Wow, another example of apple over-advertising a function. The
documentation says nothing about only being able to send voice
messages to other apple users...what a bummer.

Thanks, I appreciate you taking the time to respond.

IOS 8.4 messaging question

2015-07-24 Thread Randy george
Hi Everyone,

Sorry, this is probably a stupid question but I'm hoping someone can
help me out. Just got an iPhone 6 and the user manual says that I can
send voice messages as well as text messages. I am able to get to the
voice aspect of the messaging if I compose a new message to someone,
however, if I already have an existing conversation going I have not
found any way to bring up the voice messaging feature. VO says to
double tap and hold the attach media button for fast options, but when
I do that nothing happens.

Also, a bug report for anyone interested...I set up my medical ID in
the health app, and ever since then anytime I do anything in the phone
app VO says "medical ID" everytime I tap or move to anywhere in the
app.

Thanks,
Randy

Re: [New post] Apple removing music downloading apps from App Store

2014-06-11 Thread Randy george
I usually don't chime in on these sorts of things but had a few
thoughts as I see both sides.

1. Sending multiple emails with short updates does tend to clutter up
an in-box and do take time to delete; especially for those of us who
travel for work and view/remove our email via our iPhone.
2. That being said, the information does tend to be interesting, so
perhaps a compromise can be reached?
3. Would it be possible to place all updates in a daily digest, as
opposed to sending them individually? Or perhaps an apple OS/IOS
update list serve could be created just for this purpose? I do tend
to view this list as a sort of tech-support list for blind users of
Mac products, not a list for every tidbit of "potential" information.
Remember, much of this information is rhumors, not verified
information.

Thanks,
Randy

[cfsp key="adsense_336x280"]"Apple appears to be removing many of the
popular music downloading apps from the iOS App Store, including those
that allowed users to obtain files from third-party file sharing
 sites,"
Richard Padilla reports for MacRumors. "The move is likely in an
 attempt
to push the iTunes Store and iTunes Radio, as well as to clean up the
App Store ahead of an overhaul in iOS 8."

"A search for the term 'music download' in the App Store displays a
message inviting users to try out iTunes Radio," Padilla reports.
"Previously, the same search would show results for a number of apps
that could download music and audio files from websites such as
Soundcloud and YouTube, with many appearing on the App Store's 'Top
 Charts' section."

Padilla reports, "Some developers have also noted that Apple has asked
them to remove audio downloading functionalities from their app,
 perhaps
 to prevent potential piracy."

Hi Alex,

Have tried your suggestions, and unless I'm doing something wrong, which is
definitely possible--I'm still not getting anywhere. I've tried every key
combination possible, but I can't get the system to make the mouse click that I
am used to hearing after the F5 trick...VO space isn't doing anything either.

Thanks for any other suggestions.

clickable items in safari

2014-05-29 Thread Randy George
Hi All,

I am attempting to navigate a page that has what voiceover is calling clickable
items--but when I try to click on them as I would a link nothing happens.
There are no links, just these frustrating clickable items.

If anyone knows a way to access these I would sure appreciate the assist.

I'm not sure I want archive though--i don't want to keep all of my messages, i

Not sure how I'm feeling about ios7 just yet. :)

Hi Alex,

Thanks so much--I am in the mail settings screen and do not see the disable
archive option anywhere; not in the main screen and not in the gmail screen.
there are a bunch of option buttons, but none of them say either archive or
disable archive.

Thanks again,

Question about mail in IOS7

2013-09-21 Thread Randy George
Hi Everyone,

I just upgraded my 4s to IOS7 and now when i am in mail I am unable to delete
an email by swiping down as I did before. The three options I am given now are
more, archive and activate item. Delete is not one of my options, even if I am
in edit mode.

Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong?

Thanks so much.

Question: where does mail go if you press the archive button in mail on the iPhone?

2013-08-25 Thread Randy George
I accidentally did this while a message I was reading was open and now I'm not
able to find it anywhere, both on my macbook as well as my iPhone. To make
matters worse I can't remember what the subject was so am not able to search
for it that way.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Seeing Eye GPS

Hey Matt,
Thanks for the info, how much is the second app you use? I guess I am a bit
confused as to what these apps do, I would think that a GPS app would be able
to give turn by turn directions.

Re: Seeing Eye GPS

2013-08-04 Thread Randy George
Here is a very basic and probably stupid question, but with blind Square, am I
able to enter a destination address and have it take me directly to that
address as a pedestrian? Or is it limited to intersections? An app that has
very precise pedestrian walking directions would be incredibly Useful for me
personally, as anyone who has ever lived in Philadelphia can quickly tell you,
the streets here are absolutely crazy. LOL
Thanks in advance,
Randy

Re: My comparison of the scene live GPS and BlindSquare

2013-07-07 Thread Randy George
Strange that good old Mikey May is still trying to squeeze every single penny
possible out of the blindness community--well, not strange at all, but very
sad. Especially if the app is inferior to blind square. I'll take $15 for
life any day. $70 a year is more than Garmin and all of the other major GPS
providers charge--as a Seeing Eye graduate I am let down by their business
decision.

Thank you, no, I have not tried that. I did not even know that was an option.
How would I go about doing that?

Has anyone ever used www.dau.mil?

2013-07-04 Thread Randy George
Hi Everyone,

As part of my position with the government I m required to take certain online
courses through www.dau.mil. These courses have activities/assessments that
must be completed prior to moving to the next step in the process. Most of the
information is completely accessible; however I have reached a point that I am
not able to get past. This is what happens.
I can not interact with the flash content at all; and from what I am being
told, it is just a multiple choice question with radial buttons.
I have updated both my flash player as well as my java.

I'm thinking this site may only be set up for internet explorer and netscape as
for some reason the military still thinks netscape is a viable option.

If this is the case, could anyone recommend a good tutorial on how to
successfully instal and use windows on a macbook pro running os 10?

Thanks so much.
Randy The page has three frames; two with information and the third is a flash
frame.
Upt until now this flash frame has been working fine; however, this one fram is
telling me "loading flash content" but nothing is happening.

Re: Using facebook on a mac

2013-02-26 Thread Randy George
Hey Jessica,

Have you tried updating your FB app on your IOS device? I no longer have the
issue with it that you were mentioning below and really only use my phone to
access FB. Granted, I'm not a huge user of FB, but I get on a few times a week
and have no issues with the app at all other than it sometimes not telling me
if there are comments to a news feed posting when there are actually comments.
I'm able to find my friends, the suggested people section works just fine, and
I even use FB messenger with my phone.

Feel free to write me off-list if you would like, I'd be happy to help if I
can. :)

Or I guess our workaround would be to partition your drive, boot your system as
windows, download jaws for Windows or window eyes, and fill out the forms that
way. Just another thought.

Yes, that's what I've been doing thus far. I guess as a new-to-mac user I kind
of fished around a bit and saw the different extensions.

Thanks so much again for your support.

Thank you so much for the information. I am a bit perplexed by this, because
like I said, when I create a new file, I am able to save it as a word document
extension.

I appreciate the tips though.

Re: changing document extensions in text edit

2013-02-07 Thread Randy George
that's strange, because when i open a new document and create it i definitely
have the option of saving it as a .DOC file. I've just taken to
copying/pasting in to a new file and reserving it as a .DOC when i need to say
upload to a website or something like that.

changing document extensions in text edit

2013-02-07 Thread Randy George
Hi Everyone,

Can anyone tell me how to change the extension of a file from (for example) a
RTF to a .DOC file? I don't want to change the document at all, just resave it
as a different format. I see where I can change the file name, but I don't see
any way to change the extension.

Thanks so much,
Randy

I feel like an idiot because the down arrow trick just simply is not working
for me. VO shift m does work, but no matter what I do, the down arrow followed
by left-right to get to the list of words does nothing for me.

Hi Jessica,

If I can figure this out I'll definitely let you know, because like you I am
able to fix a current word, but I'm still not able to, and have never been able
to get to this list of corrections. Same with my iPhone, I have no clue how to
do it there either. Alex and a few others have been really helpful, and for
this I am really thankful.

Hi All,

Still not having any luck arrowing down and then left/right to suggestions to
press enter on, and I found a word that said it had like 10 suggestions.
Running os10 with mountain lion, got it in november.

Thank you all so much for the suggestions.

thanks again, I see an audio menu but not a sounds menu. Is that what you're
referring to? Yeah, even when turning VO on and off repeatedly over the past
few months I've been with out these sounds. Very strange.

Thanks,

Re: auto corrections in mail messages and while typing

2013-02-02 Thread Randy George
Hi Alex,

Thank you so much for the assist, I really appreciate it. Your explanation has
been really helpful.

I was just testing it out, and let me give you an example of where I'm having
trouble. I was typing the word "really. When I got to the second l in really,
the sound for corrections came up so i decided to give it a go. VO gave me the
option of "re all" and no other options. Knowing full well that this was the
wrong choice i wanted to test it anyway so pressed space but nothing happened
other than vo changing the word from what i had originally typed to "real". So
i decided to try another word and chose to type the word option, only spelled
with an s instead of a t. as soon as I entered opts the noise came up and Vo
said ops sion, so i pressed space again, but instead of correcting the word it
just placed a space between the op and the sion (s i o n). I've gotten it to
work a few different times, but it still seems kinda sketchy to me.

Also, here's something else interesting, for the longest time I did not have
any (not sure if I'm calling these the right thing) system sounds other than my
mail notification and incoming messages; no audible feedback when entering
passwords, no sound when a webpage had fully loaded, no sound when the spelling
corrections options would pop up; and now, all of a sudden, they have returned.
I did not change voices or any options, I didn't even restart my computer.
Any thoughts/suggestions on this? Is there an option to turn these on and off?

Sorry for the long post and thanks in advance again.

auto corrections in mail messages and while typing

2013-02-02 Thread Randy George
hi gang,

How do I access the suggestions that mac/voiceover gives me when i have
incorrectly spelled a word? I hear the noise that indicates they are
available, and it says suggestions, but I have no idea how to get to them and
select the one I want.

Thanks a bunch,

Re: New list member with a mac question

2013-02-02 Thread Randy George
Hi Wendy,
I hope you're doing well. I'm fairly new to the MacWorld as well, however, I
have quite a bit of experience working on them. I recently bought a MacBook Pro
for the 14 inch display (non-retina display) with a 1 TB hard drive and eight
gigs of RAM and it is absolutely wonderful. I've had It for nearly 6 months
already and haven't noticed one single slowdown. I personally prefer the old
style of RAM and ROM versus flash memory, which you will get on a MacBook air.
The MacBook Pro also has a CD-ROM drive, which the MacBook Air will not. While
most programs are electronic these days, There are some that still come on
CD-ROM. And if you have a collection of DVDs, and would like to watch them on
your computer, you would have to purchase an extra DVD drive to watch them on a
MacBook air.
I hope all this information helps, please feel free to write me off list if you
have any other questions.

attaching pictures to mail messages

2013-02-01 Thread Randy George
Hi Gang,

I'm able to attach files such as documents to my mail messages, but am
absolutely failing when trying to attach pictures--can anyone give me some
pointers? Whenever I try to access them I am only able to find dates and
things like that, but only what I think are the dates in which I've synched my
phone with my macbook.

Any help would be really appreciated.

Randy

thank you all for your suggestions, they have all been helpful. I will

Re: safari and voiceover issue

2013-02-01 Thread Randy George
it is time consuming because I do literally hundreds to thousands of searches
daily as part of my consulting business, and even adding 2 seconds to every
search adds literally hours of time to what I am trying to accomplish. It is
frustrating because in my opinion, these sort of basic issues with voiceover
should be well in the past. I want to be able to depend on voiceover in a
professional capacity, but if it can't even handle basic web searches my
confidence falls through the floor.

Re: safari and voiceover issue

2013-02-01 Thread Randy George
Hi there,

That's the thing, the page is seemingly not coming up at all. if i wouldn't
reload voiceover it continually tells me that I am still on the google search
page when I'm in fact on the page that I meant to go to. This is a brand new
issue for me, as pages have always loaded fine from google and all other sites.
command + { is not working at all as a back function unless I again unload and
reload voiceover, which is to me a time consuming and frustrating task as this
is a brand-new macbook.

thanks,
randy

safari and voiceover issue

2013-02-01 Thread Randy George
Hi Everyone,

With in the past day or so I've begun having issues with voiceover and safari.
I'll try to explain in as few words as possible.

I will do a google search, which will work fine.
When I press the link I want, seemingly nothing happens, even though I have a
great wifi connection and other pages load just fine. When I read the link I
have just clicked on voiceover reads something like "url"
If I turn voiceover off and then back on again, I discover that I have in fact
been taken to the page I wanted to navigate to.
If I want to use the "back" arrow to go back to google, this does not work at
all and I am forced to use the address bar to go back to google where I have to
redo the entire search.
I have both rebooted as well as completely shut down my system and done a
reboot. Apple tells me that I have no available updates.

Has anyone else experienced this, and if so, how did you overcome the issue?
Does anyone else have any suggestions?

Thanks in advance,
Randy

Re: Time Machine Backups Are a good Thing

be slightly careful with dropbox, i've had files magically vanish in the past.
I still feel that an external hard drive that's in no way networked as to avoid
any possibility of a virus is the best way to go.

 Hi Cheryl.
First, how far have you gone in this process? If you have not already
started sending through your state's web site, you may be able to send
both your federal and state at the same time. Although there are some
issues with accessibility which I can further explain if you need to know,
I have been using Tax Act at taxact.com for the first time this year. I
finally figured the best way do it to make the process work better.

If, however, you have gone far enough in the process where you're ready to
send in the papers, it sounds like you could scan them and send them.
However, I for one would be a little skeptical about doing that because it
would be difficult if not impossible for you to check the accuracy of what
you sent in. I guess our sighted friends get to look at the image before
they send it in. (The state should be yelled at for doing it this way
because it's not the best accessibility choice. It's been my experience,
as a former blind IRS employee, that the federal systems are usually more
accessible than the state's. At least that true for Texas.)

If you use a web site like taxact.com however, you can type in the W-2
information yourself so that, although it's a pain to edit, you can do it
if you make a mistake. If you get all the information together first so
that you can input it all at once, the process is easier. Presumably you
can do the same with the state information although I have not tried it
since Texas doesn't have a state income tax. But I notice there is a
choice for state questions and answers for putting in the information.

I hope all this makes sense. If I can help you further, please ask.

 Regards,
 Gigi

attaching photos in mail

2013-01-27 Thread Randy George
hi everyone,

i guess this is another silly question, but how do i go about attaching photos
to mail messages? i'm able to attach documents just fine, but when ever I try
to access my photos folder, voiceover stops working in the same manner in which
it does when i am accessing documents and videos and things like that. even
when i go to my home folder and go in to photos that way i'm not able to select
a specific photo, all i'm able to find are dates--i'm assuming these are dates
in which my photo library was updated?

Any help would be really appreciated.

Thanks,
Randy

Hi Kristi,
I'm not sure if anybody recommended this or not, but this is what I did when I
jailbroke my old iPhone. There are lots of stores around most cities that will
be happy to jailbreak your phone for you. It cost me between 20 and 30 bucks,
and it was totally worth it because it only took them about 10 minutes and
every thing went extremely smoothly. If you just google jailbreak iPhone and
your ZIP Code, and number of stores should come up. Of course you're able to do
it yourself, but I would rather somebody do it who has done it hundreds or
thousands of times.
I hope this helps,

Re: Stopping VO from saying, Return, new line.

2013-01-19 Thread Randy George
Interesting, mine doesn't say "return" it just says new line, which I like as I
like knowing the formatting of the message or page or content I'm reviewing.
Do you have it set to read lines?

Re: Question about Adobe Acrobat Reader

2013-01-15 Thread Randy George
Back when I was a PC user I had found an electronic document scanning program
which was free and which did virtually the same tasks; I wish that I could
remember it's name now. lol It would take a scanned image and run an OCR on it
and produce a document which was easily read with a screen reader.

Thanks for the suggestion

Question about Adobe Acrobat Reader

2013-01-15 Thread Randy George
Hi Again,

I just downloaded and installed Adobe Acrobat Reader for IOS 10 Mountain Lion
so that I could read some docs emailed to me pertaining to a job I need to take
care of. When I open the file in Adobe (I've set it as my default PDF viewer),
all I seem to be able to read when I interact with the viewer pain is the
document name; does this mean that the document is simply a scanned image that
was converted in to a PDF, or is there some magical command that I need to do
yet?

Thanks so much for any help, this group is proving to be most helpful.

links with in headers

2013-01-15 Thread Randy George
Hi All,

Quick question: How do I click a link that is found with in a header? I can
get to the link, but do not seem to be able to click on the link. Do I need to
just copy and paste the link in to the address bar? I just figured there would
be an easier solution to this delema.

Thanks in advance,
Randy

Re: Accessibility of protools

2013-01-14 Thread Randy George
Hi There,

I've done multi-track editing with PT and have found it to be very accessible
with the exception of a few mixing plugins. This was primarily PT 10, PT 7-9
seemed to work very well with voiceover.
