Re: tetex-extra package conflicts

2008-02-10 Thread Jeffrey Mark Siskind
I investigated further. It turns out that tetex-bin (which tetex-base and
tetex-extra depend on) has conflicts with:

  debconf 1.4.70.osso2
  sed 4.1.2-8
  coreutils 5.2.1-2osso1
  debianutils 2.17

Further investigation indicates that there are two root conflicts. The first is
that the standard installation includes a package fakedebconf which replaces
debconf with a script that doesn't ask any questions and always answers yes
for the defaults. fakedebconf conflcts with debconf and tetex-bin depends on
debconf. The second is that the standard installation includes a package
called busybox. Busybox is a lightweight replacement for things like sh, cp,
mv, ls, ... providing a compatible subset of the functionality with less
memory footprint. It conflicts with sed, coreutils, and debianutils.

I suspect that tetex-bin will work just fine with fakedebconf and busybox.
Is there a way to force it to ignore the conflicts and go ahead and install
anyway? Alternatively, could I replace fakedebconf with the real debconf and
busybox with the real tools? Then I would have to figure out all of the
packages that I would need to install to cover the busybox functionality. And
deinstalling fakedebconf and busybox might cause a chain reaction deinstalling
almost the whole system.

Any ideas?

Does it save in ODT now? And if so, is it possible to make it the
default format?

An AbiWord port is in private beta now and will be opened up further
soon. This should provide such support.

Just out of curiosity, is there any difference between installing
separate ssh client & server packages vs the combined package?

Take a look at:
http://tabletschool.blogspot.com/2007/10/nokia-n800-finding-and-installing-new.html
This tutorial is a bit outdated since it is pre-OS2008 but it is still
quite relevant as the steps are still the same.

They have some nice tutorials to do common tasks at Internet Tablet School.

By far, the best method of installing software is through the
Application Manager but the trick sometimes is setting up the right
combination of application catalogues. Some of the third party ones
don't play well with each other or are very OS specific. Stick with
the maemo.org ones and you won't get into too much trouble. Like
others have said OpenSSH is there in Maemo Extras and works very well
on the N800.

Editing files at device as root + xterm encoding

2008-02-10 Thread Tommy Persson

How can I edit a file as root on the device. Is there a small
texteditor available? Or can I run leafpad as root?

What I wanted to do was change the xterm enocoding frpm UTF-8 to
something that works better in combination with the systems I log in
to (I could not get åäö to work properly). What is a suitable value?
What is the allowed values?

question on airport wireless

2008-02-10 Thread Jonathan Jesse
I spend a lot of time in the airport waiting for flights due to my job and I
love the n800 to just check my work related mail, personal email, etc... A
lot of times the new Boingo wireless app that is a part of OS2008, but some
of the airports do not use Boingo in those locations i ofen have to wait
a long time to authenticate/get an ip address... however my laptop running
vista connects just fine.

any thoughts on what may be happening?

AW: Nokia N800 Restore OS 2007 after upgrading to OS 2008

2008-02-10 Thread Keitsch Krischan
Hi John,

yes, you can. But you will have to reflash the n800 again. I am not sure if
you can apply a OS 2008 backup to OS 2007.

Personaly, I think OS 2008 is stable, fast and missing apps are beeing
ported as I write. :-)
The platform matures with every new release.

Krischan

For my Nokia N800, if I flash to OS 2008, but find that some applications
that run better on OS2007 then can I
safely revert back to OS 2007?
