RE: In the market for a new laptop- your advice

2019-07-26 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi I'm not braille user so I don't have a braille embosser to play with.

What I can say is that you need to tell the VM device to take ownership of the
embosser / printer each time it is connected.

And then I'd assume you would need to install appropriate drivers for the
device.

The connection method was USB. I recall the issue being in the setup of the
embosser. In order to use the embosser, one has to setup an imaginary printer
first and then somehow trick the computer to print to the embosser by going
through this imaginary printer setup. I’m definitely distorting all the details
here- It was so long ago, I don’t recollect the exact details but I know it was
somewhere along this line. And I also know for a fact that on my bootcamp
partition the process would work just fine.

Sorry for the inexact description. Thanks for all your input though.

All best,
Ibraheem

Hey Ibrahim,

I have no idea if that issue has been addressed, but if you find out, I'd love
to know the answer. I'd love to get down to just one computer some day.

RE: In the market for a new laptop- your advice

2019-07-24 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi Ibraheem

Really there isn't a lot to choose from these days with the mac computers,

 My suggestion would be
At least 16GB ram,
And a minimum 512GB SSD
The later the mac book be it an air or a pro the better as you will get a
longer life from it than an earlier device.

I did look at a 2017 Mac book air which had 8GB ram and 512GB SSD and an i7
2.2GHz processor which would be a great little machine but wont take on all of
the newer developments in mac os Catalina

But the only thing I can suggest is avoid any mac book pro with the touch bar,
and try to stick to a machine later than 2017 if possible.

Oh and remember that all the new mac book models have USB-C both for power and
external device connection.

And don't look at the Mac Book 12 inch devices as they are to under powered.

Good luck.

Hey Simon,

thanks for the suggestion. I’ll look into the refurbished models. Are there any
specs I should strongly consider when trying to find the best machine to
accomplish what I need with a virtual machine and bootcamp? I’m a little out of
touch with tech specs and any advice you have on this is deeply appreciated.
Ideas like which processes or how much ram is ideal for a smooth experience is
what I’m looking to know more about.

Kindly,
Ibraheem

already owned Duxbury and had a PC, I've just stuck with that.

Brailleblaster was Re: In the market for a new laptop- your advice

2019-07-24 Thread Erik Burggraaf
Hi Donna,Have you experimented with APH brailleblaster? It served me well
on windows in the days when it was developed by abilitysoft, but I had a
hard time with it on mac. Since APH took over development I haven't had
embossers to experiment with and have always been curious to whether they
made it viable or not.

Index onborded the translation process a few years ago and became entirely
platform agnostic, but software development at index has never been a
strong suit. It's entirely the right idea, I just wonder how well executed
it is.

Either way, there are options to give duxbury a run for their money,
especially for straight braille translation.

Interested to know if you've experienced any of it and how well you liked it.

Best,

Erik

Another thing that you might want to know is the cost of Duxbury for Mac.
I've wanted it since it came out, but when I learned the cost, decided to

Good luck with your decision.

Re: In the market for a new laptop- your advice

2019-07-24 Thread Ibraheem Fakir
Hey Simon,

thanks for the suggestion.

Kindly,
Ibraheem

Re: In the market for a new laptop- your advice

2019-07-24 Thread Ibraheem Fakir
Hey Donna,

Thankfully, I have a windows copy of Duxbury available. I recall in the past
trying to emboss from a virtual machine using duxbury and running into issues
with my mac not being able to detect the embosser. The only fix was to install
windows on a bootcamp partition rather than a virtual machine which worked
well. Wondering if that bug was fixed and whether one can now emboss out of the
virtual machine.

Thank you so much!
All best,
Ibraheem

RE: In the market for a new laptop- your advice

2019-07-24 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi Petrus,

I don't believe apple have windows drivers to deal with the touch bar is part
of the issue,
Most likely more they don't want windows using their touch bar tech,

Either way yes I have heard the same.

 As for the keyboard,
Yeah really struggling to get use to it,
But it's very slowly growing on me.

2019-07-24 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi Ibraheem

Yes I have also as petrus said heard this about the touch bar models of Mac
Book Pro.

Note this is now all Mac Book Pro models both 13 and 15inch as the newly
released Mac Book Pro range a couple of weeks ago have replaced the mac book
pro models with out the touch bar, or simply put the entry level mac book pros.

But apple do have refurbished devices listed on their websites so it may be
worth checking that out for a 2017 or 2018 model pro without touch bar,

That's where I got my 13inch pro from .

RE: In the market for a new laptop- your advice

2019-07-24 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi Ibraheem

Interesting requirements

I've just recently been through the same thing finding a machine that would
work for me in both cases,
Windows through Bootcamp and Mac OS of course.

I managed to get a refurbished Mac Book pro 2017 13 inch with the specs I
wanted from the apple website under refurbished computers,

Might be worth having a look at that list as well.

With the currently listed new machines from apple the Newly released Mac Book
Pro's only have the ttouch bar and therefore don't work well with windows both
in bootcamp or a virtual machine,

I've not tried this myself but it's what I've been advised of by a number of
people both technictions and users of mac products.

Again look in to refurbished devices of the 2018 or older models for the mac
book pros.

As for the mac book air,
Yeah the new ones are nice but have the butterfly keyboard which I personally
am not a fan of,

But they do have up to 16GB ram
A 1.5TB SSD
And use USB-C as the connection type for both external devices and charging.

I personally question the processor which was a 1.6GHz dual core processor
although an 8th gen I believe so should still have good power to run windows.
But it is probably the better machine to look at due to not having the touch
bar

Depending on what it is you wish to do I personally had as my previous Mac
book air,
8GB ram and 512GB SSD
And at the time an upgraded processor to the I7 available

And it's worked great for 6 years.

The air is cheaper and smaller form factor but will give you the benefits of
the upcoming Mac OS 10.15.x
Which will also assist you.

Hope this helps.

Hey group,

Hope you’re all well! I’m in the market for a new Apple laptop, looking for
something that can run windows jaws and Duxbury. Saw the MacBook Pro and the
MacBook Aire posted online, and unsure if the higher end of the MacBook Aire is
fit to do the job or if the MacBook Pro is the better option here. Any
suggestions?

I’m looking to run windows on either Boot Camp or virtual hard drive, also
looking for suggestions on this set up. All input is deeply appreciated.

All best,
Ibraheem

Hey,I actually didn’t know that. I wonder why that is. I also haven’t had a

Re: In the market for a new laptop- your advice

2019-07-23 Thread 'Donna Goodin' via MacVisionaries
Hi Ibrahim,

Erik is probably right about virtualization, but I bought a MacBook Pro in
2017, after using an Air for eight years prior, and I really miss the light
weight and portability of the Air. the Pros are nice, and still pretty
portable, but the Air really comes out ahead in my opinion, and it does a good
job for the things I do. If I were going to make that decision again, I'd go
with the Air.

Another thing that you might want to know is the cost of Duxbury for Mac. I've
wanted it since it came out, but when I learned the cost, decided to just keep
running it under Windows. The price tag on Duxbury for Mac is $700.

Good luck with your decision.
Cheers,
Donna

Re: In the market for a new laptop, your advice?

2019-07-23 Thread Erik Burggraaf
I think any modern apple device will be fine if you want bootcamp windows,
but I would still recommend a pro model with solid state and upgraded ram
for virtualization. Fusion really seems to kick the crap out of baseline
models in my experience.

Erik

Hardware wise the computer is perfect.

It's just a question of productivity.

I think the best idea agreed on unanimously by the list is to set up a
Boot Camp or VM environment and use that for Office and keep OS X for
audio applications and recording podcasts.

Thanks Sabahattin.

To get something that even comes close to this Mac on the PC I'd have to
spend quite a bit.

Boot Camp might be the way to go.

This way I'd get the productivity and still keep OS X around for
recording podcasts and what not.

On 11/2/2015 11:19 AM, Sabahattin Gucukoglu wrote:

Hi Sadam,

As I see it, the main reason to get a Mac is OS X. Yes, you can get a PC and
save money, but Apple does design a superb combo of hardware and software, and
if you get a Mac, you can use it regardless of whether or not you get Windows.
You also get a nice, accessible safety net environment to use, and it’s easier
to work with OS X on Mac hardware than on any other platform even if you later
choose to use OS X as your secondary OS. But it’s ultimately up to you.

If you’re sticking with your Mac, then your options are virtualisation with
VMWare Fusion or BootCamp. Virtualisation works for most light applications
and is fairly easy to do, and BootCamp gives you full performance but requires
you reboot into Windows to use it. Office, at least, would be fine in a
virtual machine.

Although Apple hardware’s relationship with Windows can best be described as
temperamental cordiality, it does work very well. Like others have said here,
that MacBook that you have is really quite splendid and doesn’t yet need
replacement, although as with all current Retina Macs it will be continuing
without further upgrades until it reaches EOL. While fiddly, nothing prevents
you installing Windows on it and using it exclusively as a Windows box, and it
might be your only option when Apple stops supporting OS X on your machine. If
you are planning on this route now, let us know and I can outline the
procedure. In this way you will not lose your investment in hardware and will
probably get the best experience possible for Windows. Win win. Some would
say I was irrational, but I’d think that option was preferable even if I stop
using OS X altogether, because Apple hardware (especially notebooks) is really
very good, and a long-term investment, regardless of its quirks.

For myself, my MacBook Pro 2014 is now running Windows 8.1 exclusively, and I’m
quite enjoying it. Although using Windows reminds me painfully of why I
switched to Mac in the first place, with all that configuring and tweaking it
needs just to be useful, it does work, and it shines with a powerful light.
It’s too soon to convert my iMac, but I think Apple ultimately made the best
compromise in BootCamp for modern versions of Windows. Modern Windows is very
large, has good hardware support, delivers good speeds, and is difficult to
back up from outside Windows itself, so putting it in a partition and booting
it is really a good idea. The worst part about BootCamp is getting the bugger
installed. But there’s a preinstallation environment with NVDA that talks for
getting the installation going, and if you know what you’re doing, you can use
it to partition and install a dual-boot Windows install. This I will be doing
with my iMac once I have established what software I will be using in Windows.
Oh, and yes, browsing the web actually works in Windows. :)

So, in summary, if you have determined that the majority or most common of your
OS X apps are not meeting your needs, you probably want BootCamp. But, if you
like OS X and simply want a nice insulated Windows environment, you can use
virtualisation to get access to just those apps, like Office.

Cheers,
Sabahattin

Nothing wrong with the laptop per say.

It's just a question about productivity.

Given responses so far, my best and easiest that would be Boot Camp or a VM.

Re: New laptop.

2015-11-01 Thread Sabahattin Gucukoglu

Hi. Given the amount of ram, processor speed, and the ssd, you should
be having no issues even with intensive multi tasking.

Have you ran any diagnostic utilities? If so, has anything come up?

I did have a stock mac book pro with an ssd develop an issue and it
turned out to be the ssd although it's rare that they have issues. The
apple store I had it repaired through said they never see issues with
their ssds. I guess I was the unlucky one!

The CPU is 2.5 GHz 512GB Flash storage and 8GB of RAM.

Back when I picked it up I was doing some podcast work and wanted a fairly

I just want the new PC to do complex office documents and number crunching for
work purposes.

I do currently use Boot Camp and NVDA in the office.

I had a play around with pages and was actually pleasantly surprised that I'm

Learning that maybe an option.

This computer did cost me $2300 so replacing it would be an absolute last

That's an idea.

Except for Office stuff I don't actually mind the Mac OS.

A cheap Windows machine with NVDA might just do the trick. ) Spending
hundreds for a JAWS upgrade seems crazy(.

Re: New laptop.

2015-11-01 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland
I'd love to do more with Pages, but I'd need Ann's training. Last I
remember looking, it was over $100, which though I find that a fair price,
right now, I simply just cannot afford it. I'd be willing to pay in
installments, but I highly doubt that would be possible.

Ann, if you're reading this, let me know, and maybe we could work something
out. I'd need quite a bit of help though, as aside jotting down a small
little text file, doing the more high end word processing is not something I
am very familiar with. I'm quite good at teaching myself things, but I'm
just not totally sure how far I'd get with it on my own.

2015-11-01 Thread Sadam Ahmed

Hi Jonathan,

I forgot to mention it's the Retina display model.

Not sure if this machine can be upgraded at least not without the proper
tools.

The flash chips might be soldered on as well as the RAM.

I could perhaps do some work on it myself but this might void the
warranty.

Yours truly,

Sadam Ahmed

I don't mind Windows 10 but I would need to resurrect JAWS license or perhaps
use NVDA.

Would be using the new computer for office related tasks and XL.

As always your help is appreciated.

Re: New laptop.

2015-11-01 Thread Alex Hall
Your call. I assume you are familiar with both, given that you've had a Mac for
two years but still know Windows. Macs are more expensive, but, well, they're
Macs, with all the advantages that includes. Do you have specific questions
about one platform or the other which you aren't sure about but would help your
decision?

As Jonathan said, too, a 2013 machine is pretty new. I'm on a 2012 Air, and
about to bring my 2011 Mini back to life, and both work fine. If you have a
mechanical drive in that Mac, that might explain a lot. Consider buying a solid
state drive upgrade for your existing machine, instead of a whole new laptop.
It's harder to replace hard drives in newer Macs, but it can be done with the
right tools and parts.
