Prescription Labeling for Blind and Low Vision: Public hearings to determine our future!
*What:* The US Access Board Working Group on Accessible Prescription Labels is holding open meetings to determine best practices for labeling prescriptions for the blind and visually impaired. *When:* Monday, March 18 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm Eastern Time *Where:* Telephone 888-603-7094, passcode 6317703. Dial in any time during the meeting; the public comment period is anticipated to start between 4:15 and 4:30 pm Eastern time. *Why:* Prescription information should be accessible to everyone, regardless of vision condition. The board is not, at this time, considering codes that can be read by mobile devices such as the iPhone or Android and it is not considering mobile technology as an option for label reading or recording. We believe that this is an option that should be included in the recommendations because of its convenience, low cost of implementation, power and portability. We encourage you to find out more about this committee and to consider giving some input on the topic because the results almost certainly will determine how your prescriptions are labeled in the future. For more information, read on! *How does the Working Group affect you?* The US Access Board Working Group on Accessible Prescription Labels is holding hearings to determine best practices for labeling prescriptions for the blind and visually impaired. The working group is a public body and meetings are open to the public. So, if you want to participate and make your opinions known, you have a chance to do so! The next meeting is scheduled Monday, March 18 from 1:00pm to 5:00pm ET. The Access Board will be specifically discussing audio labeling of prescriptions. The document they are working from is here: http://www.access-board.gov/drug-labels/practices-summary.htm And the hearing will start with the line titled “*Practice of Providing Audible Labels -- Digital voice recorders attached to a prescription drug container”* The committee typically discusses their document and then saves the last 30 or 45 minutes for a “Public Forum” and open the phone lines for public comments. The dial-in number is 888-603-7094 and the pass code is 6317703. You can dial in any time. We'd like to encourage people who are interested in mobile solutions to attend the next meeting by phone and speak up for the option of including mobile technology as one of the audio options. We recommend that you prepare a short statement to read to the committee that says something to the effect: “My name is _ and my vision condition is . I use the iPhone and other mobile technology in my daily life *(give examples as to why it is useful*). I believe that the commit should include the use of labeling that can be read and voiced by mobile devices such as the Android or iPhone because (state your reason for wanting mobile technology included – we believe it is a useful solution because it means we don’t have to carry around a bulky reader or use a special recorder and can just use the same convenient prescription bottles that everyone else uses!) It is not all that common for us, as citizens, to be able to influence the course of legislation, but this is a great opportunity to speak up and say what *we* want and how *we* want it! *Using Labels Readable with Digital Technology* At this time, the committee is considering only existing solutions such as bottle recorders and ScriptTalk. We believe that it is in everyone’s best interest to understand that there is no single good solution to making prescription labels accessible and that the range of solutions should include the use of labels (QR code and other) that can be read by devices such as the iPad, iPod, Android or iPhone. Here is a sample pharmaceutical label that can be printed on a simple, inexpensive round label and fitted on the bottom of a standard 40ml prescription bottle. http://www.digit-eyes.com/graphics/pharma-see/sampleLabel1.png http://www.digit-eyes.com/graphics/pharma-see/sampleLabel1.png The code above can be scanned and voiced with any QR code scanning app on the iPhone, Android or other device that can read and voice QR codes. You can, for instance, read it with the free version of Digit-Eyes: https://appstore.com/digiteyeslite As shown in the sample label, the content can include personalized information about the prescription as well as a link to the authoritative source of information about the medicine in the bottle (in this case, a sample penicillin label, a link is included to the Medline Plus page for the specific formulation in the bottle.) http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/druginfo/meds/a685015.html The advantage of this type of labeling is straightforward: for people who have a phone that can scan codes, no bulky reader or awkward addition to their pill bottle is needed. Re: slightly OT: Digit-Eyes
The good news is that it is not $30 -- the price or the entire package was reduced to $19.95 earlier this year You can also buy just the part you need if you don't need the whole thing. If you want only one function (labeling), you can actually use the free version and make text labels; if you want to use audio recording, that is $9.99 and if you want just UPC recognition, that is also $9.99 If you have an iPhone 4 or 5 and there is not enough light, we use the flash that is build into the phone; if you have a 3gs, we warn you if there is not enough light to scan by. Re: Buying Digit-eyes
Hi Mei, I am sorry if this is confusing. There are two versions of Digit-Eyes; free and paid. And you can buy partial functionality (like just UPC scanning or just recording) - If you are buying the paid one, it should perform like any other purchasable app. - The free one just has a download button. We have modified the method for getting the partial version in the new release, but now to get it, just get the free version and scan the type of label you want (UPC or recordable). When you scan it, you'll be given the option to purchase. Lenses for the iPod Touch
When the iPod V4 (Touch) was released, the contrast resolution of the video system was good enough that it could be used for UPC and EAN bar code scanning with Digit-Eyes. Sadly, with the release of the later versions of iOS 4, this changed and we found that it had it become impossible to scan any but the very largest codes. One of our customers observed that it was possible to scan with the iPod when she used a magnifying glass, which set us to the task of evaluating iPod lenses and which got some surprising results. We got a set of three lenses online in a set: a 180-degree fish-eye lens, a macro lens and a wide-angle lens and we've tested with them extensively. Our customer was right -- a lens can greatly improve the capture on your iPod Touch. Re: language
Try settings - general - international You will find the settings for language, voice control, keyboards, regional format, etc. Note that it is common (and, at least technically, correct) for voicing browsers to use the language declaration in the HTML page. new iPad test results
We got our new iPad (3? whatever it is) on Friday and we've been testing this weekend. 1. It has a faster processor and the results are clearly evident on the performance of VoiceOver which is quicker and (it seems) more accurate). 2. The camera is greatly improved. That, combined with the faster processor is turning out to have exceptionally good capture results with Digit-Eyes. We are catching bar codes at distances that we've previously been unable to achieve and the speed of the processor really makes the app fast! 3. The camera does not have flash. This is, we feel a negative, although it seems to be quite good in low light conditions. 4. The zoom feature and the excellence of the display made this (for me) a very good magnifier. Using it in camera mode, I was able to easily expand small text to be comfortably readable. This is certainly going to be very useful for folks with low vision. All in all, it is an excellent product! As a result, we'll be releasing Digit-Eyes officially for this version of the iPad sometime in the next couple of weeks. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups MacVisionaries group. Digit-Eyes Released! Version for iPod Touch and upgrade for iPhone 4
We are delighted to announce the release of the version of Digit-Eyes that works on the camera-equipped iPod Touch and which more fully utilizes the features of the iPhone version 4. Here is the summary of changes: * operates on the camera-equipped iPod Touch; * uses the flash on the iPhone 4 when scanning in dark areas; * does not require the user to de-activate the screen curtain during use; * reads code 39 and code 128, the common forms of bar codes used for inventory tracking * operates in 12 languages and dialects in addition to English: Danish, French (Canada and France), German, Italian, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese (Brazil and Portugal), Spanish (Mexico and Spain) and Swedish As Davey notes: The exciting part about this development is that people who use Digit-Eyes now have choices about which equipment they want to buy. All too many times, we, as blind people, have just had one choice -- something anchored to the computer, something only provided by one company and the like. Suddenly, we have two choices for using the Digit-Eyes software -- one with the phone and one that just uses wi-fi or a wireless Internet connection. Choice is powerful! Ending Confusion in the Closet: Washable Digit-Eyes Labels
A lot of the people I met at the NFB and ACB conventions wanted to know about washable Digit-Eyes labels -- ones that could be used to permanently label their clothing. I'm delighted to say that we have found a label material that can repeatedly be washed and dried (including bleach) and that we've located a printer who can create the labels for us. Starting today, they are for sale in a pack of 50 on the website: http://www.digit-eyes.com/cgi-bin/item.fcgi?storeId=itemKey=1922500809 The labels are made of a strong, non-rippable vinyl. They have have a generous margin of white space around them to make it easy to sew them into garments. Once in place, all you do is scan them with the Digit- Eyes app on the iPhone and record the information you want about the garment. The next time you scan it, you'll hear your recording. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups MacVisionaries group. Freebie version of Digit-Eyes text label reader available
We've just released a version of the Digit-Eyes label reader that will read the text labels created on the Digit-Eyes website. This software lets people who do not need the functionality of UPC scanning or audio labels to create or read the text labels that are created by the full version of the product. Thus, if you are using the full version, but your sighted office mate or someone in your household needs to be able to read the Digit-Eyes bar code labels you've put on the files, they can simply download the free version and read the labels you've created. Since creating the labels is a free service on the Digit-Eyes website, they can also create text labels that you can read. Users can type up to 100 characters into a label field on our website, creating as many different ones as wished, print them off, and put them on anything and everything they can think of to label. Likewise, if you are wondering whether you'll be able to read labels with your phone, this is a great way to find out at no cost. To get a free copy, search 'Digit-Eyes' on the iTunes store and select the Lite version. Enjoy!
