Ah okay, I see. Sorry about that. I thought you said you were having
issues booting from an external drive... That's what I get for
checking my mail before having any coffee!

Re: booting from an external drive

2014-05-17 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

Since it is an internal HD, there's not really a cable to deal with. It's
possible that the drive was not seated properly when it was physically
installed thus it's not being seen. If it is on warranty, then, for sure, take
it to the Apple Store or Authorized Service Provider. If it's not on warranty,
and if you're comfortable with taking the bottom off the laptop, it's a fairly
easy thing to check. Although, if it was installed by a proper Tech, then I
suggest you take it back to them anyway so that it is not your fiddling that is
blamed for any issues.

That is my plan. Since it is internal, I have to take it into the Apple guys.

Re: booting from an external drive

2014-05-17 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

Just to clear up some info here. Usually, if you have successfully installed
the MacOS onto an internal or external drive, it is automatically bootable.
The only expectation is that the partition map scheme is GUID. When in Disk
Utility, when first setting up your drive, you can select the drive, select the
Partition tab, go to the Options button, select the GUID Partition Map scheme
and Apply it. You can subsequently install your Mac OS on it.Normally, the
install will fail if it's not initialized with the is scheme but stranger
things have happened.

Actually, forget it. Now it isn't showing up in disk utility at all...Guess
there is something amiss inside my Macbook Pro :(.

Hi. If you have a bootable drive, you can boot from it by going into
system preferences and selecting the drive in startup disk. Or, hold
down the option key when you hear the chime when restarting the
machine. This will give you a list of available devices to boot
from;internal hd, superdrive etc. If it is a bootable drive, you
should be able to select it from that list using the arrow keys then
hit enter. You may need to guess, or, just grab someone with some
working eyeballs to tell you how many times you need to arrow before
 hitting enter.

 Hope that helps,

Re: booting from an external drive

2014-05-16 Thread Jeff Berwick
I have replaced the internal drive, but it is only seen sometimes. I'm
actually running off my old drive connected externally. The new drive shows up
in disk utility, but not as a boot-up option. We installed Mavericks on the
new drive, and it seemed to go okay.

I suspect that there may be something else wrong internally, but was hoping
that I could find a way to mark the new disk as bootable and save myself the
cost and trip to the Apple store.

Hi. So, just so we're on the same page here, you replaced an internal
drive on a machine with one drive in it and you can only boot from it
some of the time? did the OSX install go okay?

Re: booting from an external drive

2014-05-16 Thread Jeff Berwick
Is there a way of making a drive bootable? I have just had my computer crap
out on me, and I have replaced the drive. It shows up sometimes, but not
always. I am unable to boot from it and, before I take the computer in for a
serious look-over, I'd like to try this.

Thx,
Jeff
