ChromeVox Next will be default in M56 of Chrome OS (ChromeBooks), which is
targetted for January 2017.
Chrome browser will *NOT* support ChromeVox Next, as there should be
sufficient support by native platform screen readers (e.g. Mac VoiceOver,
Windows NVDA).

Will Chrome VOX Next be available for the Chrome browser too? I haven't payed

be switching this on as a default in the next few months last time I looked.

2016-12-31 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi Mary,

Yeah it’s crazy so far all I’ve been able to confirm is AD and sub titles are
the only things in the accessibilities menu under settings,

Yeah from the home screan of the Samsung tv try holding down the mute key and
see what happens, you may have to hold it down for a few seconds to get the
menu to pop up.

I can’t see why it would be not available here so Have to wait till Samsung nz
are back at work after break.

Have a great new years simon

Hi Simon,
Well, I don't know about any shortcuts, and I can not imagine that Samsung made
something just for the US. But here, without any shortcut is what you do. Go to
menu, then system, then accessibility. When you open accessibility, voice Guide
is the first thing in the list. It's a toggle to be turned on or off. I know
that's not just for this TV but for any of the Samsung smart TVs made with in
the last couple of years. I can't imagine Samsung made TVs just for the United
States with this feature built-in. So I'm not sure what's happening for you.
And maybe you will like the Sony. I'm just OK with a Samsung because of the
cost because I'd rather put my money, what little of it there is, into audio if
I can get by with a cheaper TV.

Hi Simon,
The Samsung TV I have is model number un32j5500af
They have a few I think with similar model numbers. This is a 32 inch model.
They have larger ones. This one may have been exclusive to Best Buy. But if it
is, there is another one with a very similar number. It's a smart TV. And you
have to go into the menus and turn on the voice guidance. If your sales guy
can't figure that out, I can find out exactly what steps to take to do that.
Someone did kind of a rambling podcast on this TV earlier this year. Not
everything talks, such as once you get into the hub. But if what you want is to
use the TV and switch hdmi ports etc. and know what channel you're on and what
program is on that channel if it's over the air, it works just fine. And there
is some kind of guide that also seems to work fine, although I don't use it
much. I accidentally went into it once, and it started telling me what programs
were on the channel I was watching over the air. So, while it may not be as
smooth as the other TV that was being discussed, the price was right and it
does what I need it to do in an accessible way.

Hi Simon, all I can say is I hope you check out Samsung TVs before you decide
to buy a Sony. I say that because in my experience, the Samsung I just
purchased was a lot cheaper than a Sony I have recently Seen discussed on an
android list. They both have excess ability. I paid $219 US for a Samsung TV 32
inches with excess ability. There is an android Sony TV probably the one you
have been talking about, which is twice that if not more. But I don't see any
point. Sure, you may have to get a little bit of cited help start out with the
Samsung TV. But I am just not convinced that the android thing is worth it on
the TV. I could take the money I saved I'm not buying that Sony and spend it on
a really awesome pair of headphones, which I did. And I think I'll be ahead.
But to each their own.

Hi Tim,

Crazy yes however the organisation I work for seem to develop or purchase
products that are not optimised for IE infact we use an oracle system that
keeps telling us that IE is not a supported browser and please update to a
later version,
Crazy how IE 11 isn’t up to date.

And more to the point edge works worse than IE does.

Hey Simon,

It's kind of annoying that so many developers, especially web-site developers,
"optimized" their sites for use with IE, thus alienating many other users. I'm
thinking that this practice is possibly waning with the increased use of the
Mac and the growth of Chrome as well.

Hi Simon,
The Samsung TV I have is model number un32j5500af

Hi Mary,

Thanks for that,

That’s not an NZ model number but I’m sure they can figure it out.

But yes reading some documentation on samsungs site there is seemingly a
shortcut key within a accessibility system by holding down mute or volume I’m
yet to figure that out for sure.

Thanks.

I’ll let you know how I get on.

Hi Simon,
The Samsung TV I have is model number un32j5500af

What is the Samsung tv model you have with the accessibility features?

I asked the sale guy about accessibility in the samsungs but he couldn’t find

I’m not really a sony fan so if I could stay with Smsung then I’d prefer to.

The fact the android OS was fully accessible was the reason I was starting to

Yes. First, make sure you go into settings and check the box to enable
keyboard shortcuts, this will save you much grief later. There's a few
ways to get a list of keyboard shortcuts as well, these may prove very
useful. Pressing the question mark, '?' should pull up the list. Also, to
save you some time, the complete list can be found here:

Hi Tim,
Freedom Scientific recommends IE, (I try and stay as far from IE as I
can) most of my usage is with Firefox and Window-eyes or NVDA. However
I have used them with Chrome as well.

Hi,

When using Google Docs with screen readers on the Windows side, are you
using IE or a different browser. As far as I recall, IE and Google
didn't play well together at all. Of course, this may have changed
since I've not bothered keeping up with much to that subject in the
Windows world. I only touch Windows about once a month or so to work
within the Active Directory or to assist someone else, so I'm certainly
not much in the loop.

Re: Using Google docs, etc., on mac with voiceover

2016-12-29 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

We use the gSuite as part of my work and I've found it beneficial to use a
combination of ChromeVox and VO when dealing with Google Docs, Sheets etc. The
biggest limitation with ChromeVox is that it is only useful within the browser
itself. Therefore, any MacOS menu items and/or other MacOS needs are not
available to ChromeVox. Using VO alone in either Chrome or Safari also has
it's limitations as VO doesn't seem to access some of the menus within the
Google Docs as well as CV does. It's probably just me, but I often find it
easier to access the edit area of a Google Doc with VO as opposed to CV. There
may be some improvements or commands in CV that I'm not aware of that would
make it easier for me to navigate if I took the plunge and worked really hard
at it, but I still find it best to go with the two screenreader solution when
dealing with Google Docs and other apps in the suite.

I feel the same, but unfortunately I can’t take that stance when it comes to
training clients whose work site uses it, both mac and PC versions.

It also bugs me that google doesn’t have an accessibility branch of their tech
support like Apple and even Microsoft do. I called once and the woman didn’t
even know what Talkback was.

Hi Mary,

Our sales people for these things no less than I do which is why I have fun
with their computers,

On the funny side I set one of their mac book pro machines to a greak
keyboard and Spanish display languages it appears they reset it back to
factory defaults.

Anyway

What is the Samsung tv model you have with the accessibility features?

I asked the sale guy about accessibility in the samsungs but he couldn’t find
anything in the models they had in store,

I’m not really a sony fan so if I could stay with Smsung then I’d prefer to.

The fact the android OS was fully accessible was the reason I was starting to
look at that more than anything else.

Re: Using Google docs, etc., on mac with voiceover

2016-12-28 Thread Donna Goodin
I agree with Mary completely, here. Google seems to think it's fine to ignore
standard conventions, and make blind users learn their system. I don't
consider that acceptable. While it's true that different OSes have different
key commands, Google refuses to utilize the existing structure of the OS,
making users learn a whole new set of commands to accommodate them. For as
long as I have the choice to do so, I will refuse to use Google for that reason
alone. I realize that they don't care about my small protest, but I will do it
anyway, and will continue to mark them down for accessibility.
Cheers,
Donna

Hi Mary,

I can’t say I’mm really a fan boy of Google for most of their products,

However as I’m some what looking for a new tv currently I’m starting to change
my mind.

I’ve never really been a fan of Sony but the new Sony Android tvs I’m realy
changing my mind,

Playing around with the Sony 8500 TV today
Talkback allowed us to work through menus and channels / input sources as well
as the multiple menu levels with speech enabled Sony and Google have in these
tv’s given us the sightless more of an ability to control the tv without
sighted assistance.

As for google docks and chrome vox,

This is surely just a start for Google and with time they will make the g
suite usable with voiceover or even jaws / widnow eyes.

Google are doing some good thigns,

Hi. Haven't had time to do a topic search for this, so maybe it's
already been addressed, but I'm having no luck using the help
information from google on using docs with voiceover on the mac. I
can't even find the edit field for the body of the document, just
the field for giving it a title. Navigating to and activating a
menu, or using the VO passthrough key and then the shortcut to
activate a specific menu, yields inconsistent results. I made sure
quicknav was off and that screen reader mode was enabled. What am
I missing? Or is it actually just a mess anyway?
