while ago. Is your credit card and address stored in your account? If it
isn't, maybe that's why the captcha is needed. No one else in my family has had

 Hello Everyone,

I just returned from a short vacation to Hawaii.

While there, I discovered that there is an Apple Store located in the
beautiful Royal Hawaiian Hotel and Resort down at Waikiki Beach.

Wow! To say that the customer service was world class would be the
 understatement of the highest degree.

Now I've never been to any of Apple's flagship stores, here on the
mainland, but I'll bet, beans to bacon, that the Royal Hawaiian
location mirrors them, precisely, in terms of enthusiasm, class, and
that ineffable quality that sets Apple apart from other tech companies.

As for the Apple representatives? Well, they were the most attentive
and gracious employees I've yet to encounter at any Apple Store. In
fact, I was so impressed that I actually visited the store twice,
just to see if my initial impression was accurate; and yes, it was, indeed.

Now when I travel, I like to purchase products from significant store
locations. For example, I have purchased items from the first
Starbucks store, the first Nordstrom store, Amazon Go, etc.

So of course I had to buy something from the Royal Hawaiian Apple
Store because I may never get that way, again. The problem is that I
couldn't think of anything I needed, (smile).

In the end, I decided to buy a secondary iPad charger for my new iPad Pro.
I am using it to more rapidly charge my beloved iPHone 8 Plus.

While all of my local Apple stores are great places to explore the
world of Apple, I can definitely say that the Royal Hawaiian location
is a cut above and has forever changed my idea of what world class
customer service looks and feels like.

I loved Hawaii but, as the saying goes, there's no place like home.

 Aloha,

 Mark

voiceover menu key not working

2019-04-06 Thread 'Peggy' via MacVisionaries
I thought that The Great Toy Robbery game had screwed up my computer. Wasn't
just the m key that wasn't working, but 7, 8, 9, u, i, o, j,k, and l. My sister
did a search and found that mouse keys had been enabled. That allows a sighted
person to move the pointer and click the mouse using those keys. All we had
to do to fix it is hit the "option" key five times, problem solved.

I have these installed on my Mac via Office 365. They're reasonably accessible
with VoiceOver, but I ahven't used them sufficiently to comment on any
specific issues. Interaction can be slow, however, since they don't provide
equivalent keyboard functionality to the corresponding Windows versions.
Nevertheless, navigating with VoiceOver and operating the controls generally
works.

Subject: Amazon Web Dialog Interference

I apologize if someone has brought this up already, but every single time I try
shopping on Amazon lately, a web dialog keeps coming up; there’s a close
button, but it doesn’t help. It is a nonstop occurrence, preventing me from
going through search results or from navigating the screen. Is anyone else
experiencing this, and does anyone know if there is a way to stop this idiocy?
Thanks much.

their website isn’t very nice to use with screen readers. I have to wonder if

As to the Orbit, people were buying them at the summer conventions. APH reports
that they can’t keep them in stock, due to the limited supply made specifically
for conventions. They’re working on it, though, and hope to have more soon. To
my knowledge, no dates or date ranges were given for when this might be.

Re: reading battery level in sierra, and a few other things

2016-12-30 Thread 'Peggy' via MacVisionaries
I have a Macbook Air. I didn't have a problem checking battery status until I
updated my mac a couple of weeks ago. I use siri to check the battery, very
easy to do.

Hey everyone, going to cover a few different things in one message. First, as
the subject says, has anyone else had issues reading the time remaining or
percentage of a macbook battery in sierra? This happens on my 2010 macbook, and
my girl friend's 2015 macbook pro. While in the status menus, moving left and
right with the voiceover cursor allows you to get to the battery item, but it
just says battery or something similar, no time remaining or percentage, this
happens whether the option to show the percentage is checked or not in the
menu. The only way I know of to get around this is to check it in the energy
saver settings in system preferences. Interestingly, you can no longer use the
regular arrow keys to navigate the status menus, you must use VO navigation. I
don't mind this, actually it's more consistent this way since before, the arrow
keys only navigated built in items like wifi or the battery, third party items
such as dropbox always have required VO navigation to access them.
I can confirm that on the 2010 macbook, the same issue I had with my 2010 mac
mini does happen, when using Alex, speech disappears, sometimes for a few
seconds, sometimes completely, again, switching to a Nuance voice resolved it.
I actually got a Christmas present for myself, a new mac mini, the issue does
not happen on the newer hardware. I am using a fit headless adapter connected
to the HDMI port, out of curiosity, I decided to disconnect it and see if
voiceover was as sluggish as it used to be, surprisingly, I didn't notice much
difference. I didn't run it this way for a long time, but I wonder if Apple has
finally fixed this issue for voiceover users. If not, the fit headless adapter
is definitely a good solution.

Re: braille translation for the mac

2016-11-04 Thread 'Peggy' via MacVisionaries
Hi Becky, there is a free program called louis that should work with El
Capitan. Braille Blaster is also free, but when I went to the site to try to
download it a couple of weeks ago, the only way I could do it was if I was
willing to be a beta tester. Duxbury Systems also has software for the Mac.
They have a beta version, but it costs about $600.00. However, you can download
a demo version for free. Hope this helps.

Subject: Braille translation App for Mac

Hi all,

I will be starting an online class that requires that I do braille translation
in both Nimbus code and you EB math on my Mac. Does anyone know of a braille
translation software that is VoiceOver compatible and works well on the Mac? As
of right now until I know Sierra is completely stable I'm still running El
Capitan. Thank you for your help.

I, too, don't really see the advantage of the Pro over the Air2 for a blind

Guys,

I have been using a mac now for just over 10 years. I started in the days of
mac OSX 10.4.1 Tiger with a Power Mac G4 Quick Silver.

I am at the point now where I could not function without my mac, end of story!
There are a few things on Windows I still do, but very few. I'd say out of an
8 hour work day, I'm probably only in Windows maybe 30 minutes to an hour out
of that timeframe.

So, here is what I am thinking. For those who live in the US, or have
telephone calling to the states, how interested would people like Andy, or
Arnald etc. be with me coordinating and teaching a 1 hour class on the basics
of the mac OS from the standpoint of someone blind who has used Windows all
their life? Make it very clear that I do not plan to charge for this class. I
would very gladly vollenteer my time to do this for you all in a group setting.
The classes would not be all lecture based. I would make them very
interactive. This means, though I might have a small portion of the class
devoted to lecture, 95% of the hour would be helping you all better understand
Voiceover, and your new mac system. Over time, the coriculum would be:

Deciding which mac is right for you
The differences in keyboard layouts
Identifying the FN, CTRL, Option, and command keys
Discussing the Voiceover modifier keys
Turning on your mac for the very first time ever
Turning on Voiceover with no sighted help
Basic VO keyboard navigation
Basic VO trackpad navigation
Why trackpad gestures over keyboard navigation
Completing the first time setup assistant
Creating an Apple ID/ICloud ID, and why
The basics of Quick Nav
Accessing and navigating menu bars
Accessing and navigating menu extras, and what they are
Connecting to a wifi network
Configuring Finder view options to your liking
Accessing right click context menus
Navigating the dock, and what is it
Switching between opened applications
The Running applications window
Switching between opened windows within an application
The Window chooser
System Preferences, and useful configurations
The Finder, and basic navigation
Opening files/folders
Explaining concepts of volumes vs. drives
The Finder sidebar
The finder browser
Icon, list, and column views within the Finder
Changing between the three different views
Renaming files/folders
Copy/pasting files/folders
Selecting files/folders contiguously
Selecting file/folders noncontiguously
Adding items to the dock
Aliuses, what are they, and how to create them
Properly disconnecting USB drives, and external media
Closing opened windows
Quitting applications
Force quitting applications, and when to do so
An entire class hour long devoted to the Voiceover Utility
An entire class devoted to the concept of interacting
Routing the mouse pointer
Querying location of keyboard, Voiceover, and mouse focus
Getting very detailed coordinant locations of cursors
Moving and resizing windows with no sightedhelp
Hiding vs. minimizing
Zooming vs. maximizing
Closing vs. quitting
Setting some useful preferences for Safari
Two dedicated classes to surfing the web
One dedicated class to working with E-mail
Three dedicated classes to the basics of ITunes
The extreme basics of Quicktime, and why you'd need it
Basic word processing/text editting
A very basic introduction to Pages
A very basic introduction to Numbers
A very basic introduction to Keynote
The mac App Store
Software Update
Disk Utility
An incredibly extremely basic intro to Terminal
The notification Center
Audio/Midi Setup, and its rare uses
An intro to the stocked DVD player
An intro to Airplay
Booting into System Recovery
Imaging your drive with Super Duper
Time Machine, and its uses
Migration Assistant, and its uses
Installing, reinstalling, and clean installing OSX
Troubleshooting misbehaving login items
An intro to Activity Monitor
An intro to ICloud Drive
An Intro to Keychain Manager

The final class will be wishing everyone farewell with the mac, and answerring
any questions which may have not already been covered.

Upon completion, everyone would receive an electronically e-mailed certifiquet
certifying their full completion in the corse.

Along the way, some weeks will have weekly assignments which I will ask the

If I do this for you guys, and I do it for free, then realize, I am giving you

Hi all,

Since I shared my negative opinions on SpeedDots yesterday, I also wanted to
write and share some positive follow-up.

As I wrote earlier, I wrote to SpeedDots yesterday. I did not ask for a
refund, but shared my disappointment with the product, and specifically the
lack of instruction for how to properly place it on the phone. I received a
response from them within four hours, which to my thinking is pretty
impressive, especially since it was a Saturday. Their response stated that on
their website it states that this protector will not work without the OtterBox
case on the phone. I had not seen anything that said that when I was at the
site, and I had also had an email exchange with them before purchasing that did
not indicate that that was the case, but I assume the information is there
somewhere. At any rate, they offered me a choice, either a refund or a
replacement with the correct protector for phones that don't have the OtterBox
Case. I chose the latter, as I figure I ought to give it a fair try under the
conditions that they say will work.

Though I could have done without yesterday's frustrations, I couldn't have
asked for a more prompt or customer-oriented response. I still don't know
where I'm going to end re these tactile covers, but the people at SpeedDots get
high marks from me for the way they've handled my situation.
Cheers,

I, too, find the dots disconcerting, but am not sure whether it's because I'm
not used to the dots, or because the placement of the protector is off. If I
place my finger on a dot on the home screen, by very slightly shifting my
finger, I can get VO to read out multiple icons, which makes me think that the
placement is incorrect. Also, in the Messages app, the dot is above the Send

be a perfectly good reason for that, e.g. that dot was intended to mark a

 Hi all,

I just wanted to share my experience with the list.

As you know, I decided to try out a tactile screen protector from Speed
Dots. I got the Otterbox version. I do not currently have an otterBox
case, but got this model so that I would have the right screen protector
if I do eventually get one.

There is absolutely no way to tell how to correctly line up the tactile
cover on the phone. It ends just above the home button, so putting your
finger in the hole for the home button, as was suggested on list, is not
an option. There is therefore no way to determine how high up or not to
place the cover. There's also no way to line it up so that it's straight.
I finally gave up and asked my sighted husband to put it on, but the
buttons still don't read consistently when I touch the dots in the bottom
row, i.e. the dock. At this point, I'd say my location of buttons is more
accurate without the tactile cover. And, at this point, I've taken the
stupid cover on and off so many times, I'll be surprised if it sticks for
 very long at all.

I'm glad it was only $13, but still sorry I gave them even that much of my
money. My advice to the rest of you is don't bother, this is a really
 lame product.
 Cheers,
 Donna

Is it a monthly subscription? How is it working for you?

John, I wouldn’t really go Mini unless you have a specific reason. By the time
you add the monitor and keyboard and other items you don’t save much and I’m
not sure what you gain but maybe you have a specialized application that
requires this so I’m happy to be corrected.

I myself like the Macbook Pro line if you want a laptop. This gives you lots
of horse power for that audio editing and running virtual machines and you can
take the memory up as well. I would suggest at least 8GB if you want to run
more than one virtual machine at a time. If you just want a single windows
instance and nothing tricky you can certainly do it with less but I find once
you start one you want more and I run all sorts of operating systems so you may
wish to consider doubling down on the RAM.
All the other stuff you want to do should be no problem with the lower end
devices. The AIR is nice and thin but it’s not a huge power house although
it’s by no means weak. It’s just on the lower end of the product line in terms
of power but it’s a great solution for it’s size and weight.
