That's strange. Did you reboot the device in the mean time? Also, do
you remember what channel your AP is configured to?

I've been waiting for this since the release of the N800. It's one of
the reasons I bought the device (having misread 'plans for skype +
integrated video camera' to be the same as 'plans for skype video
calling'). The Nokia N-series is undoubtedly the most convenient
video-calling platform ever made... excepting that it doesn't actually
do video calling.

If it ever actually happens, regular-joes are going to flip when they
see it in action (zomg, look at teh video phone!!!one!!111), But the
foot-dragging seems to have no end in sight.

Re: Skype video?

2008-01-16 Thread Julian Toler
I am not too worried about video with Skype (although of course it would be
nice!) - what I really miss compared with Desktop Skype is the ability to
send SMS text messages. This is a brilliant feature of Skype and saves me a
load of cash (I only have a PAYG mobile phone account so SMS messages are
comparatively expensive otherwise).
Now this is one feature which would be a no brainer to add to the N800 N810
version of Skype - no excuses about processing power etc.

And here's where it breaks down:

  sudo modprobe mtdram total_size=65536 erase_size=256

64 megs is not large enough for the OS2008 image. Anything larger
causes modprobe mtdram to fail ("allocation failed: out of vmalloc space
- use vmalloc= to increase size.")

And now Skype runs on 770 with hacker edition :-) One codec is missing
so you can't talk to some dedicated skype phones with just this codec
but otherwise it works.

I wonder whether the g729 dsp codec from N800 could be made to work on
770 too. It is not performance problem since N800 uses same DSP with
lower clock but the dsp bios is different.

it's always the same story with Skype! When I had Nokia 770, I
couldn't use Skype, they didn't a Nokia 770 version, because it hasn't
enough processing power to make voice calls, but I was able to do
voice calls with Gizmo.

Now the same situation: N800/N810 haven't enough processing power to
do video calls with Skype, while you can do them with integrated Gtalk
client or with Gizmo.

Skype: closed source, slow, consumes a lot of processing power, use
your bandwith I really don't like it!

Yes, but if a SSID is hidden, well from my point of view there is no
reason to *have* to show it in available networks list ;)

If you have an AP not broadcasting SSID, simply create a new connection
by hand. That's it.

BTW, I agree with you that a hidden SSID won't improve network security

I think support for javaME/CLDC1.1/MIDP2.0 is what we need first because there
are lot of applications out there already. I would like for example to be able
to run the javaME gmail client on my nokia N810.

Next step would be add support for javaME/CDC1.1/FP1.1 + AWT (PP1.1) + eSWT

Good point. I have seen cases where people have forgotten that AP uses
hidden SSID and our UI does not show hidden SSIDs so they just think
something is broken. In that case the user has to create the
connection manually through Connectivity Control Panel Applet.

But my recommendation is not to use hidden SSID. It does not improve
security in any way and makes more difficult to implement WLAN drivers
(scanning is more complicated etc.).

Jeffrey, I'm also interested details about your AP and it's settings.
