Re: Getting back a forgotten recovery key using file Vault2 and V O

2013-11-16 Thread Cheryl Homiak
Did you lose your password? You only need the key if you've lost your password
which you would have made up. And actually I did find some way to copy the
recovery key but maybe that was an older version of filevault and things have
changed.

 Hey list,
I’ve enabled File Vault2, a way to encrypt your disk with sensitive
information or other info. But the recovery key I couldn’t write down as
there is no way of interacting with VO to copy the text of the key. So now, I
no longer have the key anywhere, and VO has a beep prompt at login because
the voiceover service does not fully come on when a disk is encrypted with
File Vault2 enabled. The only thing I get is 1 beep to tell me that I’m on a
username field, 2 beeps to indicate I’m on a password field, and 3 if I login
 correctly.
So my question is. Has anyone who use V O and who may have enabled File
vault2 experienced this recovery key issue? If so, how did you get around it?

I haven’t lost the password, yet, though i really wanted to write down the key
and couldn’t. So I’ll need to call AppleCare and ask them for the key and email
it to myself. How were you able to copy the key? When I am able to generate a
new key I’ll try your way of copying to see if it changed or not. Hopefully,
though, it hasn’t changed.

Re: Getting back a forgotten recovery key using file Vault2 and V O

2013-11-16 Thread Nicholas Parsons
In Mountain Lion I was able to copy the key using VO-Shift-C, to copy the last
spoken phrase. You should be able to use this—it's a great one to remember when
VO can't interact and select text to be copied.

Apple will not be able to email you the key as Apple does not keep any copy for
security purposes. So if you didn't copy it or write it down that first time
you won't be able to get it back. Instead of getting the key, just write your
password down somewhere safe where you won't forget it. Somewhere like
1Password would be good as it will be encrypted and you can access it from
places other than your Mac, such as an iOS device. You might also like to just
save it in a text file somewhere like Dropbox, only don't indicate in any way
what it is (e.g. don't say File Volt Password, just write it somewhere you'll
know where to look, and even disguise it some way if you can). If your memory
is good, then I'd recommend not actually writing the password, just writing
down a good hint that you know will remind you of it if you one day forget.

Though I started to set up File Volt, I chickened out when it told me VoiceOver
wouldn't work properly on the login screen. How easy is it to login with that
beep method? And is that every time you login? Does it happen even at the login
screen when the Mac wakes from sleep, or only when first booting up?

Cheers,
Nic

Re: Getting back a forgotten recovery key using file Vault2 and V O

2013-11-16 Thread Daniel C
Strange. It has an option to store the key with apple so why wouldn’t they keep
it.
As far as the login, it only does it at first boot, if it awakes from sleep, it
uses regular voice over. Otherwise the beep method. It scared me at first, but
i got it right the first time.
VO+shift+c, good keystroke for me to remember. I’ll retry file vault if I can.
Though as I said, it’s odd that they have an option to store the key with
apple. I was told they encrypt the key and if you answer the 3 questions you
chose, then they’d give you the key.

Oh right, well if you chose that option then I guess you're fine. No need to
worry so long as you can remember the answers to your three questions. I doubt
you'll forget the password though as you have to enter it every time you turn
on your Mac.
