RE: Handwriting on an iPhone

2016-03-25 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi David,

This link and further investigation has put me on to the Adonit Jot Script 2
which is seemingly still rated as the number 1 stylus for the IOS iPad and
iPhone

Problem is it's three times the price of the Jot Pro.

RE: Handwriting on an iPhone

2016-03-23 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi David,

Yeah was looking lastnight at that.

Was also reading the specs on the stylus again and believe it's a device I may
have had recently.

It seems to say it has a disk at the writing end which sits flat on the screan
and then you move it around to move the tip of the stylus around the screan.

If it is that device I'm thinking of then it's easy to break or was when I had
one.

Which is wy I'm looking but for the price might be worth checking out.

Handwriting actually just uses the finger drawing the letter in print. Use a
three finger flick down to change the case of the letter, the number, or

RE: Handwriting on an iPhone

2016-03-19 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi David,

Thanks for that, I'll have a look.

I was looking at the Wacom Bamboo stylus Fineline 2, which appears to be
Bluetooth enabled for connection to your tablet
But I'll check on that tomorrow with a colleague.

Great thanks, I'll have a look at that later.

I've downloaded just press to record and it's great, I can't wait to put it
into action during eetings at work.

And as easy as it is to use and how it works, I'd pay twice as much as it cost.

David’s correct here. It must say the letter. Mine will say “Not recognized”
and I know I’ve got the phone slanted somehow. I find the larger screen area of
the 6S harder to write on as I tend to slant things. I can go fairly quickly
and accurately on my 5S. Also be sure you are in the middle of the screen.

Not sure if this app is still in the App Store but Do It Write (note spelling
of the last word) is an app that let’s you practice handwriting. It really
helped me initially since it had been years since I’d written print.

I’ve tried playing with it using the Notes app and recently tried it with an
inexpensive stylus with poor results. I’m thinking it’s more a pressure
issue with any stylus. It seems to work much better using just the finger.

I use it to bring up apps, to occasionally jot down phone numbers, though
this is less used now that I have just Press Record for my Watch.

I have a friend who uses it when writing texts and email on her phone and
she swears by it with just her finger.

I'm goin g to try pages also, I just need something to take notes with during
meetings and my handwriting is faster than my typing.

Notes Plus is an app which has handwriting recognition in it. The handwriting
recognition part is an in-app purchase above the $11 AUD price for the app.
However, the menus are the only part of the app which is accessible. For the
sighted, Notes Plus translates handwriting into computer text. It works well
for low vision people in school as well.

You cannot handwrite in any app we know of with VoiceOver running. The app, 7
Nots HD, Prem will allow VoiceOver to read what was written, but VO blocks the
ability to write in the app whilst VO is running.

Handwriting actually just uses the finger drawing the letter in print. Use a
three finger flick down to change the case of the letter, the number, or
punctuation.

2016-03-19 Thread Jenine Stanley
David’s correct here. It must say the letter. Mine will say “Not recognized”
and I know I’ve got the phone slanted somehow. I find the larger screen area of
the 6S harder to write on as I tend to slant things. I can go fairly quickly
and accurately on my 5S. Also be sure you are in the middle of the screen.

Not sure if this app is still in the App Store but Do It Write (note spelling
of the last word) is an app that let’s you practice handwriting. It really
helped me initially since it had been years since I’d written print.

When in the handwriting mode, you can also flick to the left to erase a letter
and do a 3-finger flick up or down to change to upper case and/or numbers and

I’ve tried playing with it using the Notes app and recently tried it with an
inexpensive stylus with poor results. I’m thinking it’s more a pressure
issue with any stylus. It seems to work much better using just the finger.

I use it to bring up apps, to occasionally jot down phone numbers, though
this is less used now that I have just Press Record for my Watch.

I have a friend who uses it when writing texts and email on her phone and
she swears by it with just her finger.

Handwriting actually just uses the finger drawing the letter in print. Use
a three finger flick down to change the case of the letter, the number, or
punctuation.

Use the two finger flick from right to left to backspace / delete the just
written letter. Use two finger swipe from left to right for space, right to
left for delete / backspace, and three-finger swipe down or up to change
between upercase, lowercase, numbers, and punctuation. When I just tried it, my
s was recognised as a g. I need to practice more. However, I love braille
screen input, so keep putting the practice off.

2016-03-19 Thread David Chittenden
Notes Plus is an app which has handwriting recognition in it. The handwriting
recognition part is an in-app purchase above the $11 AUD price for the app.
However, the menus are the only part of the app which is accessible. For the
sighted, Notes Plus translates handwriting into computer text. It works well
for low vision people in school as well.

You cannot handwrite in any app we know of with VoiceOver running. The app, 7
Nots HD, Prem will allow VoiceOver to read what was written, but VO blocks the
ability to write in the app whilst VO is running.

Interesting that it only works on a app for which I've got one starting with

I can't get it to find anything starting with S for which I've got at least 6
apps sonos and spotify aren't showing up.

Whilst on the home screen, turn the rotor to handwriting. draw the first letter

two-finger flick down to cycle through the matching apps. Double-tap to open

Yeah I've been looking at a couple
Bamboo paper and MyScript note are a couple but yeah not overly friendly, why
these apps can't be accessible I can't figure out.

I am never sure of anything. My understanding is that they are using a
third-party handwriting recognition app. I will check with some sighted people.
iOS now permits installation of third-party keyboards (a fact which locked me
out from using the onscreen keyboard on my iPhone last year because many of
them are completely inaccessible).

I found that with the stylus I had to press harder than I would if I was
writing with a pen. It wasn’t a natural thing. then again, writing using your
finger isn’t necessarily natural either.

As you note, David, the 6S and beyond have the pressure sensitive screen for
other uses and that really messed with using a stylus for handwriting. I’ve
never triggered 3D touch using my finger for handwriting but using the stylus,
I did so often.

Here’s a question. Does handwriting work without VO? I’d assume so and of

I’ve tried playing with it using the Notes app and recently tried it with an
inexpensive stylus with poor results. I’m thinking it’s more a pressure issue
with any stylus. It seems to work much better using just the finger.

I use it to bring up apps, to occasionally jot down phone numbers, though this
is less used now that I have just Press Record for my Watch.

I have a friend who uses it when writing texts and email on her phone and she
swears by it with just her finger.

Increased pressure would not make a difference. The iDevice screen is
capacitive. The iPhone 6 S is pressure sensitive for different ways of

Re: Handwriting on an iPhone

2016-03-19 Thread Jenine Stanley
I found that with the stylus I had to press harder than I would if I was
writing with a pen. It wasn’t a natural thing. then again, writing using your
finger isn’t necessarily natural either.

As you note, David, the 6S and beyond have the pressure sensitive screen for
other uses and that really messed with using a stylus for handwriting. I’ve
never triggered 3D touch using my finger for handwriting but using the stylus,
I did so often.

Here’s a question. Does handwriting work without VO? I’d assume so and of
course would never use it that way.

So you can use it to open apps on your device?

Thanks for that,
Yeah I'd like to be able to try the stylus first but they don't seem to let you

I’ve tried playing with it using the Notes app and recently tried it with an
inexpensive stylus with poor results. I’m thinking it’s more a pressure issue
with any stylus. It seems to work much better using just the finger.

I use it to bring up apps, to occasionally jot down phone numbers, though this
is less used now that I have just Press Record for my Watch.

I have a friend who uses it when writing texts and email on her phone and she
swears by it with just her finger.

Oh, using handwriting to open apps is quite cool indeed and my preferred method

Re: Handwriting on an iPhone

2016-03-18 Thread David Chittenden
Whilst on the home screen, turn the rotor to handwriting. draw the first letter
, and then each subsequent letter, of the app name. At any time, use a
two-finger flick down to cycle through the matching apps. Double-tap to open
the selected app.

Re: Handwriting on an iPhone

2016-03-18 Thread David Chittenden
I am never sure of anything. My understanding is that they are using a
third-party handwriting recognition app. I will check with some sighted people.
iOS now permits installation of third-party keyboards (a fact which locked me
out from using the onscreen keyboard on my iPhone last year because many of
them are completely inaccessible).
