Good question. We only needed apt for the Application manager, and
including aptitude as well frankly never occured to me.

But, there actually _is_ no Maemo main seed. There are the SDK
repositories, there are the SSU repositories, and then there is the
'certified' repository. I'd say that the Maemo Extras repository is the
best place for aptitude now, with the best hope for active maintenance.

Thanks for your clear answer. After all, it makes sense to me that extra
repository is the best place for aptitude: classic users does not use
Terminal to install new apps, and apt is just required for the
Application Manager which is the default install method.

To continue the analogy, for most people, a Porsche is going to be a
waste. They wont be able to drive it well (heck, depending on the
Porsche, they may not even be able to drive it _safely_), they wont
appreciate it and it doesn't help them get from point A to point B any
better than the apple cart (or, more appropriately, the Toyota). It
does, however, suck up money and space.

So, yes, again, for most tablet owners, aptitude is just a waste of
 space.

Is it possible to only install “aptitude” package without “apt” package
on a Debian based distribution like Maemo ? apt-* utils are in the “apt”
package, but apparently, “Depends:” of “aptitude” package does not
require apt, but just somes libraries of APT system.

 Hello!

I've just uploaded on Garage first package of aptitude for Maemo 4.1

There is aptitude itself and cwidget as dependent package. Both for

Looks like it is a historically first public drop of aptitude for
 Maemo Platform.

In my humble opinion, aptitude should be added to the main seed of
Maemo; why is it not already the case?

But being on the repository does not imply being installed by default.
I think the former is what Jonathan tried to say.

Yes, it is what I mean in my previous answer. In Debian for example,
“apt” (with apt-* default utils, installed by default in Maemo) and
“aptitude” are installed by default (also included in the debootstrap
method) and have the same high priority.
