Re: lion is pretty good

2011-10-17 Thread Priscilla Garces
I did get a ew adapter today at the apple store, but the only thing i do regret
is not putting the apple care plan. That was a pretty big mistake because i
could have saved myself 60 bucks from getting another adapter. I don't have
another backup cord because i can't be buying extra cords. they cost quite a
bit.
Other than that it's now fine.
I don't know how my chord died on me. it was working fine except that there was
a tare on the end of the cable but that's because my cat decided to play with
the cable and think it's a mouse that he can chase. Bad kitty! he tore the
cable alittle bit. now i'm going to be careful and put in the drawer when not
in use.
Does anyone know how i can wrap the cable without forcing the parts where both
the brick joins the cable to wear out?
I often put that together along with a lot of other things inside my mesenger
bag. the bag only has 2 pockets for a binder, computer and another one for all
else so i just throw some other stuff in like my recorder and keys and small
personal items. no wonder why my focus 40 blue doesn't fit in the bag. damn
that's the only con.

Thank you.

Re: Lion's pretty good

2011-10-16 Thread Priscilla Garces
well i haven't had any issues so far. the only problem i do have with lions is
when i have to correct stuff in other languages using pages and that it won't
read bulleted lists.
I also have problems when formating with pages so i choose to use text edit.
I think text edit is pretty good for my needs and is similar to pages.
The only reason why i got iWork's is because of the keynote software which i
haven't played with it much. but what's better in lion is the fact that i can
switch languages which i really like because i'm reading extensive materials in
spanish.
I do wish that voiceover changes languages when reading multilanguage
documents.Jaws changes voices when reading documents that are in both english
and spanish. But i have been having an unrelated problem, my charger stopped
working since this friday for some reason. when it chaerges my laptop, the plug
that magnetically connects to my laptop got burning hot, i couldn't touch it
because it was really hot.
I don't know why i am having this issue. i thought that the charger should last
more than 2 years at least. I'm currently a college student and need my laptop
for research. If i had a braille note that would have been good, but because of
the state's budget, they said a braille display was more cost effected which i
still liked because i can use that with my iPhone as a PDA.
I'm more concerned because i have a lot of assignments and need the laptop
obviously to do them. is there anything i should do in the future as a backup?
I can't always be going to the apple store since it's quite far from where i
live.

Thank you very much.

interacting with items using the focus 40 blue

2011-10-14 Thread Priscilla Garces
Hey all,
I would like to know the comands for interacting with voice over on the focus
40 blue.
I got the display yesterday, it was great. i never immagined it interacting
with voice over like a breeze once i pluged in the USB.
Anyway. how do i interact with tables with the braille display without using my
computer keyboard?
Does anyone happen to take the braille display with them in addition to the
laptop? I'm planning to do that, the only problem, it doesn't fit inside my
current messenger bag without the need of a backpack.
it's pretty slim but is horizontally long. other than that the display makes
reading easier and especially that the braille is smoother like paper. it sure
was a bit more than what i thought i'd expect. I at most expected at least a 32
cell display, but i guess the focus 40 blue was the cheaper option verses the
braille note.

thank you.

Re: Braille display

2011-09-24 Thread Priscilla Garces
Hello
I'm considering getting the focus 40 blu Braille display. Has anyone kno how
feels like if it's portable? I haven't felt one but I've heard it's like
reading Braille on regular paper is that true? I'm taking a couple courses
requiring extensive reading and especially editing in Spanish. I plan on taking
French too and think Braille will help me learn another language. can I use it
with lion on the mbp? Actually the state is provitamins me with one in addition
to other software like iris pro. Has anyone used read iris pro? What are the
comparisons between KurtzWeil 1000?
Thank you very much.

 for that
price. Add the cost of jaws on top of the price of either $400 at Walmart or
$600 at Best buy which comes out to at least from $1300-1500 assuming that you
get the standard version of jfw which costs about $900. That assumes you got
your computer within the price range of $400-600 whereas you get the mac, you
spend 1199 1 time but you get the screenreader included at no charge. no one
can beatt that. In fact, it's cheaper because if you get a discount you get the
mac for $1099 if you get the macbook pro, but if you can't afford that you can
get the smaller macbook air which is around 800 or even the ipad if you decide
to get something as a supplement for the pc. I got the mac for the reason
stated in thispost including the long term cost.

windows is still the main operating system in many workplaces because microsoft
office keeps being the main sourse of productivity where as the word processing
on the mac is not as feasable for some especially if you do a whole lot of
advanced formatting or editing such as making labels or very detailed
powerpoint presentations. But, i tried keynote and it outweighs powerpoint
although i wish it fixes some bugs with voice over but that's a minor
complaint. I don't do much in terms of formatting except write resumes or
essays and basic wordprocessing so that's not an issue. I just hope iwork fixes
some kinks with voiceover such as reading tables and slides and bullets. other
than that i'm pretty happy overall.
Anyone have any opinions you can talk about them off list or reply to the list,
whichever is better.

Thank you.

some kinks with voiceover such as reading tables and slides and bullets. other
than that i'm pretty happy overall.
Anyone have any opinions you can talk about them off list or reply to the list,
whichever is better.

Thank you.

USB modem

2011-07-27 Thread Priscilla Garces
Hey mac users,
I have a question about Portable USB modems.
Does anyone know if they are accessible for the blind? I'm planning to travel
outside the US and have to take my computer in the near future. I plan to
travel to Ecuador and I know that the internet rates are pretty high. I want to
avoid that by getting a USB modem that permits the computer to get satellite
internet and you only pay like $14 a month approximately. I knew this because I
have a friend in Honduras who is currently there for a missionary project and
recommended me to get one since it's cheaper in the long run. Does anyone know
if there are any accessible USB modems that can be configured by the blind and
work with the mac? Are they voice-over friendly? I hope I can go to Ecuador to
visit my family if that does happen.
Any concerns, please contact me.
 Thank you very much.

PS. I did research but there aren't many reviews in terms of accessibility in
terms of USB modems.
I've heard of the Tigo modem which my friend has but I don't know if it works
with the mac and is voice-over friendly.

getting additional voices in different languages

2011-07-23 Thread Priscilla Garces
Hello listers,
I am planning to study french at some point.
How do I go about getting additional voices in other languages besides english?
Sometimes I want to even read stuff in spanish?
Do you know if anyone has any success with the rosetta stone software?
I bought a french course but the CD are only audio and the book is obviously
not accessible because it's in print.
I would like to learn another foreign language, but for me to do that I would
like to know where I can get good voices that speak various languages?

Any feedback, please contact me. Thank you very much.

formatting and Voice-over

2011-06-23 Thread Priscilla Garces
Hey all listers,
Is there a way in which I can check formatting with voice over when I use
pages? I know that with Jaws you use Ctrl F in order to tell you the format of
the document or line.
What is the command for VO to check formatting?

Any questions, please contact me.
Thank you very much

alternative for accessing federal websites

2011-06-11 Thread Priscilla Garces
Hay listers,
Is there an alternative for accessing certain websites like some of the federal
web sites like USAjobs.gov? I ask because there are some job listings I am
applying for and some of the agencies have a message saying, "Note, this
browser is not supported for this website, for best results, please exit this
browser and use Internet Explorer." I had a PC but the laptop I have is now not
connecting to the internet. That laptop was issued by the school and I got to
keep it after graduation.
I don't know if the school has to put in a code only because i'm no longer a
student there.
Any questions or concerns, please contact me.
Thank you.

statement about microsoft's accessibility on the mac

2011-05-04 Thread Priscilla Garces

I did give some feedback on Microsoft's inaccessibility since I have tested the
Microsoft products on the mac. I bought the mac and before i did they let me
test the mac with Microsoft word and it was very inaccessible
I wrote the following statement:

"To Who May concern,
"I am very interested in purchasing your Office Suite for
The Macintosh platform. However, i understand your product is not
accessible as it is not compatible with VoiceOver which is the built in
Screen reader for the blind for OS X. I tried to use word as a test at the
apple store when I bought the mac and had to buy iworks2009 in order to
substitute Microsoft, but although the apple version is enough for my needs,
Microsoft Office suite is necessary for the work environment being that most
employers are offering Microsoft's products as part of the equipment for
employees. If you were to add support for
VoiceOver, this would result in thousands of Sales and more profits will be
gained. In addition, many people in the blind community who are already mac
users will also have the choice of either operating system. It is imperative
that Microsoft products become accessible on the mac platform. For this reason,
apple should step up and get Microsoft to consider the large gain in
profitability towards accessible features in the mac platform."

What do all of you think?
Any opinions are appreciated.
Thanks.

debating whether or not to extend my warrantee on the macbook pro

2011-04-27 Thread Priscilla Garces
Hey folks,
How are yo?
I have a few questions about the mackbook pro since I am kind of a newby to the
mac.
I got an email from the apple store saying that my 1 year warrantee for the mac
is about to expire next month.
I am debating wether or not I should get the apple care plan mostly because of
the cost.
I know that this piece of equipment is very expensive and serves all of the
needs I have.
I can't be anymore happier with the mac myself since I first got it. I'm still
learning a lot about the mac even though i've had it for 1 year.

What do you think about the apple care plan. Should I go ahead and pay the
$249$ for the extension of the warranty which is 2 years or should I just forgo
that? What are the benefits of the apple care plan? When is it necessary to
have the extended warrantee? Is there a payment plan in case I can't afford the
high cost of the warrantee extension?

Thank you very much, I really appreciate it.

Where do I go about downloading the software for docuscan+ for the mac?
Is there a direct link for that because I can't seem to find it when I go to

Thank you very much.

braille and voice over?

2011-04-16 Thread Priscilla Garces
Hey all listers,
I'm new to the Mac operating system being that I switched from windows after I
graduated from college.
What made me switch is because of the cost effectiveness in terms of
accessibility out of the box. When I used a PC I used a screen reader called
jaws for windows and these can run from the range of $600 to upgrade and $1000
to purchase the screen reader + the annual fee which is high in order to
maintain the SMA's. That is separate in addition to the cost of the hardware
itself based on research on the various costs of computers ranging from 400 to
$900 even more for quality computing. Another reason is the fact that tech
support is available for the computer in person and the time and inconvenience
in resolving the various troubles faced when using Jaws and the added fact that
you need sighted assistance which is not granted by phone. With Apple I can go
to the center which is near my house and have all of my computer problems and
even receive training on the accessibility depending on the knowledge of the
person who has experience with its use. That and many other reasons most of
them being financial and personal as well as the added fact that the state
refuses to pay for the upgrade or purchase of new software to perform the
appropriate tasks independently is the factor that made me consider buying the
mac being that I wanted to try something different. Hence the long story I have
questions regarding the use of braille displays and the mac as well as scanning
software that is accessible for mac users using voiceover.
Does anyone have experience using braille displays with the mac? If so, which
braille display do you use and what is your experiences with its ease of
reading, accessibility etc? Would the braille note be useful a braille
display? Which braille displays are cheaper, the braille note or a standalone
braille display? I have an old braille lite millennium, would that work with
the mac? Because if it does that would be great and I won't have to deal with
the commission refusing to purchase anything and deal with the stress of
fighting them to get what I really need. If not I understand the need for new
equipment which I need for grad school or work anyway.
Based on your experiences, which braille display or notetaker works better with
the mac? Also which scanning program works well with voice over based on
experience?

Any advise is appreciated.

Thank you very much.
