Music Notation software
Hello my fellow Mac loving musicians, What options, if any, are there for music notation software on the Mac? I know a lot of sighted people who use Finale, but I haven't messed with it, and I haven't touched music notation since I lost my sight, with the exception of a very basic primer in braille music. I know that Dancing Dots has some solutions on the Windows side, but I would really prefer to keep things Mac centric around here. Hi all, I've started some intermediate bass lessons, and my teacher asked me to find a notation application. I was wondering if sybellius was available for the mac and whether it worked? Re: Music Notation software
Even on the windows side of things, dancing Dots no longer develops the scripts for Sibelius which is now up to version 6. The last accessible version through scripts was for version 3.x. There was someone developing open source scripts for version 5 but I'm not sure where that currently stands. Notation is especially difficult to deal with from an accessibility standpoint. What made it a bit easier in sibelius was the fact that there was a sort of control panel that displayed all of the parameters for the current note position, that is, pitch, duration, position in measure, articulation, etc. What made it possible to have JaWS speak the various parameters was, of course, the scripting. Unfortunately, the whole success rested on having all the windows positioned just so and if anything was moved or out of place, there would be errors. Also, if a new version came out, many things were broken and people were chronically left behind in terms of versions. I have to say, it's one of those things that's sorely missing for blind users in general but especially on the Mac side of things. Re: Music Notation software
Oh darn! yeah I don't want to sit at a piano and plunk while someone writes. lol! If I have to do that I will but Oh well. I hope someone can come up with a way maybe to convert midi notes in to sheet music for mac. Is that even possible. if that is then maybe you can build a choir song that's not chance music out of midi data and have it print out in to pro looking music. Speaking of which. Music publisher is supposed to work for mac, not sure as to accessibility though as it is somewhat vague. As for the program in question, I recall the company is rather cozy with freedom scientific / jaws. Perhaps someone or several someone's should document to them how many customers they would have for the mac, so they take the plunge sooner rather than well at the end of time as the comment suggests? Re: Music Notation software
I'm afraid to say there are no solutions. I can use Sabalius , my spelling is wrong, with some vision. However, mos of the buttons are not labeled and I could not label them with VO. Re: Music Notation software
Each time this question comes up I remind myself to write the creaters of Lillypond. this is a music notation program for Linux, entirely command line WITH he goal of creating perfect music arrangements for printing sharing and the like. I keep meaning to ask if there is a mac edition, this time i will find out. Karen On Thu, 1 Dec 2011, Frank Tom wrote: I'm afraid to say there are no solutions. Would this help? http://lilypond.org/macos-x.html I notice it has both a GUI and a command-line option. Re: Music Notation software
Unfortunately, there are no solutions for Mac. the most current solution on the windows side involves scripts that were written for Sibelius 5.25 by Dan rugman in the UK. He is supposedly going to release a set of scripts that work with several different JAWS versions. For the latest information, consult the Sibelius Access list at www.musicaccess.co.uk. the Sibelius 5 scripts have been taken down to make way for the Sibelius 6 scripts. Again, there are no solutions for Mac and Voiceover. You're simply out of luck. i wouldn't survive without Sibelius 5.25 on the Windows side and Sibelius Access Scripts. Sorry that's the state of things. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Re: Music Notation software
Interesting. So it's a scripting language for typesetting musical scores. Never even knew such a beast existed. Have to send it to a friend of mine who teaches piano. Finale or other music notation software with voiceover?
Hi folks, Granted i called makemusic.com, the company behind finale today to ask. still, my goal involves using my voice for music composing, with my wondering if finale, or another music notation program has a good voiceover track record? In theory I might incorporate the daw, how is garage band these days? Thanks, Karen
Re: Finale or other music notation software with voiceover?
Karen: I don't think you'd be doing either Finale or Sibelius on a Mac, with or without accessibility requirements. Are those applications even available for Macintosh? Suggest you look at the announcement from the DAISY Braille Music Project I just excerpted to this list re Musescore. Re: Finale or other music notation software with voiceover?
Hi there, yes, finale and the other program you referenced are available for the mac, with its company makemusic deeply interested in improving its accessibility. They could speak reasonably to what works well in fact, quite a positive experience. no idea why I would consult the source you referenced, I am not a braille user, with my goal here being composing via voice. That being said, I am told by another musician experiencing blindness that exporting to braille has been a part of finale. again cannot speak to this first hand, not something I require.
