Itunes libraries

2015-01-05 Thread Stacey Robinson
Hi all,
I have two iTunes libraries on my mac running lion.
How can I combine them so that everything is in one library?
Step by step instructions are greatly appreciated.

Have a blessed day.

Re: How to sync two iTunes Libraries?

2014-05-05 Thread Gabriele Battaglia
Ciao Kayaker, yes, I think you centered the question at 100%.

The idea to have the whole library on a NAS it sounds cool to me, even thought
I will loose its portability.

Did you mean I would access it with just one computer at a time?
So: if I'm listening music with MBP and I open iTunes on the iMac, I will
receive an error cause the second computer can't access the shared library?

I'm also considering the idea to subscribe one year of iTunes Match but the
weird is that you must continue to pay year after year, in order to keep them
synced.

Anyway, thank you for your kind answer.

Re: How to sync two iTunes Libraries?

2014-05-05 Thread Kayaker
Hi,

Short answer is no. You cannot easily keep a iTunes library synched across two
computers.

I know home sharing was suggested, but that is sharing, not synching.

The two closest work arounds for this that I know of are these:
1. Use a library on a NAS, that both computers use. Lots of problems here in
that only one can write to the library at a time. Works best if you are doing
this and can only open it from one computer at a time. Of course, this means
your library isn't portable, since it lives on your network.
2. Use a copy or synch utility like carbon copy cloner or another app to synch
your music folder between the two computers on a scheduled basis. This assumes
you have iTunes manage your music so everything is in that folder. You'll want
to keep latest version dates on items as the copy rule.

But as for iTunes, it was never designed to do this and there's no nice
solution.

Good luck.

Re: How to sync two iTunes Libraries?

2014-05-05 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

homeSharing doesn't really just sync automatically. It requires you to go into
the HomeShared Library of the other computer, telling it to show items not on
this computer, then importing those over to the computer you're sitting at.
You can access the other HomeShared Library by pressing VO-space on the "Music"
pop-up menu just to the right of the Search field. When you navigate through
that pop-over, you'll see the other HomeShared Library that you can access.
Finish one computer then do the same for the other and the media should all
reside on both machines. In the future, when you open iTunes, it should poll
for other HomeShare computers and copy over purchased media.

Remember, this is not a total sync, it will not sync playlists and such, this
sort of syncing requires a subscription to iTunes Match, although iTunes Match
is only for your music library, it does not do anything with your other media.
There are other rather messy ways of forcing your iTunes Library to be on one
machine and attempting to share it with others, but this can be problematic
when you attempt to run iTunes from outside your Home network.

Re: How to sync two iTunes Libraries?

2014-05-05 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

HomeSharing is found under the File menu. When you turn on HomeSharing, you
must use the same AppleID on both machines and they must also both be on the
same network subnet to be visible to each other. There are settings within the
HomeSharing pane that tell iTunes to look at other computers with HomeSharing
turned on for new music, apps and other iTunes media for syncing purposes. You
can use HomeSharing to stream media from the other computer and/or copy that
same media between computers. HomeSharing is also the protocol used by the
Apple TV to stream media from various computers in your network.

HTH.

Hi,

When you have HomeSharing enabled on both machines, you can make it so that
they check each others Libraries for new purchases and sync. Or, you could use
the iTunes Match service through Apple which will also maintain synced
playlists along with all your music.

As has been suggested, I have one library for 4 iOS devices, all have different
sync profiles in terms of what is and what is not synced.

Simply connect your iOS devices all at the same time and manually manage the

Re: Changing between itunes libraries.

2012-10-19 Thread Alex Hall
Select your iOS device from the sources list, select the music radio button,
then find and select the "manually manage music" option. You should now see a
list of artists, one of albums, and one of playlists, each with a checkbox next
to it. Check only the items you want synced and then sync. You might want to
create a playlist called "iPad music", then select only that playlist to sync
with your iPad. Do the same for your iPhone, and you need only modify the
playlists in iTunes and then sync to change the music placed on your iOS
devices. I hope this made sense.

Re: iTunes libraries

2012-09-16 Thread Esther
Hi Bill, Nick, and Others,

To move your iTunes library contents to another hard drive, the best
way of handling this is by using the "Organize library…" option under
the "Library" submenu in the "File" menu on the iTunes menu bar. This
step is taken after you designate the new location for your iTunes
library using the Advanced pane of iTunes preferences, as Nic
outlined.

The most complete discussion of this process, including all the most
common wrong ways that people use to do this, is given in the iLounge
tutorial guide on "Transferring your iTunes Library" from November
2011. It also explains the differences between dealing with the
database files and the data content in iTunes:

In case that long link breaks, here's a shortened link to the same
page:

This question was recently asked on the mac-access list, and I've
excerpted this information from my reply in the Mail Archive post for
that list, linked below:
• Re: iTunes Media Folder (September 12, 2012)
http://www.mail-archive.com/mac-access%40mac-access.net/msg12950.html
That post links to an earlier post to the mac-access list that goes
into considerably more detail explaining the sections of the article
that apply specifically to moving an existing library to an external
hard drive:
• Moving iTunes library to an external drive [was Re: Itunes question]
(February 6, 2012)
http://www.mail-archive.com/mac-access%40mac-access.net/msg07714.html

HTH. I tried looking for a similar post in the macvisionaries
archives, but I couldn't find any explanations that were as complete
or up to date. However, in general you can find tutorials on various
subjects relating to iTunes at the iLounge site:
http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/articles/tutorials/

When you read the individual links, remember to use Safari reader
(Command-Shift-R) after activating the link for each article.

Cheers,

Esther

Re: iTunes libraries

2012-09-16 Thread Nicholas Parsons
I'm not entirely sure, but you could try the following:

1. Delete your entire current library of music and movies, but do not send the
files to the trash.

2. In preferences, in the advanced pane, select the new location you'd like to
use for your iTunes Media library (e.g. an external disc).

3. Either
(a) Copy the Music and Movies folders from your iTunes Media Library folder to
the Automatically Add to iTunes folder in the new iTunes Media folder on your
external HD;
or
(b) Ensure the "copy music files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library"
option in the advanced pane of iTunes preferences is checked, and then go to
file > add to library, and add your old Music and Movies folders to your iTunes
library.

4. Once you've re-added all your music and movies to iTunes by one of the
methods in point 3 you could delete the Music and Movies folders from your old
iTunes Media folder and then empty trash to free up space.

You should probably create a back up duplicate of your Mac before trying this
in case it works out badly.

All the best and hope some of this helped.

I know I can copy the two folders movies and music to a different drive, and

streaming. Just make sure that the files are unprotected files and you should
be fine.

accessing iTunes libraries/content without iTUnes running

2011-01-04 Thread Scott Howell
All,

I have been trying to dig up information, which would enable me to stream
movies and the like over my network to my Apple TV or other Macs on the
network. I wanted to avoid leaving a machine up if possible, but perhaps I will
have no options.
I have heard there are NAS devices that will allow you to stream audio by
having machines access the iTunes library that lives on the NAS and the NAS
acts as an iTunes server. However, apparently this really only applies to audio
and not video. My goal is to put all my DVDs on the network and make it
available to my family (those in my house of course). If I have to use a
machine, has anyone tried using Leopard to pull this off running iTunes? I have
an iMac G5 sitting here that would do the job for the most part. I might even
by compressing the movies get most all on the internal drive. I do not recall,
but I also believe iTunes has to be running as well, is that correct?

Thanks,
Scott
