8os enduser impressions

2007-12-14 Thread Fred Chittenden
After a few weeks of 8OS use, som comments--

*RSS-- The RSS reader should be touch/roll sensitive. This would also
require the desktop designmode to be turned on and off.
*Touch typing -- every key option should have a space bar.
* There
should be options to key size so users could adapt to smaller keyboards
and add keys of THEIR CHOICE -- Including f keys, etc.

Ah... You would need to copy control.maemo-bora to control, but I think
there might still be some packages missing, such as
libwpeditor-plus-dev.

We'll be putting some work in getting it to run on bora too, will
get back on this.

Best wishes,
Dirk.

Internet connection via mobile phone

2007-12-14 Thread sebastian maemo
Hi everybody:

I'm truly happy about how my little 770 connects to Internet via my Nokia
mobile phone. It's really easy, transparent and fast...

I've got a bit OFF-TOPIC question about that:

I've installed Debian in my laptop (just because Debian is installed in my
770, and I like very much how it works)... Now I would like to do the same
with my laptop: I would like it to connect to Internet via my Nokia mobile
phone, just like 770 does. As both of them are Debian systems, is there a
way to copy one configuration into the other system? What are the minimal
packages that I should install in my Debian laptop in order to work as good
as my 770?

Salut,
Sebas.

"airplane mode" for traveling

2007-12-14 Thread skelso
It looks like American Airlines, at least, disallows anything that transmits
intentionally. From their policy at [1]:

"Devices with transmitting capabilities may only be used if the transmit
capability is turned off and can be verified by a flight attendant"

and more specifically about something that's likely to use Bluetooth these days
(but who knows how long ago they wrote their policy):

"During flight, never use ...a cordless computer mouse"

So no specific mention of Bluetooth, but they're within a hair's breadth of it.

come to think of it I do have the same Fn key...

back to the Nseries, there are non airline situations where I'd like
802.11 off and BT on, just from a power conservation view (yeh if it's
not connected and not searching for new connections the 802.11 radio
is probably pretty cheap, anyone have a nuber for that?)

The same happens on my Dell, but there is a setting in the BIOS that allows
you to disable wireless throug hthe Fn Key while still allowing Bluetooth.
As a consultant I have had to change this to allow my bluetooth mouse when I
go to companies that are bothered by me having wireless on

the offline switch on my thinkpad also disables bluetooth. Clearly
someone thinks that no RF mean no RF (well beyond the usual noise)
