also, in the Text Edit info, it does say version 1.5 and last modified in  
February. I do not see it listed in the app store, but like Brad I would assume 
it would be updated with the OS.

Yes, I am awaiting the day you send me your new Mac Studio. A restart seems to 
have solved the problem. It’s odd, since I had just started up the machine this 
morning but that’s how these things go I guess.

Would not text edit be updated when a macOS update is done? If running the 
latest version of macOS, I would think you would also be running the latest 
version of TextEdit.

Check the version of textedit.app in your applications folder. It should be

I tried all the things you described, and I'm not experiencing any issues with 
TextEdit on 2021 14 inch MacBook Pro with M1 pro processor and 16 GB RAM, 
running macOS  Monterey 12.3.
Did not try anything with pages.

Perhaps it is an Intel thing.
