2007-12-29 Thread Josh Z
I'm still having trouble getting connected here. and was given the following
URL for reference, but I couldn't figure it out.
http://lug.cs.uic.edu/wiki/doku.php?id=wifi

How shall I translate that script on the URL into the setup of Connection
config of OS2008 on my N800?

Please help!

None. I still have my 770 and it works fine. I made a mistake

2007-12-29 Thread William Gordon Rutherdale
Thanks for the info, Ryan.

I may be interested in trying to compile things myself. The key though
is that someone has already compiled both Free42 and MPlayer for OS2007,
and (as you already indicated) I don't want to duplicate effort without
finding out what their plans are.

How would I go about learning who the maintainers are?

Re: Playing MPEG-2 or .tivo files on N800 OS2008

2007-12-29 Thread Ryan Pavlik
The install file is not the operative issue here - it is the fact that
applications must be recompiled to run on OS 2008 (Chinook) and many
require modifications before they do so. The compiling and packaging
produces a .deb - the .install is just a text file indicating where the
.deb is (simplifying this a bit, but you get the point.)

It might be best to contact the maintainers of the ports of those
programs and see if they plan on offering a 2008/Chinook build soon
before striking out on ones' own to port them again.

Re: Playing MPEG-2 or .tivo files on N800 OS2008

2007-12-29 Thread William Gordon Rutherdale
Hi.

I'm new to the N800 and did an upgrade to the latest OS2008.

I have discovered that OS2008 is not backwards compatible with OS2007 in
terms of packages you can install.

In particular there is a Media Player package ready to install on the
OS2007 page but not on the OS2008 page. If I try installing it anyway I
get an error message.

Can anyone tell me what is involved in creating a version of the
.install file that works for OS2008. Or if someone is planning to put
one up in the near future, please let us know.

I am interested in at least one other package too: Free42. This is the
emulation of the HP42 calculator. I am able to install it easily to an
ordinary Linux desktop. I have confirmed that the version on the OS2007
download page works when I have OS2007 installed but not when I have
OS2008 installed.

There is also another application I like to run on a Linux desktop that
I haven't seen at all on the download pages. Presumably other people
aren't interested. If I want to get it working, it sounds like I have
to learn how to use Scratchbox and try to create the .install file
myself. Is that the correct direction?

Should I be directing these questions to the developers list?

That kind of chain really isn't something to expect a complete newcomer

nokia.com should have a link to the wiki or wherever newcomers are

Bluetooth keyboard weirdness?

2007-12-29 Thread Marius Gedminas
I used an Apple Wireless keyboard with the N800 with OS2007. After a
certain period of inactivity the keyboard would go to sleep and the N800
would notice it and let me use the on-screen virtual keyboard. When I
started typing on the Apple Wireless keyboard again, it would wake up,
reconnect and send all the keystrokes to the N800 without losing any
characters.

Today I've flashed OS2008 and re-paired the keyboard (somewhat
painfully). When the BT keyboard goes to sleep, I can again use the
on-screen vkb, but the statusbar bluetooth icon still thinks it's still
connected. When I start typing on the BT keyboard, nothing happens.
I have to use Bluetooth statusbad icon to disconnect the BT keyboard
manually, and then when I type it reconnects, losing the first few
characters I typed.

Has anyone else noticed a regression like this? I did a quick bugzilla
seach, but other than a seemingly unrelated crash bug (2616) didn't find
anything. Bug 2640 is what I experienced when I tried to pair, but I
somehow managed to get it done in the end.

Getting root on OS2008

2007-12-29 Thread Marius Gedminas
Easy!

 1. Enable the Maemo Extras repository
 2. Install openssh
 3. Define a root password (openssh's installer prompts you for this)
 4. Open xterm
 5. ssh [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Type the password you set in step 3.

No 3rd-party packages or R&D mode necessary.

For extra geeks like me (warning: vi knowledge necessary):

 6. visudo
 7. Add

  user ALL = (ALL) NOPASSWD: ALL
  root ALL = (ALL) NOPASSWD: ALL

at the end.

You can always see/change the configuration (or the phone number) by

So, what command-line tools do you miss? I've got an idle scratchbox
here.

I've built some today (less, links, mc, wget; made vim actually
installable). I don't have upload privileges to maemo extras yet, so
you can find them only at http://mg.pov.lt/770/

Python is semi-installable on OS2008 today; for some packages you have
to go through the kitten dance[1] to avoid broken CDN proxies.

[1] The kitten dance is this (needs root):

cd /var/cache/apt/archives
sudo apt-get install whateveryouwant
  see which URLs failed with a size mismatch error
sudo wget -O package-filename-version.deb http://url/from/above?kitten
  for every URL that couldn't be downloaded normally, append
  ?kittens and save here under the normal filename
sudo apt-get install whateveryouwant
  actually install stuff

Credit goes to sp3000 on #maemo for the idea.

Aha! ssh copies my locale settings from the laptop, and lt_LT.UTF-8 is not
supported
on the tablet:

  ~ $ locale
  locale: Cannot set LC_CTYPE to default locale: No such file or directory
  locale: Cannot set LC_ALL to default locale: No such file or directory
  LANG=en_US
  LC_CTYPE=lt_LT.UTF-8

  LC_NAME="en_US"
  LC_ADDRESS="en_US"
  LC_TELEPHONE="en_US"
  LC_MEASUREMENT="en_US"
  LC_IDENTIFICATION="en_US"
  LC_ALL=

When I override LC_CTYPE, I get translated messages. A bit strange

Well, then, I'll just add

  export LC_CTYPE=en_GB

Thanks for the quick answer!

And what's the harm of putting a link on the page where the image is
located? Or on the Nokia page that points to it? If a user goes to the
Nokia or maemo page, why should it be necessary to search for anything?
Put the link where someone will find it. Don't expect someone to search
when the instructions should be where the update is.

What is so hard to understand about that?

Unlocalised browser when launched from ssh (OS2008)

2007-12-29 Thread Marius Gedminas
Flashed OS2008 on my N800. Nice!

Weird thing: ssh to the tablet and run

  browser --url http://www.google.com

The browser window appears, but its title says "weba_ap_web_browser".
The other messages also appear to be untranslated.

Bug?

I don't know, but why don't you try

  sb-conf show --cputransp

and pick the name that you see there? If you don't see anything, well,
then something is wrong (most likely you'll find out that Scratchbox
doesn't support x86-64 and you need to figure out how to install a
32-bit version instead).

FWIW qemu itself doesn't provide a cputransp method for scratchbox;
there's a separate glue package.  It's named scratchbox-devkit-cputransp
on Debian/Ubuntu.

You may want to check out the great tablet-encode scripts available at
garage.maemo.org. I have not used them for tivo files, but have used them to
convert DVDs to be played on my 770. As it relies upon mplayer and mencoder,
assuming you have the necessary codecs, you can probably convert those files to
something mplayer on your tablet can play.

good luck,
Kevin

An average consumer may not know about the wiki. They'll go to Nokia and
if they're looking for the Linux install, they'll be taken to the maemo
site, where there are no instructions for installing the image. Are
users supposed to be clairvoyant, so that they automatically know of the
wiki? What's the harm of including instructions or at least a link to
them, from the maemo site?

Hi,
Depending on the carrier you have, they may have it disabled. I
use Verizon in the US and it's never worked. They purposely disable
most of bluetooth's capability by flashing their own firmware onto the
the handset.

Thank you. I did not realize MPlayer was different than the built-in

Anyone know if utilities that I can use to help determine what the issue is?

Quick Launch for simple scripts

2007-12-29 Thread Julian Toler
I am looking for a way to quickly and easily run some simple scripts - the
most immediate example is the one line scripts for switching USB host mode
on and off:
echo host > /sys/devices/platform/musb_hdrc/mode
and
echo otg > /sys/devices/platform/musb_hdrc/mode

I really don't want to have to fire up the terminal and type these out (and
yes I know tab auto complete can speed this up, but this is still not as
easy as a menu item!)

I am very much a noob so the following idea may be naive and may be shot
down immediately:
I am assuming I could create a menu item that would run a shell script? Not
sure whether these desktop files need to point at executables or whether
executable scripts are also OK?

[Desktop Entry]
Version=1.0
Encoding=UTF-8 ?? needed?
Name=MyShinyScript
Exec=/usr/bin/myscript.sh (or .py or whatever)
Icon=MyNiceIcon (I can create the correct transparent png)
Type=Application ?? needed?
StartupWMClass= ?? needed?
X-Osso-Type=application/x-executable ?? needed?
X-Osso-Service=com.nokia. ?? needed?

I am guessing MyShinyScript would look something like:

#!/bin/sh
echo host > /sys/devices/platform/musb_hdrc/mode
I know I must make the scripts executable with chmod +x

Of course all this is probably going to be superceded by some kind person
who has set up Scratchbox and got their teeth into real programming - a
proper Maemo application which installs a simple host mode on-off utility
would seem to be a logical development, but in the meanwhile, a scripted
hack would be good for me!

Please could somebody tell me if my mad idea will work or whether I should
go home and start proper application development?

Cheers

Re: WiFi Connection Problem - N800

2007-12-29 Thread Josh Z
Thanks Mike!

Requirements: "If you would like to try using software (e.g. Dell Wireless
Utility, Intel ProSet Wireless, etc.) already installed on your computer, it
must be able to support 802.1X security with the TTLS authentication protocol,
and the TTLS inner authentication protocol of PAP. You must also add the Thawte
Premium Server CA to the Verify Server Certificates option."

I'm using OS2008, and i couldn't go through with the wireless setup without
inputing the WEP(SSID, Infrastructure, not hidden, WEP... ), which I have no
idea of. But I didn;t have to do that with my laptop setup.

Having "Odyssey" cannot be a real requirement. Most people download
odyssey because their WM/PocketPC wifi support sucks and Odyssey is more
robustodyssey also supports Enterprise WPA/WPA2, etc. and this is
another reason why people want it.

What are exact reqt's of wifi network? Wep, wpa2, wpa, wpa2Enterprise, etc.

WiFi Connection Problem - N800

2007-12-29 Thread Josh Z
Hi- I'm a newcomer here. Just got my N800 2 days ago. First post.

Problem here is this: My dorm is 802.11g-equipped, and my laptop works well
with the wireless network. However, they do require an Odyssey (by Juniper
Networks ) be installed for wireless access, but with N800 and Linux, that
seems to be a bit of problem. Phenomenon is, I was constantly prompted to enter
the WEP when trying to connect to the wireless network. Yes, N800 does a good
job detecting the signal strength. Is there any way I can go around this to
make it work on my N800? Thanks!

Happy New Year!
