Re: iOS 11 will stop apps like Uber from constantly tracking your location - CNET

2017-06-21 Thread Jonathan Cohn
Kevin,

If an app has available both GPS always and GPS when active options in IOS 10,
then after GPS is accessed while the app is in the background IOS will bring up
a dialog to allow you to disable background GPS activity. So this is not as
hidden as many of the system options.

Though I doubt most IOS users have any clue how to adjust this setting after
initial query.

Best wishes,

Jonathan Cohn

While choice and lots of settings sounds great in theory–it falls down in
practice. Only power-users, which is a small-subset of the user-base know
about these settings and even a smaller set of users that configure them.
It’s an engineer approach to stuff in lots of settings, but great UX Design
will have excellent defaults that are user focused.

Hi,

I agree regarding the validity. The benefit to this feature though is the
choice from the user prospective. If the user would rather not these apps do
this sort of thing, they can disable it. Improves on security and a user's
ability to configure to their own preferences.

There’s validity in apps like FourSquare, Yelp, etc. using location
services in background. E.g. It’s able to provide proactive recommendations
via notifications based on where I am/near without having to open the app.
Same goes for being able to have Uber/Lyft know where I am and arrive
faster–it’s a trade-off between usability and privacy.

Re: iOS 11 will stop apps like Uber from constantly tracking your location - CNET

2017-06-11 Thread Mike Arrigo
Yes, this is a good thing. If you are not using an app, there is absolutely no
reason for it to be tracking your location, it serves no purpose and probably
drains the battery faster.

Re: iOS 11 will stop apps like Uber from constantly tracking your location - CNET

2017-06-10 Thread Jonathan Cohn
How precise is the data that the carriers have? I know it is ancient history
now, but I remember when listening to the "Serial" podcast was running the
carrier could only provide data to the tower level. I have also listened to
discussions on the devices used in cars/helicopters that pretend to be cell
towers so that they can receive the responses to AYT messages and get a signal
strength of all reachable devices in range of the device. I believe that was
called a Sting Ray, and there have been court discussions as to the legality of
using these devices.
Probably off topic on this list however.
 and
Best wishes,

Jonathan Cohn

Good for stopping Uber but the real privacy invaders (the Government) I’m sure
will have their location access preserved.:)

It’s interesting how hard that location data is to get access too. There’s the
in phone location data but then there’s the network data that Verizon and the
other carriers keep. It’s very hard for a company to get access to this
network data. It’s amazing how under the thumbs of the government Verizon is.
I can’t talk much about it but my first week actually working onsite at Verizon
was the week of the Boston bombing. Let’s just say, eye opening day in
wireless carrier land.
