Re: Sonos collecting personal information

2018-08-17 Thread 'Donna Goodin' via MacVisionaries
Hi Grant,

There's a difference between can be used outdoors, and designed for outdoor
use. Neither the HomePod nor the Sonos are designed to just be left outdoors,
though Apple does say the HomePods have a pretty significant degree of
water-proofing.. Re our Sonos, we leave them outdoors if the weather's OK, and
bring them in when it isn't. We've been doing that with our Sonos for several
years now, and they still work just fine.

We've decided to make our Sonos last till the end of this season by simply not
installing any further upgrades, and thus avoiding having to create an account.
I suspect that when we switch to the HomePods next year, we'll get some kind
of case for them, since they don't have the hard plastic shell that the Sonos
have.
Best,
Donna

 Hi all,

I just thought I would post this for those of you using or thinking about
using Sonos speakers. Sonos is now making it mandatory that users
register their devices, and has instituted a new privacy policy requiring
that users agree to allow them to collect users' data and information.
Below is a link to an article I found that discusses that issue. I was
not able to find the mentioned setting that allows you to disable usage
data sharing, maybe someone else will be able to do that. But even so,
the article gives a good overview of these changes.

For Alexa users this may be nothing new. But as for me, I don't see any
reason for them to get my information. My Sonos speakers may be going on
 Craig's list.

Hi Donna, where did you read that HomePod can be used outdoors? According to
this Apple support article “cleaning and taking care of HomePod”, HomePod is
intended for indoor use only. Here is the link:

That said, the HomePod really is a terrific speaker and I’m very happy with how

That's my feeling, too. I figured there will be people who don't care, but any
Sonos users should have the option of making an informed choice.
Interestingly, my husband and I have been researching alternatives. I didn't
think you could leave a HomePod outdoors, but according to Apple, you can. My
husband also found a case for Homepods made by Catalyst, that says it will
protect the HomePod in up to six feet of water. So, I think we're going to be
going with HomePods and ditching our Sonos.

Re: Sonos collecting personal information

2018-07-15 Thread 'E.T.' via MacVisionaries
Collecting user data is big business and big money but we do not get
to share the money. And I am not convinced that even if we opt out that
our information is nt shared. Mandatory registration? Interesting.

Hi all,

I just thought I would post this for those of you using or thinking about using
Sonos speakers. Sonos is now making it mandatory that users register their
devices, and has instituted a new privacy policy requiring that users agree to
allow them to collect users' data and information. Below is a link to an
article I found that discusses that issue. I was not able to find the
mentioned setting that allows you to disable usage data sharing, maybe someone
else will be able to do that. But even so, the article gives a good overview
of these changes.

For Alexa users this may be nothing new. But as for me, I don't see any reason
for them to get my information. My Sonos speakers may be going on Craig's list.
Cheers,
Donna
