Hi,

 

You should be able to do any of the following:

 

• navigate to the menu item, press VO-w once to hear it again, VO-w a second 
time to hear it spelled out, then VO-w a third time to hear it spelled out 
phonetically.  Pressing a fourth time will start the three options all over 
again.

 

Or

 

• switch the rotor to characters, then use down arrow to move character by 
character through the menu item.

 

Or

 

• press VO-shift-down to interact with the item, then press VO-shift-left or 
right to go through character by character.

On the Mac, you can do this with the command, VO + Shift + C.
Be aware that this may not work everywhere. The simple action of invokeing this 
command, may cause a  menu  or some other element to close.
