Re: Setting pdf Files to Open in Preview?

2014-06-04 Thread Christina C.
If I click a pdf file from a website Safari always opens it for me as well. If
I am in finder though, than preview will open the pdf document.

Re: Setting pdf Files to Open in Preview?

2014-06-02 Thread Kayaker
Hi,

Didn't I just answer this exact question over the weekend? You cannot in
Safari, click on a pdf link and have it open in preview. This was deprecated in
Safari version 7, maybe even 6.1. This is done by a helper app database in
safari. The technical way to set this preference was via this command in
terminal:
defaults write com.apple.Safari WebKitOmitPDFSupport -bool NO

This preference is no longer supported.

Absolutely do not enable Safari to open safe files after download. This is a
huge security risk. In fact, Apple should be ashamed they enable this by
default. Turn it off and keep it off.

The finder's Get Info and open with setting has absolutely nothing to do with
the initial question. That only affects files in the Finder's open API (e.g.
Double clicking the file or command O).

Again, the easiest solution I am aware of is to have Safari open the PDF in the
safari browser, and then contextual click on the pdf and open in Preview.

If you wish to search the Apple forums, you'll find exactly what I've just said
above.

Best,

I don't have access to my computer right now, but there's an option in
preferences that says "open safe files after downloading". You might try that.

Hi,

This should actually have nothing to do with Mavericks. When you install Adobe
Reader, it likes to take over things. Normally, you need to remove the Adobe
Plugin from your /Library/Internet Plugins folder in order to stop Adobe Reader
from doing this. At least in previous versions of the MacOS, this was the case.

Re: Setting pdf Files to Open in Preview?

2014-05-30 Thread Kayaker
Hi,

The pdf file type is supported inline with Safari. Just like you don't have
every image JPEG open in a graphics program, so is it with PDFs. There used to
be a setting in Snow Leopard that allowed Safari to open PDF files in Preview,
but that got cut with Lion, as I recall. I also miss this feature.

What I tend to do, is actually have Safari open the pdf, then I use the
contextual menu on the pdf to open in preview. This eliminates the need for
the download and open. It's a little faster than the way you describe, and you
don't have to clean up your downloads folder. If you wish to actually save the
pdf locally, you can do a save as from preview and put it where ever you want.

I know it's not the answer you were hoping for.

Best,

Faith doesn't give you the answers, it merely stops you from asking the
questions.
