Recommendations for learning to program on a Mac
Hi everyone, I've been a lurker on this list for a while now. I've become interested in learning how to program, specifically to build apps for iOS, to start with at least. But, I'm wondering where is a good place to start learning, and where are there good educational resources for learning that don't cost a lot of money. Free is best if possible! :) Thanks, Dawn Sent from my iPhone -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups MacVisionaries group. Re: Recommendations for learning to program on a Mac
Thanks so much! :) This is the sort of help I was looking for! Thanks for the list recommendation as well as I was looking for one. Dawn Sent from my iPhone On Jul 5, 2014, at 8:35 AM, Alex Hall mehg...@icloud.com wrote: Free is indeed best. :) I recommend simply googling learn objective-c to start with, and reading the tutorials you find. Some will make more sense than others, but which ones depend on your background, learning style, and so forth. For using Xcode, www.applevis.com has a few guides and forums you will probably find useful. I also put a podcast up there that goes through a hello world app which should help to explain things after you get through the basic layout stuff. Re: Blackboard Accessible
Hi Shanna, I saw this thread and wanted to jumpin and say that I've just started using my iPad and BT keyboard on black board in the discussion board area with the 3 online classes I have this semester and haven't had much trouble with it. I haven't tried using my MBP with it yet though as I've always found it easiest just to use my iPod before. I just got an iPad for Christmas. I'm loving it so far. I can and do participate on the discussion board and can access all of the links on my professor's pages. I am using Safari for BlackBoard tough rather then Google Chrome which I just installed to see if it would work better than Safari. Use the track pad or VO keys with BB not quick nab because sometimes they don't work and try interacting with the content, this will allow VO to read and work with the discussion Board. Using Course Smart e-books
Hi everyone, Does anyone have experience using e-books from Course Smart? I discovered last semester at school that this is the e-book company that my University uses the most for their text books. I know they were scheduled to give a presentation at one of the conventions this summer, but I wasn't able to go and sit in on it. So I was hoping someone here might be able to help me. RE: bible desk top clients?
Hi, I don't know if you would be interested in the app I use on my ipod. I personally love it. It's the Gospel Library app created by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints. I love the total accessability of the app, and it was wonderful to have in my Christianity class last semester in college, and is great for fast access in Sunday school or where ever I'm at. I believe you can freely download the Bible without being a church member. The app is also free. I know you were looking for something for on your Mac, but I thought you might be interested in this option as well if you had an iphone, or ipod touch. Re: iTunes iCloud
From what I read I understand it to say that you pay one flat fee per year, no matter how many albums you have. Dawn On Jun 7, 2011, at 2:26 PM, Shen wrote: I want to add to my previous email regarding iCloud in iTunes. The service for pushing your media content across all your devices will be available in iOS 5. As far as I can tell, iOS 5 will be available around September. As for the cloud, it is not exactly a cloud service like that of Amazon and Google. You do not have the ability to upload your content to a cloud, then stream it anywhere with your device. The actual storage of the content is still in your device, iPod, iPhone, iPad, etc. The only part that is considered a cloud is photos. Apple will store up to 1000 of your photos in a cloud storage. Is this confusing enough? Then, on top of this, syncing your content across your devices is only for iTunes purchases. If you have a CD collection that you ripped into iTunes, you will have to pay for iTunes Match. This is a service that will allow iTunes to identify the music you ripped from CDs, and match them with the iTunes equivalent. iTunes Match will cost you $25 a year. What I'm not sure is whether $25 is all you have to pay, then you get your music, or you have to pay separately for each album. This was not clear to me. So if you have been holding your breath in anticipation of Lion and iOS 5, you will have to hold it just a bit longer. -- Shen goalb...@gmail.com -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups MacVisionaries group. My continueing Itunes problems
Hi everyone, Well, I have fixed my original problem with adding my music to itunes on my mac. They were previously in WMA format, but I found a converter a few days ago and took care of that. Now the trouble is that they have the wrong file association I think... At least when I tried opening one of them, it wanted to open it with Preview, not Itunes... What can I do to fix this? Re: mac book
Hi, I just got my new Mac Book at the beginning of the month. *grin* I've always used Jaws or most recently NVDA once my Jaws demo ran out. I haven't had any trouble adapting to the new way of navigating websites. I actually enjoy it, most of the time. I have had occasional issues but those are to be expected learning a new operating system and screen reader. So far though it's going very well and I love my Mac! *grin* Good luck to you, Dawn On May 22, 2011, at 7:06 AM, gerry cook wrote: Hi everyone! My Itunes question
the subject line of Converting files to iTunes. The mp3 format is one of the standard file formats supported in iTunes, and you are not ripping the file from a CD or other format, nor are you trying to use a special version of mp3 encoding, such as the LAME encoder, to digitize your tracks. (Even that's possible in iTunes, incidentally). Possible things to check: is your mouse cursor on the link you want to download or view the context menu for (i.e., perform your right click in your words)? You can do this with VO-F5. I hear VoiceOver speak the number of the link (for the performer, title, issue source, and year listed), followed by the words clickable. Your results may depend on how your cursor tracking is set (e.g., you may have to route your mouse cursor to your VoiceOver cursor with VO-Command-F5), and whether you are navigating the web page in DOM mode or group mode. For a very few web pages with idiosyncratic HTML encoding, the main Blind Cool Tech web page being the prime example, you may have to interact with the link before you view it in either the context menu or use Option+Return to download. Note that you may have an easier time with some of these issues if you use a Magic TrackPad (or TrackPad Commander) to navigate. If you want to set up your Downloads folder in the Dock (provided there is one in your setup) to be easily viewable in Finder, you can also do that, and navigate to that folder to check downloads instead. You'd have to use the context menu (VO-Shift-M) and choose the menu options to display as a Folder instead of a Stack, and view content as List instead of Fan, Automatic, or Grid. You could also choose to sort the displayed files by Date Added instead of Name if you wanted to easily find the latest download from the dock. Each setting change would have to be applied one by one with a separate VO-Shift-M. HTH. Sometimes, the flexibility of this OS makes it more daunting.:)) Carolyn Well, the basic problem is that I don't really know what Chris wants to do, since his subject line is about converting (my emphasis) files to iTunes. I figured that if I told him how to QuickLook the file he could listen to the track and check that it is really one he wants to import into iTunes. The files at this repository have names like: cubs-cyl3768d.mp3 so if he is downloading in bulk, it can be hard to keep track of titles. The one good thing is that they are correctly tagged, so when they show up in iTunes they have names and artists. (The example track was a fiddle tune named Birlin' Reels that was recorded in 1910 and played by an artist named James Scott Skinner.) Also, since a lot of people read the list for related information, a question that we often get from people is how to Preview tracks without opening them and adding them to iTunes -- especially how to avoid adding them multiple times! So I figured that new users, especially, would find the QuickLook feature of interest. Incidentally, you can QuickLook PDF files, jpegs, and many other types of files, and you can QuickLook attachments to mail posts that you receive to decide whether you want to save them. It's a quick way of playing the file content. You can't edit or do detailed navigation within the file (like jumping to a certain point in a PDF or music file) to play out of sequence, because you haven't opened the file in an application. However, it is very low profile usage and convenient. HTH. Cheers, Esther On May 19, 2011, at 8:02 PM, Esther wrote: Hi Chris, I'm a little confused about what you are trying to do here. I went to the Cylinder Preservation web site (found with Google), and browsed their web site. They appear to have tracks stored as mp3 files. Since there is no right click on the Mac, I assume you are trying to bring up a contextual menu (VO-Shift-M), or else you just want to directly download the files to your computer, instead of playing them in your browser. If you want to download the linked file directly, you can press Option+Return when you are on the link you want, and you'll automatically force a download without having to find the option to Save Linked File in your context menu (or bring up the context menu at all). In this case, it will go to your default location for Safari Downloads which, if you have not changed the location in your Safari Preferences, is a folder named Downloads under your home directory. Depending on how your Mac is set up, you might have a Downloads folder in your dock, or you can check your Safari Downloads window by pressing Command-Option-L. If you navigate to the bottom of the window (VO-Fn-Right Arrow on the laptop), and interact with the group (VO-Shift-Down Arrow), you can monitor the size and progress of the download, and also VO-Space on Show in Finder once the Download is complete to bring up a Finder window with your downloaded file selected. Re: Say Goodbye to Skype, Microsoft just bought it for 8.5 billion
Hi Joe, I just got my new Mac last Thursday and am still in the process of learning how to use it. On a hunch, I didn't buy Microsoft Office for Mac. Reading what you say here about it, I'm very glad I made that choice. Somehow it doesn't surprise me at all that it isn't accessible.
