Hi all, Just a thought, but does anyone know if apple is still pushing out security updates for sl? I have not hurd anything abourt them not doing so. I did receive a security update a few weeks ago, but just wondering as I do not have the ram to run lion on this mac mini 2009. Re: Mac Mini from 2007 - How can I use it?
Hi, No you wouldn't be able to use the RAM from a 2010 model unit on your 2007 model. They have different speeds of RAM. I'd up it to 2 GB as RAM for that unit would probably cost less than $50 to upgrade. You could use it as a regular workstation with SL or I've heard of many folks using their Mini as a sort of Media server and even connecting them to their TV. Later... Re: Mac Mini from 2007 - How can I use it?
When I used the scan tool on crucial, it said I could only upgrade it to 2gb of ram. Also, if I remember correctly it isn't in the list of ML-compatible computers. You might be able to do it; I thought about trying it but I think it would be on the edge as far as workability in ML even if you did manage to install it. This is the mid-2007 mini I am referring to. But if you do get ML to run decently on it, I'd be interested in hearing. -- Cheryl May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable to You, Lord, my rock and my Redeemer. Put Linux on it! LOL! NO, I'm just kidding. Seriously, yes, you probably could run ML if you upped the ram a bit. Thanks much. Re: Mac Mini from 2007 - How can I use it?
if you put it up to 2gb, you could put Lion on it but not Mountain Lion. Then you can just use it as an extra. I have a mid-2007 one myself but it has a problem with not always wanting to start; I may break down and get the logic board replaced because I have a friend who really needs a computer. I know before Mountain Lion came out people were looking for computers that would run Snow Leopard but Mountain Lion probably alleviated that somewhat. I read an article though that warned of the dangers of running old OSes once there aren't any more security updates. I hate letting go of old computers; I always try to find something to do with them. I have two old Thinkpad T23s and a Thinkpad t61 sitting here running linux and yes, you could run linux on your mini. It always seems sort of wrong to me to get rid of a machine that is still working so I either keep using them or I try to find homes for them with people who understand that they are already very used and there are no guarantees. -- Cheryl May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable to You, Lord, my rock and my Redeemer.
