not in scope for the SDK.

Of course. But that sounds like lots of work. So why not create some
scripts to put together maemo/x86 that boots from USB stick and map WLAN
and Bluetooth to physically available devices? Maybe we could even map
the hardware buttons to a USB joypad.

This way developers programming apps that make use of the bluetooth and
WLAN functionality can test their apps like in real life (only on a
slightly bigger box). An emulator that simulates the target device just
makes sense for kernel hacking.

the fact that you are not real root in scratchbox, and that becomes a
problem with deamons which access the device nodes etc e.g bluetooth.
Once the live CD boots up, it is like boothing up the x86 version of
Nokia 770 (offcourse somethings would always be missing like the DSP),
and then this live CD could mount the host machine partitions for
developer home directory. Maybe the other option would be UML but last I
checked UML had lacked host USB support (has that changed), so you can
have USB peripherals like Bluetooth dongle, WLAN etc and then you have
an x86 version of the Nokia 770.

I will first try to get the current incarnation of the scratchbox live
CD more mature. The set of features is basically OK now, but I have to
write documentation, do some cleanup and add/modify some scripts for
example for saving changes made to the UnionFS.

Afterwards I will pick up your suggestion and start building a
filesystem image that merges the x86-Maemo-Filesystem with some
startup-scripts from Knoppix/Kanotix and allows the use of Bluetooth and
WLAN hardware. I think having this kind of possibility to test would
greatly stimulate the development of network (or BT) enabled
applications. A device like the 770 screams for a version of Tetris that
allows either connecting to a tetrinet server or playing two-player via
Bluetooth.

Maybe I dont make any sense :)

OK, every reply so far asks for a live CD aimed to developers, not
something small that would also fit on a credit card sized CD or a USB
stick.

I'll build a quick and dirty version based on Kanotix Lite during the
next days.

[maemo-developers] Maemo Live-CD?

2005-06-08 Thread Mattias Schlenker

Is there already someone tinkering around with building the Maemo-Live-CD?

I just started tinkering around with a simple, compact Live-CD thet uses
some of the scripts provided by Knoppix and DamnSmallLinux but primarily
is built on uClibc, busybox, matchbox and some GPE-applications.

Since GPE/Matchbox and Maemo are quite related, it should not be a big
deal to build the Maemo-Live-CD on it.

Mattias
