Yes i have them checked to be seen.
I did find out that they will not show up if formatted in ntfs

Hi,

If the device is not showing up on your Desktop, then it is likely in the 
Sidebar of open windows.  Myself, I prefer to have all internal and external 
HDs, connected Servers and other ejectable media to be visible on my Desktop.  
It's just what I got used to in the old days of the MacOS.  You can set these 
preferences by going to your Desktop then pressing cmd-comma which will bring 
up your Finder Preferences.
