[maemo-developers] spam at maemo wiki
Hello, Every now and then we have some nasty edits at maemo's wiki. To avoid this I have been thinking to disable anonymous edits till we have a solution which: -either detects spam and reverts a page if necessary, or -provides a challenge-response test (captcha [1]) before submitting a page (Thanks Adam L for proposing it) Disabling anonymous edits would be temporary only, since it is against the idea of the wikis. Before doing anything I would be interested in your opinion. Does somebody have an idea which could be easily integrated into moinmoin (the wiki engine maemo.org uses)? Or shall we just leave the situation as is and revert the pages manually? I would appreciate your thoughts and comments on this issue. -ferenc [1] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Captcha ___ maemo-developers mailing list maemo-developers@maemo.org https://maemo.org/mailman/listinfo/maemo-developers

Most other open source projects' wikis also require log-in. It just makes it easier to see who did what. But until you have some challenge system, you'll still have some spam even with a login. The spammers just generate users. But it cuts it down a bit. Before doing anything I would be interested in your opinion. I don't mind fixing the frontpage few times until proper solution is implemented (challenge/response looks ideal). I would disable anonymous logins only when situation gets worse. Personally if site (blog, wiki, forum) wants registration from me for posting casual comments/hints/suggestions/corrrections I think twice and then just forget it. Personally if site (blog, wiki, forum) wants registration from me for posting casual comments/hints/suggestions/corrrections I think twice and then just forget it. This is the reason why those of us who maintain the Tclers Wiki (http://wiki.tcl.tk) have avoided logins so far, although the topic comes up regularly. Our attitude is that it is like a shop window - sure you'll get some vandalism from time to time, but you don't want to board it up and create barriers to people contributing. The Tclers Wiki is one of the bigger Wiki's around (containing tens of thousands of pages) and there are a couple of things that we do to minimise the pain from Spammers. The first (and perhaps most significant) is to include 'rel=nofollow' in all links, and to prominently display the following message on all edit pages (in case the mailing list software filters the image, you can see it at http://mini.net/pub/nofollow.gif) Most Wiki spammers seem to get the message - adding a URL to any page will not increase its page rank in Google. The second measure is to make it trivially simple to revert to a previous version of a page. This means that spam is usually replaced very quickly (by anyone with the interest in doing so) and the spammers soon tire of playing the game. Of course, you need a simple way to roll forward too. I'll leave others to judge whether these are appropriate to the Maemo wiki, but thought I'd share the experience in any case. Given the evidence, I would assert all three assumptions are false. I would say that if somebody values their words so little that they would not create a login, then the rest of us should accept their valuation as well - and not allow them to access the system. ___ maemo-developers mailing list maemo-developers@maemo.org https://maemo.org/mailman/listinfo/maemo-developers

I doubt Nokia's /particularly/ short on bandwidth, however ... I would say that if somebody values their words so little that they would not create a login, then the rest of us should accept their valuation as well - and not allow them to access the system. I disagree strongly. I made a fair few tidy-up additions to the maemo wiki before creating an account. These minor alterations were made in response to, for example, following a howto and noticing inaccuracies as I went along and are - IMHO - just the sort of low-barrier-to-entry modifications we should welcome from any passing good-willed user. I agree with the person who, earlier in this thread, said (paraphrasing) when I find a wiki with an account creation *requirement*, I often walk on by. If they don't want my informal contribution in a *revision*controlled*, wiki environment where they can throw it away if it proves not to be useful then that's fine - they won't get it. Re: [maemo-developers] ALSA
Devesh https://garage.maemo.org/plugins/scmsvn/viewcvs.php/alsa-plugin/?root=dsp-alsa If I understood this correct, this provides the ALSA interface through ALSA-DSP PCM plugin. would this help with integrating userspace output plugins? I have been working on alsa plugins for a2dp audio but I haven't spent the time on gst plugins. I really need to get going with gstreamer. A gst plugin could pass mp3 files as-is to a headset like my r35 with its own mp3 decoder. but I'm not totally sure the maemo apps can be told to use a different gst output... Maybe there should be a 'voting time' for every change: After a change, there should be a 'bullshit' button near the changed text. If enought readers (hopefully good-willed users..) during the voting time presses the button, the change should be discarded automatically. ;-) Of course there should be some mechanics to prevent same person voting several times etc.. No - it keeps any links in the Wiki from being considered when calculating the page rank. We (i.e. the Tcl community) regularly use Google to search the Tclers Wiki (e.g. nokia 770 site:wiki.tcl.tk).
