Re: Windstream versus Cox?
Thanks, Gary,. Your message fits with what others have said, so have decided to tough it out with Windstream for now till I can check into some of the fixed wireless services discussed yesterday. You're not the first person I've heard say bad things about charter. For now, I still have my service order in with Windstream. I'm not holding my breath, but I'm not gonna cancel it until I settle on a good alternative. Re: Windstream versus Cox?
It’s just a different thing. Instead of going through a phone company to get to your house like the local bell for DSL or cable they use a wireless system. There’s a central tower with sector panels on top and then they point these small panel looking antennas towards the tower for service. You might stick a panel on your roof or your side or even just set it in a window depending on your view of the tower. Speeds from 1 megabit up to hundreds is usually available. Whether it’s good or not depends on how it’s built out like most things. If they used licensed spectrum and good quality gear it usually works great. If they use regular WiFi gear you can have mixed results. Also depends on geography and the view of the tower but that’s what the site survey is for. Hope that helps. > On Jul 10, 2017, at 2:26 PM, Donna Goodinwrote: > > Yes, when I was reading about them, it said something about them being fixed > wireless providers. I know a little bit about them. I believe both are fixed wireless providers so they may install a small panel on your home that broadcasts back to a tower. Some used licensed space and others use regular non licensed WiFi frequencies. I believe they were a member of the ISP-Wireless and some other groups I used to be a part of when I was in the provider game. Wouldn’t hurt to havre a free home site survey done to see if you could reach their tower. Depends on how long they make you wait for the luxury.:) > On Jul 10, 2017, at 1:58 PM, Donna Goodinwrote: > > Thanks, Scott. Re: Windstream versus Cox?
That does sound refreshing. Unfortunately I just called them, and they don't service our address. Sigh! Sounds like you'll feel right at home with a larger service provider :) Can't speak to Windstream but I've had Cox for years and they have generally been solid. I bought my own cablemodem so I didn't have to pay the rent for that and plugged that into an Apple AirPort. Had hiccups whenever the power burped but I added a UPS and now things are pretty flawless. I can't recall the last time I had an outage. Re: Windstream versus Cox?
Well, I've already got the Winnstream blues. They hooked up our service late Thursday afternoon in less than 24 hours it had already gone down. And they're telling me that it won't be restored until Wednesday. I'm on impressed! I've spent hours on the phone with them and all calls have resulted in absolutely nothing. So, since I'm really not interested in giving our money to a company that thinks it's OK to leave customers without service for five days, I am thinking about switching to Cox. Re: Windstream versus Cox?
Windstream is a smaller company, out of Rhode Island oddly enough I think. Cox is a pretty major cable provider. So you’ll probably get fewer services but more personal attention at wind stream and the big company blues but lots more options with Cox. I would put a Cox cable in the category with a Comcast. > On Jul 10, 2017, at 10:24 AM, Donna Goodinwrote: > > Hi all, > > I'm dealing with getting new Internet service set up at our new house.
