but I still could not use it. I got network not reachable when I tried
to ping and under ifconfig I saw only lo. Right now I am able to connect
to a neighbor's WAP and access the Internet (and I still see only lo under
ifconfig), but I do not see my own WAP. When I was at CES I was able to
connect to many WAPs, but I was never able to access the Internet (server

Perhaps you checked already, but is your WAP broadcasting SSID? Is it
working fine with any otherm device?

Java VM??

2008-01-15 Thread Gary D Walborn
To all:

I have searched and I have been unable to find a Java VM for maemo...
Am I missing something? I can't believe that Java (or one of the
work-alikes) has not been ported... There are a number of Java apps that
I would LOVE to run on my N800 and N770. Java seems perfect for this
platform? Is there some major obstacle to a Java port? I think this
should be high on the to-do list...

I have the same issue on N800 and the above advice will definitely not
work. The issue is that skype is looking for a libhildonfm2 version

extract initfs.osso-RX-44.2007-49.tgz and dropbear and/or utelnetd with

You can also contact Skype and ask them to release a working package for

I installed Jalimo which is fine if you just want to run java from the
command-line (no graphics). I use it all the time to run Saxon (XSLT)
and it's slow but stable.

I asked about Java in Oct but only got answers about Jalimo and PhoneME.
Unfortunately the PhoneME distributions (including the binary pointed
to on the page Ove suggested) don't appear to contain a program called
java. There is something called bin/cvm in there but I have no idea if
this does anything useful.

It would be nice if someone could locate a java plugin for the N800
browser. Currently a lot of web sites with java features are off-limits.

There is actually a beta of Skype 2.0 for Linux available for download
from skype.com; there is clearly a plan to support video on Linux, and
it wouldn't take a great leap of imagination to see a Maemo version
following on from that. I'd rather see a good, open, interoperable,
jabber-based video client for Linux though...

I believe I read a statement by Skype somewhere that there are no plans
to bring that video support to Maemo due to not enough processing power
to handle the codec.
