It is interesting that the majority of my ‘invalid locations’ was music I purchased from iTunes. I always wondered what ‘Album is a compilation of various artists I uncheckd “Album is a compilation of various artists’ and Everything with an Album artist was grouped. Hi Angus, Two things to consider. If the song is in from Apple Music, as opposed to your own purchased content, then there may be problems messing with some of the tagging. Second, if something is within the Compilations folder, then there is a box that is checked within the Details tab of the Info for that song. So, when this item is checked, no matter what you do, it will stay within the Compilations folder. The organizational structure within iTunes will allow you to uncheck that box for a single song, or, if you wish, the entire album. Once that box is unchecked, and if you have the checkbox checked to keep your iTunes Music Library organized, then the song will be automatically moved out of the Compilations folder. For example, consider the following: The Circle of Life sung by Carmen Twilly, written by Elton John from the Soundtrack for the Original Motion Picture, The Lion King is part of a compilation because there are various artists on the soundtrack. With the "This is part of a Compilation of Artists" checkbox checked, you would find the song in the Compilations folder under the album title "The Lion King, Original Motion Picture Soundtrack". If I were to uncheck that box, then press OK in the Get Info dialog, the song would therefore be moved out of the Compilations folder into a Carmen Twilly folder outside the Compilations folder. Even though Elton John is the Songwriter, that part of the tagging is ignored in the Finder organization structure. Only the Artist, then Album, then Song title is of concern in that structure. Keeping all this in mind, in your case, you should be able to uncheck the checkbox related to Compilations in the Details area of the Get Info dialog for Jimmy Hendrix, and if the Album info is entered exactly the same as the album title you wish it to actually be placed in, it should do it for you. Tim Thank you. I ended up doing one song at a time. When I encountered “invalid location’, I typed the comma, I was asked to locate the song. I got rid of nearly 400 ‘invalid locations’. I was always asked to find files and this did not work. hi, Two things to mention here. First, the File tab is not an editable tab. That is, the File tab simply tells you the location of the file and some details regarding its file type for informational purposes. the Details tab is where tags can be modified. If you don't care to go through all 1100 songs individually, there is a method by which iTunes will attempt to find all the invalid location songs. To do so: 1. Open iTunes. 2. Press cmd-comma to open iTunes Press. 3. Interact with the Toolbar and select the Advanced tab. 4. Uncheck both "Keep iTunes Music folder organized" and "Copy files to iTunes when importing". 5. Press OK and quit iTunes. 6. Re-open iTunes and locate one of your "invalid location" songs and try to play it. iTunes should ask if you want to try to find this song. Answer "yes" and locate it. Once you locate that one, iTunes should ask if you would like it to see if it can find any other invalid location songs for you. Let iTunes do this and it should do a reasonable job finding most of the songs that have an invalid location. If it doesn't find them all, quit iTunes and re-open it, and it will usually start the process again and find the remaining ones. At least it should drastically reduce the number of invalid location songs so you don't need to go through your entire iTunes Library. Once they've been located, go back into iTunes Prefs and re-check the boxes that you unchecked earlier. Note, it is important not to manually mess with the locations of iTunes media within the Finder. If you wish to have something in a different location, change it from within iTunes Prefs in the Details pane. FYI, iTunes uses the Artist, Album and Song title when organizing itself, so if you wish something to be relocated, then modify the information in those fields. Also, if the "Part of a Compilation" item is checked, things usually are placed in the Compilations folder then subsequently organized by Artist etc. HTH. Later... John When I do a CMD I on a song in the Library list of songs, I get gthe artistt, album, song and a list of tabs. The Tabs are Details, Art work, Lyrics, soorting and File. File only allows me to read and not edit. Ihave started to go through the list one song at a time. And trying to play and then locate the song that is labeled ‘invalid location’. Every time I play the song 'That Little Old Groove Maker', the song goes to MacIntosh HD/Users/Madkinnon/Music/iTunes/iTunes Media/Music/Compilations/West Coast Seattle Boy - The Jimi Hendrix Anthology, Disc 1. I would like to keep the song in my Jimi Hendrix folder at MacIntosh HD/Users/Madkinnon/Music/iTunes/iTunes Media/Music/Jimi Hendrix/West Coast Seattle Boy - The Jimi Hendrix Anthology, Disc 1.
