Re: The Mac startup chime is making a return in macOS Big Sur

2020-06-26 Thread 'Sabahattin Gucukoglu' via MacVisionaries
Weird, I can barely hear mine, although to be fair it is elevated on my desk
and behind an iMac. I have set the PC speaker to its loudest volume by raising
it as far as it will go with nothing connected to the headphone socket and in
Sound preferences. But it’s really not all that loud, at least for me, and my
2012 Mac Mini (now silent and running Linux) was certainly distinct enough to
be heard, although with some effort. Both my Minis are servers so it’s not a
big deal, but it’s certainly nice to have them chime at boot.

2020-06-26 Thread Brad Snyder
I have a 2018 Mac mini, and the chime sound is loud and clear. Much louder
than on my old 2012 mini. The internal speaker on the new model is in general
much more easily heard than on the older unit.

Apple is officially bringing back the Mac startup chime with macOS Big Sur,
four years after removing it in a previous version of the operating system.
The classic Mac sound was removed from Apple's lineup of computers with the
introduction of the 2016 MacBook Pros with Touch
Bar<https://appleinsider.com/inside/2016-macbook-pros-with-touch-bar>. Ever
since then, macOS<https://appleinsider.com/inside/macos> has been silent on
startup.
That changes in the first macOS Big

the chime's reintroduction on a 2018 Mac
mini<https://appleinsider.com/inside/mac-mini> and a 2016 15-inch MacBook
Pro<https://appleinsider.com/inside/macbook-pro>.
Based on social media posts from developers running the first beta, it looks
like the startup chime is widely available on other models, too. It appears
that users can toggle the sound on and off, since there's now a new "Play sound
on startup" option in System Preferences.
Apple first teased the chime's return during its WWDC 2020 keynote. While it
didn't actually confirm the fact, Apple's macOS Big Sur features page does
state that "system sounds are all-new and even more pleasing to the ear," and
were created using snippets of the originals.
During Monday's WWDC keynote, Apple VP of Human Interface Design Alan Dye said
that the new sounds are "familiar to the Mac, but remastered and more refined."
Although a software update in 2016 removed the startup chime, a later update to
macOS Catalina actually added them under-the-hood — though it required a
Terminal
command<https://appleinsider.com/articles/20/02/22/how-to-turn-your-mac-startup-chime-back-on>
 to actually enable them.

You can get the start up chime back now if you use the correct command

True. The start-up chime is iconic. I remember my old Apple IIc had its own
chime sound. I was totally dismayed when Apple did away with it on the 2016
MBPs.
I too have restored the chime on my 2019 MBP 13 and my new mini.
Wish I could get it on my iPhone/iPad. That would be awesome.

Apple is officially bringing back the Mac startup chime with macOS Big Sur,
four years after removing it in a previous version of the operating system.
The classic Mac sound was removed from Apple's lineup of computers with the
introduction of the 2016 MacBook Pros with Touch
Bar<https://appleinsider.com/inside/2016-macbook-pros-with-touch-bar>. Ever
since then, macOS<https://appleinsider.com/inside/macos> has been silent on
startup.
That changes in the first macOS Big
Sur<https://appleinsider.com/inside/macos-big-sur>beta. AppleInsider confirmed
the chime's reintroduction on a 2018 Mac
mini<https://appleinsider.com/inside/mac-mini> and a 2016 15-inch MacBook

Yeah! They heard us!

I used the terminal command to enable the boot chime on my new Mac Mini
a few weeks back, but it's heartening to see this feature get added
where it belongs.

Now, those of us who need it can have it; and thems that hate it can be
rid of it! How cool is that?

Best,

Janina
