Re: Speaking TV guides -Offcom consultation

2014-07-21 Thread 'Chris Blouch' via MacVisionaries
I didn't follow the TV part of the advanced communications in the CVAA
as I don't really care much about that but you might want to check into
it. Supposedly all it takes is filing a complaint with the FCC to get
thing rolling although I think you're supposed to contact the provider
first and document the results (or lack thereof). What is more
interesting to me is that this is supposed to be driving accessibility
in email and chat apps.

Hi Adrienne,

Many thanks for posting this.

I do find it more than a little ironic (as well as slightly frustrating)
that Ofcom require you to solve a capcha before you submit the online
response to what is essentially a consultation on accessibility.

Cheers,

Re: Speaking TV guides -Offcom consultation

2014-07-12 Thread Sabahattin Gucukoglu
It's not peachy, but I'm fairly optimistic. Although for various reasons I
don't believe Ofcom has real teeth, we do have social acceptance of
audiodescription and subtitles on public broadcasts, which goes a long way to
making the case for it. That's one genuine advantage of having taxpayers pay
for content. We also now have exceptions to copyright for alternative formats.
However, I imagine the real reason that Ofcom is asking is that there are
commercial pressures against it, so there's plenty of work to do yet.

Cheers,
Sabahattin

Charter has an app for iPhone (haven't tested it on my iPad 2, and my iPHone 5
chewed the humous some months ago [*bitter tears*=), which seemed like it was
starting to incorporate that functionality, although its Change your cable box
to the requested channel, never worked for me, and the app would only let you
stream whatever was being offered at the moment, not the entire selection of
cable channels you had subscribed to. I'd like to see those features upgraded,
as well as a navigable TV guide, and if it's not something they can incorporate
in the cable box you get from the company, then I think an app for desktop as
well as mobile devices is called for.

Personally, I think if countries such as the UK start mandating that
manufacturers provide talking cable guides, etc., it will go a long way toward
encouraging the US to do the same, which is very much in line with the ADA's
mandate for equality.

To the best of my knowledge there has only been one legal action under
the existing UK Equality Act and that was dropped after the company
relented and promised to fix their website accessibility. So does that
mean everything else in the UK is just peachy? Similar issues with the
AODA in Canada. The laws have no weight unless they are enforced.

iPhone app where you could say tune the weather channel and the app
would tell the settop box to change the channel. Like curb cuts a lot
of this stuff is useful for everyone so I hope the UK goes the same
direction as the US as far as advanced communications and the FCC
stuff. What is concerning is that the existing UK accessibility laws
really aren't enforced so would this end up as another bit of fluff
that nobody really implements?

With apologies for cross-posting and being a bit off topic. Hope it's
OK.

OffCom regulates communications in the UK. They are looking for
responses on whether they should make it compulsory for manufacturers
to make all electronic programme guides speak. I know most of you
are not in the UK, but, like the business with the Kindle and other
e-readers and the FCC, there will inevitably be knock---on effects
for all of us, no matter where we live.

OffCom have assured me they welcome contributions from outside the UK.

So, sorry if I have transgressed etiquette, but I hope it was in a
good cause.

Best wishes
