Interesting. A friend of mine upgraded to 4.2007.26-8 yesterday and he
had to put it away for the night before the touch-screen was usable.

Our problem seems to be related to the Kingston 2 GB SD-cards we're both
using. The touch-screen failures vanished after removing the card.

Maybe the changes regarding support for SDHC cards cause the troubles.

I have been trying to find a summary of the status of different PIM

What I would like to know is:

 1. What are the different PIM solutions available?
 2. What synchronization possibilities are available for them? What is
 their respective status?
 3. Is there a N800 simulation-environment (VMWare for instance) where
I could test it out OR can I install the N800-environment on my

In the N800, you can back up to an SD flash card. When you connect the
N800 to your computer, via USB, the SD flash card appears as a folder on
the computer. You can then copy the back up file to your computer. Yo
can also simply remove the SD flash card from the N800 for safe keeping.

Re: Status of SyncEvolution and PIM applications

2007-07-08 Thread Ryan Pavlik
I recently documented the process of syncing GPE (a very well-rounded,
stable PIM suite) on the N800 with Evolution on the PC, step by step.
(I had searched around and found no such specific instructions
beforehand.) It requires no compilation (in most cases), no use of
Scratchbox (in all cases), and can be done without using RD mode,
AFAIK, so it is a good end-user solution. The daily syncs are also
handled through a GUI!

The link to the instructions is:
http://cleardefinition.com/page/Sync_Evolution_and_GPE_on_N800/

There are a few minor issues with the setup, which I have documented on
that page and plan to report to the projects soon as soon as I can tell
which bugs go to which projects :D You probably could try it out in
Scratchbox (using, for instance, the INdT Maemo VMWare Appliance for
ease of installation), but the risk to your device is very low.

Hope this helps! If you find any parts of that tutorial that need
corrections, or if you notice additional issues with the system, please
let me know and file a bug with the upstream projects, if applicable.
Thanks!

How to get upgraded without having PITA reinstalling all your so hard collected
software.

by dik

How I've got upgraded:

1. Went to Control Panel/Backup and made full backup.
2. Copied some files(in particular Maemopad+ database) which were in root
directory for some reason to my mmc1 card.
3. Saved list of installed applications to the mmc1 card by running dpkg
–get-selections /media/mmc1/soft.txt
4. Flashed new firmware (flashing guide is here:
http://internet-tablet.com/main/pereproshivaem-n800-ustanavlivaem-os-2007/)
5. During first boot Installation Wizard recognized backup on my card and
proposed to restore it. I couldn't refuse that :)
6. Install xterm(http://maemo-hackers.org/osso-xterm.install) and
becomeroot(http://eko.one.pl/maemo/dists/bora/user/binary-armel/becomeroot_0.1-2_armel.deb)
7. Open xterm window, become root: $sudo gainroot and change default root
password: #passwd
8. Get our saved list of installed software from the place we put it before:
#dpkg –set-selections /media/mmc1/soft.txt
9. Upgrade according to the selected list: #apt-get dselect-upgrade
10.Application manager displays list of packages to upgrade and asks for my
permission: Yes!
11.Packages got loaded in a couple of minutes and installation begins.
Sometimes licence agreement windows pop up. I agree :)
12.When application installer finished its work (no error messages!) I looked
at the menu - all software have been installed successfully except of that
which was installed not from repositories.

Everything went smoothly in my case. I wish you the same. Here is my
/etc/apt/sources.list:

Obviously packages installed not from the repositories nor with .install files
can't be reinstalled this way.
I would have to save them somewhere before installation.

A whole bunch of issues (new firmware)...

2007-07-08 Thread Tim

Hi,

I sent a couple of these already, but got no response. Now, I have a
new issue (which is at the bottom).

- Original Message -
Subject: Camera v2.9 loses video functionality?!
 Date: 07/06/2007 8:01 am

Has anyone noticed that the latest version of the Nokia Camera app
doesn't have the video option anymore?

- Original Message -
Subject: Arg! My backup doesn't work!!!
 Date: 07/06/2007 8:05 pm
Ok, so, I made my bsckup before flashing the new firmware... I
checked the
backup directory on the MMC -- everything appeared ok (although, I
didn't
look any deeper). Now, after upgrading, the Backup/Restore app
doesn't see
the backup. So, I checked the contents of my backup.metadata file
and, guess
what... It's completely blank (no XML data, nothing).
Now, my question is... What can I do?

NEW...

The Application Manager crashed while trying to install Python 2.5.
Actually, it has crashed on a few different occasions since
upgrading, but not like this time. This time, my desktop graphics
didn't redraw properly and the touch screen didn't work. Upon
restart, the Nokia Logo/Status Bar did it's thing, but then froze
when the Status Bar got to the end of the load animation. The startup
sound played (which usually plays during the hands graphic, but
nothing actually happened onscreen -- it is still on the Nokia Logo.
The N800 still goes into power save mode if I leave it alone -- and
comes back on when I tap the screen -- but it's just frozen on the
Nokia Logo.

I guess I'm going to need to reflash again. :(

Has anyone else experience any of these (three) items?

Thanks,

Tim

Interesting...thanks for your help.

Curious why mmc would be setup this way though. I would think many would
want to install and run apps from the storage cards.

RE: Anyone have success with j2me on n800? Using latest firmware...

2007-07-08 Thread Jakub.Pavelek
I can't execute *anything* on mmc, if I copy it over to e.g. /home/user
it runs happily :( Wondering what is that ...

--jakub

It may have something to do with the fact that MMC's are by
default using the FAT filesystem. If you don't use noexec, it
assumes everything's exec (since there is no exec attribute in
FAT), which makes files copied from MMC act weird and try to
execute instead of opening, at least on a desktop linux machine.

With new firmware I cannot cleanly install unzip, wget...as these have

With wget I get dep failure of wget-ssl conflict...yet I have no wget
on N800 and from googling this appears to be a deprecated package.

I also tried installing a gstreamer plugins lib (said it was
installable) and it fails silently! Wtf?!? This is linux man. Error msgs
please. There are ZERO dep issues for this pkg and it just fails.

I am in redpill mode as I needed root access for a variety of apps.

I have searched some for these kinds of issues but guess I am using
 wrong search terms.

Mike I have had better luck with the wget from maemo.lancode.de (He also did
an MPPE enabled kernel for the previous version of bora)
