N800 Hardware question

Has Nokia revealed its hardware design specs (chip-level)of the N series
especially the N800?
Would be good for the developers who want to develop new drivers and
applications on the devices. Any idea?

I don't think there are any official specs, but it's quite easy to find
all the interesting data.

Search the Maemo Wiki and Google. Should get you all the specs and
photos from the chips.

 Well, then, I'll just add

 If it does, probably
the situation still is worth a bug...

 Even if it's a bug, it's a minor one.

Hm. I guess it would be an upstream Gnome/Gtk bug in this case.

If it cannot find locale for one of the locale settings,
it sets everything to C locale... It should set only
the given locale setting to C locale (or to what LC_ALL
has if that is set).

Why you need it?

clear command comes from ncurses-bin package on Debian along with
e.g. terminfo database manipulation programs. ncurses-bin is a Debian
essential and clear is also in posix standard so it would probably
be good if it would be in the device by default.

Busybox package doesn't provide ncurses-bin and from the binaries
included into that package Busybox binary could be configured
to provided only clear and reset. I'm not sure how nice it would
be to have that limited ncurses-bin package in the device...
The terminfo database tools shouldn't be necessary there. :-)

gtk does

On error case (invalid locale) setlocale does nothing -- which
practically is same as setting everything to C. As documented in
setlocale(3)

In any case you should probably use 'run-standalone.sh browser [..]' to
start applications from command line.

http://linux.die.net/man/3/setlocale

 char *setlocale(int category, const char *locale);

If locale is , each part of the locale that should be modified is
set according to the environment variables. The details are
implementation dependent. For glibc, first (regardless of category),
the environment variable LC_ALL is inspected, next the environment
variable with the same name as the category (LC_COLLATE, LC_CTYPE,
 LC_MESSAGES, LC_MONETARY, LC_NUMERIC, LC_TIME) and finally the
environment variable LANG. The first existing environment variable is
used. If its value is not a valid locale specification, the locale is
 unchanged, and setlocale() returns NULL.

What version of tablet-encode and how did it fail? My guess is that the

reason, tablet-encode is copying that audio stream.

Please feel free to,send me details, or raise a bug in the tablet-encode

Good that you tried that so we can rule out Power Saving problems.

BTW, have you ever managed to get WiFi working with your device? I'm
just thinking that is this a hardware or a software problem. But if
you manage to get the network address using DHCP I doubt this is a
hardware issue.

Anyone know if utilities that I can use to help determine what the
 issue is?

The best would be to use a wireless sniffer to capture the WLAN
packets sent through the air. But that's quite difficult to setup
unless you're a Linux hacker. You could also try to use a ethernet
sniffer before your gateway, but that's also quite tricky.

My guess is that this an IP level problem, but I don't yet have any
facts to confirm this. My recommendation is that you change the
setting on the internet tablet to use manual IP and then try pinging
both from the network to the tablet and from the tablet to the network
and send the results here.

 Dear friends,

Today when I launched my application manager to check for updates on my
N800 (running OS 2007 version 3.2007.10-7), which used to work perfectly, I
got a 'unable to refresh list message. Should I worry about this? What
 causes this?

 Thanks,

 Andrei

ssh -x screen control

2008-01-02 Thread Tim Ashman
I've got a little problem that I hope someone can help me with.

I'm using the n810 with latest firmware.

I like to ssh (openssh not dropbear) into my home linux machine and run
various apps, etc. I use the command

ssh -p [EMAIL PROTECTED] -X

I then run commands like so

kmail
knode
etc.

When I run apps they all work great especially now that the builtin keyboard
is recognized by the remote. However I have one last problem...

If I minimize or in anyway move away from the remoted app I can't get back.
If I goto the terminal session it is still at the command prompt. I can't
find my X session anywhere. Can someone help.

OS2008 Video converter

2008-01-02 Thread Josh Z
The Video converter on Nokia's website does seem to work well... Do you guys
have any Windows-based converter to recommend? I've got some RM VBR videos on
my laptop, and I intend to watch some on my N800 on the go. Thanks!

p.s. no video at all, only audio works while playing those RM VBR on default
Mediaplayer or the ported Mplayer on N800.

Re: Map applications - N800 OS2008

2008-01-02 Thread Tim Ashman
You are correct. Go into the map app, then the menu, maps, available maps and
select and download one. Keep in mind the US west coast map alone is almost
700M

I think the map on n800 is empty by default... Do I need to download free
maps from somewhere on the web and then copy them to the relevant folder?
 Would appreciate specifics.
