Maybe brand-new projects and very major releases make sense to be on the list,
but minor updates, an additional plug-in, etc. would not be sent to the list.
This seems like a pretty good compromise, but I am just a user of the great
projects on garage and not a developer of any of them.

IMHO all the fixes to crashes and leaks could also announced here,
at least if the components is a Desktop applet or otherwise always

the fix would be one-liner (i.e. not really a major feature :-)).

Mikhail,

the version that I am running is 0.9.1 and I am pretty sure that I used
the application manager to install it. If you would like a screenshot
or something like that I can send it to you off list. Just let me know
what you need.

In the scale of annoyances, this is not, for me a biggie since there is
a simple workaround. Interestingly, and contrary to my understanding of
X11vnc, X11vnc seems to stop running after a period of inactivity (i.e.
no connection) and then it must be restarted. I would have thought that,
since it runs as a daemon/service, that it would remain
running/listening once it is started.

In fact, it would be nice if the load-applet could be enhanced to
include stop and restart as options for those processes that are
installed as daemons and, furthermore, to somehow distinguish them in
the process list from those processes that are not daemons/services.

Quim/Jean-Luc/Nick,

I too like the idea of announcing the releases here. I check my email
much more often than I do www pages and with inbound email autofiltering
the email volume is no problem on this list. In fact I am on one topic
specific list that has ~100 messages/day.

Perhaps the forecast for new sales is very high and you're preparing for an
onslaught of new users? :-)

Hi,

As you have seen now the http://maemo.org homepage features the news
coming from http://garage.maemo.org, that are written directly by the
project maintainers. Users can subscribe to feeds and be the first
ones to know.

Garage project maintainers, please make sure all your relevant updates
are reflected there with as much detail as possible. The GForge
interface is not the best in the world to publish news and receive
feedback but it does both. As usual, please submit feature requests if
you miss something.

Sending emails to the mailing lists for new releases can't be
considered off topic but with 200 projects in Garage (and growing)
it is clear that it's not a sustainable practice in the mid term.

Thanks for your understanding (and yes, specifically Claws mail
project tends to publish news - I just needed an example to raise
this topic). :)

Quim

Hi Quim,

I do not agree. I think that a users mailing list is a good
location, with others, to announce new versions of applications.
All 200 projects will never announce in the same time. All people
doesn't survey maemo.org to find new releases.

But as you want, and even if I think that it's an error, the new
releases will not be any more announced on this list.

Even better would be a way to allow connections to services when the N800 is
offline (as on a 'plane) or not connected to Wi-Fi. This is a real
show-stopper .. nobody seems to know a workaround. :-(

Misha,

the version numbers shown in the application manager installed apps menu
are as follows:

*App Version #*

   X11VNC 0.8-3

   Free42 1.4.27-hildon3

Unfortunately the metadata associated with the app that is shown in the
application manager does not indicate from where the app was taken. I am
pretty sure that I took the Free42 app from the maemo downloads www
site. Regarding X11VNC, I am less certain of where I got that from.

John,

Some Maemo DBUS launching stuff was missing from the free42-1.4.27-hildon3
version, try newer one -1.4.29.hildon2. New version should be available in
the usual places...

After 15 seconds of testing at least you can select and launch it from
simple-launcher (haven't tried idea!) Once running and minimized, tapping on
it in s-l won't bring it foreground, I dunno if it should...

Perhaps you got it from http://mike.saunby.googlepages.com/x11vncfornokia7702
? IIRC the desktop file pointed to a shell script that acted like on/off
button, alternatively starting and stopping the service. Is it a problem if
it's not launched via D-Bus?
